Twinseltown Theater - Page 14

The right blade on a "sawzall" will take care of it. If it's a structural integrity issue then these don't seem a viable option.
Tony,

I reread your post and I think I know of a way you can make it work.

It will require cutting into your riser and building a support under the joist and joining the support to the frame rather than the joist. Your joist will be resting on (screwed into place) the support. The trick is planing your cut on the surface board of the riser.

Dan, thanks for the phone call last night. It helped to talk through it.

CJ, sorry, forgot to thank you for your input too.

Got the step light issue resolved. Photos to follow soon.

Painting the false wall today.

I want to cover the yellow OC703 with linacoustic (since I have extra anyway). Will that effect the performance of the base trap any?
If you are talking about just one inch over your corner bass traps, I'm sure there will be a measurable difference but you probably won't hear an audible difference in the bass performance. If anything, it should increase the amount of bass absorption.

All I care about is that I'm not decreasing the performance of the trap on bass. Yes, 1" is all I'm talking.

Thanks again Dan!

Just finished up the paint on the screen wall. I'll have to go back and touch up a little, but its mostly done.

Seeing the progress of some of these last few steps have really motivated me to keep on movin' on.

Fear not then. Adding material only increases the amount of absorbtion. Your trap will be fine. Most of us don't have the luxury of all that extra space and from what I've read, the bigger the trap the more bass is absorbed.

Did you build a trap in all four corners of the room?

Got the steplights installed! Work out great. Even with the 25w bulbs, I have to put the dimmer down to like 10% to get the look I was after. There's a good bit of light spill around the sides of the fixture, but I think the carpet will fix that.

Oh, had the family over for another movie yesterday. This time they picked a "B" budget Christian film "Perfect Stranger". Good movie, but my total subwoofer usage for the week with them has been an eigth of a second.

I was sitting in the theater daydreaming (nothing turned on) and planning my next steps in construction when it hit me.....I can realistically wrap up this project in 6-8 months. Funny how you just keep plugging away and one day it all starts to add up to something!

I was of the mindset that the goal was unreachable, but have clearly crossed over the crest in the hill! It was a golden moment to realize it.

Ordered my GOM fabric samples yesterday. I'll need 14 yards of it to do under the chair rail. I don't think I'm going to use it on the columns. Am I overlooking another place in the room that I might need it?

I need to start pulling together all the final color choices and am just terrible at it. Is there a guru on the forum for color schemes?

Tony,

Here's a very popular AVS HT color guru, especially for ceilings:

But rumor has it most wives tend to prefer this guru:

Tony,
When it came to colors, I just asked my wife. She is the most "color conscious" person I know.

Are you going to use velvet on the screen wall? Don't ask me about colors, I'm still surprised when things I choose end up looking OK.

Dan, I'm sure your wife did a fine job at it! I'll be sure to consult her when I get some options pulled together.

CJ, I don't think I'll use velvet. I already have a bunch of black material from another project. Actually, there is very little to the front wall that's not screen. 17" strip on either side, 4-5" across the top and 18" on the bottom.

Got a call from the HVAC contractor. Looks like the install will begin this weekend!

That's great news and I'm sure you'll be happy to have that behind you! Since I did all of the construction myself, HVAC was one of the most expensive parts of my build. It slowed me to a halt for several months.

I fully expect large purchases to stop for some time. HVAC, taking the family to Disney in October....then Christmas hits. Heck, it might be next spring before I can take another chunk out of the room! But I think I'll still be able to take small bites.

In fact, this might be a good time to regroup and think through a probably construction schedule

1. soffits framed
2. equipment closets framed
3. all lighting in ceiling done (cans in the soffits, rope lights)
4. ceiling sheetrocked
5. columns built and installed
6. Double doors installed
7. Paint ceiling
8. Paint above chair rail height
9. GOM on walls
10. Sconces installed
11. Removable fabric panels on screenwall built

That's likely all the budget will allow until late spring into summer.

9. Granite bar top
10. Carpet
11. Finishing trim and moulding
12. Lighting controller (likely a spacer system / temp dimmers until then)

At this point, it will likely be next Fall

Maybe Christmas 2010 will see the first steps in electronic upgrades?
(all suggestions based on todays market)

13. Subs (A7-900? Danley dts-20? Seaton Submersive?)
14. The rest of the THX surrounds (4- ks7800 inwalls?)
15. Projector upgrade (AE3000?)
16. Amps and processor (Outlaw 7700 and 997? / B&K Reference 200.7)

Between 12 and 13 we may slide in some more construction in the game room which would include flooring, wall finishings, kitchen.

After 16 will likely be the downstairs bathroom.

Of course, any and all of this is subject to the supervisors disgretions.

Geez, it's a bit overwhelming when you start listing everything out. Maybe I shouldn't have!?!

HVAC contractor threw out a curveball. I originally asked for a thermostat with a remote sensor. I wanted the controls at the top of the stairs and the sensor in the theater. He now is saying that that thermostat is $100 more than he planned for.

My question. Did I really want the convenience of the controls upstairs? Where is the best place for the sensor? I'm thinking the theater, but this is controlling 1500sf other than the theater.

