noob question: passing video through receiver

I spend a lot of my time over on the video boards (LCD TV), so I'm not too saavy with audio equipment.

I have decided to start researching home theater equipment, and my question is about passing video through a receiver to a TV.

I have an XBox 360 (not an elite), so if I go with the component cables into a receiver with component inputs, can I then pass the video to the TV through an HDMI OUT from the receiver. Or do I have to pass the video to the TV through a component OUT since that's how it is going to the receiver?

thanks

Depends on the receiver. Here's a couple that will 'upconvert', meaning take it from component in to HDMI out.

Harman Kardon AVR247
Sony DG910
Yamaha RX-V861

And there are others.
