RTV 4160, no sound, no watching, no recording

This unit has been very reliable for quite sometime. It's gone through a number of HD upgrades and some crashes, but now there is a new set of problems, seemingly overnight.

For the recorded shows, it is sluggish and there is no sound. But we cannot even watch live TV. We get a quick message about not having drive space, then it goes to the default Home menu. We have over 70 hours of time available so i'm not sure what to do.

I know how to "zap" it and start anew, thanks to you guys, but has anyone been able to overcome this issue without starting fram scratch?

Thanks!

how old is it? is it using the first hard drive?

What do you mean "zap" it? Replace the HD or factory reset?

The unit is old, we've had it since '99 I think. but the HD is relatively new and is a Seagate 200MB i believe.

To me, "zap it" means reformatting the HD and writing a default image that I have. Unless of course the HD is bad, but I have no reason to believe that.

Thanks,

I'd drop a "stunt" hard drive in it for diagnostic purposes. Otherwise it's going to be relegated to the Helen Keller wing of DVR's...

Thank you all for your input and suggestions.

When I initially trouble shooted the problem, I deleted a few shows, even though it said that there was room for 79 hrs. So I deleted a few hours worth of shows, then tried it again with no change. Then I rebooted it, soft reset, and again, no change.

So I gave up for awhile and posted my message today just hoping to find a solution for it, knowing that all shows would be lost if I did not.

Then this evening I thought that I would delete a lot more shows hoping that it would make a difference. So I deleted about 20 hours worth of shows and reserved time, which put me at around 100 hrs of free space. This did not fix the problem, at least not directly, then I decided to reset the machine again, and now it works.

So it I'm almost certain that it was the combination of deleting the shows and rebooting, but who knows, maybe if I'd just tried rebooting again it would've been fixed.

Anyway, for what it's worth, that how my problem was resolved.

what do you mean 'reset the machine'? You mean factory reset?

sorry, should've clarified, I simply meant holding the power button down until it reboots. I use reset and reboot interchangably.