Can anyone help me think this through? How did you handle it?
I have a mini-split so can't help with the control question, but e for just a $100 more, I would just eat the cost and move on. Too many other things to worry about.

Looking through your "to do" list, you remind me just how long these build can be. I'm a bit ahead of you in some areas at this point, but a year ago my to do list looked just like yours. Just keep on going and you will soon forget all about the little issues plaguing you now. of course there will be new issues, but isn't that always the case.
Tony,

Spend the money on the better thermostat/control and you can program for the most efficient use. Then it wont matter so much where the control is. You need your sensor where you will spend the most time. In this case, I'm guessing the theater (at least until the office is completed). Since you won't be going with a zone system your HVAC contractor will simply have to be better at his job and set up the duct so that the rest of the space is about the same temp as the theater.

Granted, my space is smaller but mine works very well. If memory serves, I paid $175 for the thermostat in my theater.

I didn't make myself clear. I'm not concerned about the money, I want to have the most convenient and best performing system.

I wanted the convenience of controlling the system without having to go downstairs to do it. A typical week might mean that I don't touch the system all week (so it might be set many degrees off of ideal). On Friday night we decide we'll watch a movie so I want to adjust the temp in the basement an hour or two before we all go down. Or that was my thinking anyhow.

I do agree that the sensor should be in the theater. So the extra $100 is for the convenience of not going up and down stairs. But maybe that will turn out to be inconvenient if I want to make adjustments while in the room??? It's a toss up I suppose.

Michael, just spent some time reading through your thread. Don't know how I never did before??? Anyway, it's gonna take me some time. I did read the part where you first hooked up the Klipsch. You summed up my experience well, and I could imagine sitting in all that drywall dust with you! Thanks for the encouragement. The list does make the task seem daunting. I'll get through it though. Good news is that all the equipment upgrades will be fun, and don't have to happen on any specific timing.
Tony,

I don't know what bells and whistles your system will have but this is the thermostat I have.

http://yourhome.honeywell.com/Consum...hermostats.htm

It controls everything and is fully programmable. If I'm not mistaken, there are remote controls available for this as well.

Dan, I'm not sure of the exact unit, but I know it will be a programable digital. Although, we have programable upstairs and I'm so anal about saving a penny that I monitor the system more often that the program does.

I first started loosing control when everyone shot down my suggestions for a movie choice. Of course, I carefully planned a few options on blueray and 2.35 with lots of bangs and crashes.

It was a tough crowd, and they eventually chimed up that they had "The Boy in the Stripped Pajamas" with them. It was a triple wammy! It was only on DVD, it was only 1.85, and it used the sub for all of .35 seconds of the movie!!!

The real horror came when, for an unknown reason, I felt a need to try and explain aspect ratios, and video resolutions. I was met with blank stares and rolled eyes.

I'm in desperate need of someone to sit in my room and give me an "atta boy" pat on the back. I work so hard and all I get is a being called a crazy man.

tony123,

Probably a bit late for your visitors, but for the next time, I wonder if a high quality demo disc like swithey is planning wouldn't make a difference here? Crank up a few choice action scenes first and everybody would be on board for any movie you picked as a feature

Rev the engine with that sub, show them what you have under the hood with the lights on the Klipsch - they'll all want to go for the ride!!

By the way, your HT is looking good.
Tony, I had never heard about remote sensor thermostats like this until you mentioned it, pretty cool. I wish I had known that before, even though my thermostat is just outside my HT room (independent unit just for the basement), it would be nice to have a remote sensor in the HT to maintain temp in there while the door closed and not have to go out and mess with it.

Anyways I did a search for these types of stats and found one which is not only wireless but that can also be adjusted from the remote location. Take a look.

Thanks for the link Oman. You make a good point about having the door closed. The sensor asolutely should be in the theater. And like I said above, it's probably a toss up whether or not the control is in there or not.

The theater is down this weekend. I've got the insulation pulled out of the ceiling in all the appropriate places in preperation for the hvac!

The inside of the walls don't seem to be putting off the powdery dust. The floors, are a different story. It seems I can sweep up a dust pan full every day. We can't walk barefoot in the basement.

For the gameroom, I plan to acid stain and then seal. For the theater though, it will be covered. I was thinking of sealing the floor or maybe just lay tar paper down to help with any possible dust issues. Or maybe none of this is necessary?

tony123, you're the lucky guy whose thread pops up when I search for acid stain in the AVS forum. I'm looking to stain the floor in my theater. I just wanted to know where you got your acid staining info. The info I'm finding is very add-laden and full of ppl hawking it. Just not sure which info to trust.

tannerjr, sorry I can't really help. We've had the stain for over a year now and haven't applied it. Other projects keep jumping in line. We didn't do much research, just bought the product that Lowe's was selling.

Big announcement.....WE'VE GOT CENTRAL AIR AND HEAT OPERATIONAL IN THE BASEMENT!

It took a crew of 4 guys nearly a 12 hour day today, but it's done! It only took 15 minutes of running to make it feel more like "home".

Someone asked earlier what the unit was. It's a 3ton Carrier Heat Pump.

Very much pleased with how quiet it is. Can't even tell its running.

I'm exhausted from standing around watching, but will post photos soon.
