Twinseltown Theater - Page 58

First, here is a pic of the stuff I am talking about: http://www.unistrut.us/index.php?WP=...isplay&P=po_mf

I called my local supplier and they have the 1 5/8" stuff and the 13/16" perforated stuff in stock. Each "stick" is 10 feet long, fyi. The 1 5/8" sticks are $28.40 each and the 13/16" sticks are $20.00 each. If your bar isn't 10' wide then you could even use the extra cutoff to act as braces between the long pieces of Unistrut to provide further support and load sharing. Both of these can hold an incredible amount of weight without much load flex. In fact, they are used to support really heavy air handlers in a lot of retail environments....just look at the ceiling the next time you are in Best Buy, Home Depot, etc. - the ceilings are chocked full of the stuff!

Let us know what you decide on doing!

P.S. - Maybe you can find a home for the iron by repurposing it as decorative touches somewhere (with a little reworking). Just a thought so the material is not wasted.

TMcG, I think Tony could still trianglulate the pieces he has... and then for extra measure (I saw you signature!), use one piece of unistrut along the front edge.

Tony, if you were near by I would weld them up for you, one of the reasons I have an arc welder!

That would be a lot of custom fabrication to rework those iron pieces into any sort of structural element, particularly since Tony doesn't weld. Plus, it would still be flat iron in the final analysis which is inherently weak.

I agree with you, though, that triangulation would be best (like a sideways truss), but almost all of the easy joining hardware that Tony can use to interlock the longer pieces is built on using 90 degree angles. All he would have to do is cut to length and bolt together with no welding needed for attachment of the support system.

There are a few pieces of Unistrut joining hardware that allow for the triangulation support you speak of. But again, it doesn't involve welding only careful miter cuts for a tight fit and the bolt together. Here is an example of that fitting: http://www.unistrut.us/index.php?WP=...&S=S05&P=P6546

OK, OK.....I will give you two supports at a minimum, down from three. You at least need two long pieces of the Unistrut to make the Unistrut support framing "rectangle" if that is what Tony decides to do.

LSU will win to and become the unanimous National Champ! There would be no other way for this to unfold.

All this stress for a game that no one outside the US has the slightest idea how to play. Let me know when you are serious about your football and I can get you into Aussie Rules. Just like your game except faster, more exciting, less stoppages, no protective padding worn and lots more goals. That should open a can of worms......

Too funny, but true. However what you find out is that pretty much what Americans really could care less about is not aussie rules football but soccer. Now THAT's a game REAL Americans can ignore!

Congrats to Bama! They completely destroyed us. I'm left confused by our preparation. I didn't see any evidence of adjusting. A convincing win, Bama deserves the trophy.

Gracious in defeat Tony. Bravo!

Hi Tony. Any progress on the bar support? I hope all is well!

No progress...enjoying basketball season! LOL

Seriously, some of these new options are a bit of a curve ball to my original plans and I'm chewing on them. Between school and work, curve balls have quite the effect. Unfortunately.

Between school and work, even a slow underhand pitch can be nasty! Chin up! It'll all be worth it!

Don't fret too much. I'm envious of your space and what you've able to accomplish regardless of what you decide to do with the bar.

Thanks guys. My chin stays up! But the reality of my schedule is setting in.

Bud posted this photo of on chinadog and it was a good example of the final appearance I've got in my head. I wouldn't go quite as heavy on the wood trim, but close. The color scheme is close though. I think its the cream accents that I don't have yet that's making the biggest impact. That will come with the carpet some, and I would consider this ceiling scheme on the rear third of the room.

Anyway, its posted here for my reference.

Hey Tony,

I know all to well that life sometimes gets in the way of our best laid plans. It is just inevitability. Glad to hear that your chin stays up, now just but your shoulder down and motor forward, right?

Sometimes when I feel that I have too much on my plate and I feel overwhelmed, I just remember the answer to this age old question.

Wise man to an inquiring young man seeking wisdom.

Wise Man - My son I ask you...How do you eat an elephant?

Young man - I don't know....It is an impossible task....How DO you eat an elephant?

Wise Man - One bite at a time my son. One bite at a time.

Simple but yet elegant answer.

Good luck Tony. The photo you (and Bud) posted is an excellent goal to reach for.

You strike me as a guy who knows how to weigh his options. I'm sure you'll make good decisions and everything will turn out for the best!

BTW, I love the look of that reference photo you posted. I can see that vision clearly in your space!

Hey there Tony, when I was going through all my stuff someone said to me 'what do you do for fun?' I couldn't think of anything. With all of the things that life throws at you, it's so important for you to take some time out for something that you enjoy. It's not a bad thing to be a little selfish every now and then. It keeps a balance that you need for other areas of your life. If building the theater makes you happy, then you need to keep on with it, even if it is in bite sized pieces. Eventually that elephant will be gone, you would have put on considerable weight and you will probably never feel like eating elephant meat again! Keep your chin up mate. And remember the important things. They sit around the dinner table with you every night.

How are those curve balls going Tony? Managed to plan out what you want to do to finish the theater room? Hopefully your small hiatus will bear fruit and inspiration to finish your excellent room.
Cheers
Greg

Hey guys. I appreciate the posts. I didn't respond only out of shame for not doing anything in the room. Your friendships are valued.

RT, that's a great one. And it represents how I feel. I wake up every morning and take another bite.

Greg, I'm managing some balance, but I balance with a good movie and my family around me. That's more fun that balancing with concrete forms and carpeting.

Schools going well. I've gotten 100% on every graded assignment and test thus far! The perspective of a 42 year old man compared to that 18 year old kid I was the first time is making a difference.

Regarding school, I know for me it was a lot different the second time. It makes a huge difference learning because you want to rather than learning because you feel that's what's expected of you. Congrats on your progress so far.

I have contemplated going back to school to "broaden my horizons" and to further enhance my options as I get older and less attractive to the job market. I have a totally different attitude now than I did as an 18-19 yr old punk without any "real" responsibility.

The problem is I really STILL don't know what I want to be when I grow up!

Glad that school is going well for you Tony and that you are able to find balance, that is the true key to maintaining your sanity!

Glad to hear someone else say that - not alone! Trouble is, all the things I really want to do don't pay squat!

At this point I will recite one of my wife's favorite lines.
I could grow up, but; I CHOOSE to be immature forever (it's more fun)

I can certainly appreciate the issues with time and constant curve balls. Sounds like you've got a great outlook and are taking it in proper order and perspective. I look forward to the HT progress when it gets going again. Heck, it gives me a chance to catch up to you!

^^^^ Thanks for doing your part to keep Tony on his toes, Dingaling. I've been so busy lately investigating a potentially major global conspiracy, and am almost ready to go public with the results:

Coincidence? I don't think so.
