DIY: Turning a non-tensioned screen into a tensioned screen

There is a HUGE price difference between a non-tensioned manual pulldown (A Da-Lite Model B or Draper Luma can be had for ~$250.) and a tensioned manual pulldown ($1500+). Has anyone purchased a non-tensioned screen and tensioned it themselves? Could I use some sort of brace or clamp to pull the sides of the screen out, thus tensioning the screen and removing/preventing wrinkles and sags?

How about 2 bungie cords on 2 bottom ends of bar with other ends hooked to dumbells or hooks on floor. Side tension is more difficult unless you want to put a thin piece of wood on back using stick-on velcro strips.
