Twinseltown Theater - Page 23

Yeah Dingaling, I got it. LOL

Thats what I hate about emails and reading things. Sometimes when you type something it can be read completely different. I hope no one took offense especially Tony. You have an amazing setup. I was more trying to convey how crappy the store had them setup and ruined them for me which could have happened with any setup. I'm just waiting until I can hear them in a good environment. I was just contemplating why I chose Def Techs years ago and realised that it was because of a salesman and now I'm kicking myself because they really arent good for what I'm trying to achieve. I wish I would have demod more speakers and knew more back then

See Tony, I told you he was OK!
Best of luck with your speaker hunt Adam. Hijack completed!!!

Tony,

FWIW; I love my Klipsch set up (RF35 towers, with 2 SVS 20-39 tubes).

I just wish I could have seen that Danley possiblity back when I was in the planning stages ...

:-)

Hey Tony, you should check some of the different LFE setting in you receiver. I had the same kind of issues with my equipment when I first started setting it up. I have found with mine you have to set the LFE channel to an "expanded" dynamic range and then wrangle the higher frequencies back down with the FDP for it to perform "correctly". I'm not sure if your receiver has this kind of mode but I'm sure there is a similar setting in there somewhere.

Adam, sorry the big dogs got after you! No harm, I understand your intentions.

Jello, I keep thinking there must be a setting somewhere in the receiver, but I can't find it. Besides, I can play a wav file and get nice readings at the lowest frequencies. I'll be anxious to have you guys over to hear for yourselves. Maybe you'll think I'm crazy, and I may be.

Ya'll remember the company we had months ago when they broke my heart by chosing to watch "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas"? They're back. This visit, they insisted on "The Blind Side". So, these folks have been over several times and have yet to hear my sub do anything. And on top of that, my sister-in-law leans to my wife and asks her to have me "TURN IT DOWN"..........ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?!?!?! A dialogue movie with Master Volume at -12 and she wants it down. I feel castrated.

I feel your pain. The MIL just left after staying with us for three days. I couldn't begin to count how many times she asked my wife to tell me to turn it down .

I too love my Klipsch (RF62) setup! (Erik pokes Adam )

Well that just sticks. You need to organize a HT meet than you will get some people that would fully appreciate your awesome work.

Here is a solution for you more "dainty" guests:

Install that badboy right outside your door and your problems will be gone.

Mine did the exact same thing: Throw a 20 Hz test tone at it and it would make your eyeball jelly wiggle but play a movie and you would have to stick your head in the port to hear it. When I let the receiver do it self calibration thing with the mic attached is when it really got bad. What is the model of your receiver?

Ear Plugs! Why didn't I think about that!!! Great advice....seriously.

That's also great news to hear about you having the exact experience. There well may be a setting, but I've been through all the menus so many times. And I do get the low stuff pretty well through the Velodyne and the same receiver. Receiver is a Denon3300. You seem more savy at these things than I....let me know if you dig up anything.

One other question: What source are you using for your 15 Hz signal and source are you playing movies on? Are they all going through the receiver?

The source for the 15hz signal is a wav file (downloaded from the internet) using the PS3 via the network to the main PC in the house. The movies are all coming through the PS3 as well. It's connected to the receiver with an optical cable.
I just looked at the manual for theAVR3300. If you don't already have it set like this give this a try:

Front Center and Right speakers set to "Small"

Bass Output: Front & Subwoofer

If that help you can try setting the LRC speakers back to "Large" but leave the Bass Output set to "Front & Subwoofer" and see what that does.

I was going to put a sign at my entrance that required turning down hearing aids before entering. If they dont get the message from that point they shouldnt be in the room or your house. LOL. I demod my theater welcome disk for my wifes aunt and uncle and half way into it her uncle left and acted angry that I would play such a thing. It wasnt even that loud.

What does someone expect to hear when they enter a theater??? A bose lifestyle setup? LMAO

I am arranging a meet with some movie watching friends for next month and told them to bring diapers so they dont ruin my seats.

I once (and only once) watched a movie with my inlaws. We were using my living room stuff which has a powered 10" sub (not a very powerful one at that) and she kept complaing that the sound was "making her heart beat funny" and could we turn it down.

Adam, I've got some HT buddies coming over soon too. Looking forward to having some "understanding" guests as well.

Jello, firstly, thanks so much for taking the effort to troubleshoot with me. I'm concerned about the suggestion though. If I change the base setting to "Front& Subwoofer", then my understanding is that the fronts will recieve all information (even below 80hz). Mine really aren't designed for that.

I'm now wondering if Pg52 of the owners manual might be a place for me to look though. It states that the settings are independent for each surround mode. Maybe I've got compression on when in Dolby Digital or DTS. It also states that DTS mode brings the sub down -10db. I need to check all that when I get home.

Tony

Not to steel thunder from your Theater but like everyone else I want to sent kudos
regarding that subwoofer. That is one turbocharged Cinema
post #679 of 1807
I hope I dont have as much trouble with my Denon 4810 as you are having with your receiver.

How do you have the LCR size and Sub setup right now?

Next time have a demo disc handy and "accidentally" put that in instead. Have it turned up and watch the look on their face when it starts up!

Alan, thanks for the comments. The sub isn't living up to expectations at the moment, but I'm confident that the issue is not with it, rather some other variable.

Adam, maybe it's not so much "trouble" as it is my lack of knowledge.

Jello, currently set for small on all speakers (which I think is necessary) and subwoofer only.

Yes Mike, this particular crowd is just begging for me to drop them to their knees!

I think this kind of troubleshooting is better with the equipment in front of us. We can play with it this weekend.

I wish I lived closer. I would love to join. Actually my sister is in the area on vacation right now. Her fiance lived in Charleston for some years. I heard about some mine explosion you guys had in SC. Sounded crazy. That didnt have anything to do with your test tones did it? I hope no one got hurt.

That was Charleston WV, not Charleston SC.

LOL. That was nice of my wife to leave that part out of the story.

If you tried to dig a mine in Charleston SC you would get about 6 feet down and then it would start filling with seawater.
Why would someone want to mine seawater? It's right there in the ocean.

That was just a joke.

Got my replacement driver from Klipsch today. Installed and operating fine! Easy job.

Moved the Behringer subwoofer amp into the adjacent room. It was becoming quite annoying! Quiet now! There is a commonly done fan mod, but I was uncomfortable with it.

By the way, I was raised in South Louisiana and can remember digging a hole for a basketball goal. I got about 12" down and it filled with water!!! Comforting.
Tony, I did the fan mod to my B. amp and although the longest usage to date is a 5 hour music stint. It remained _completely_ cold.
