'Mad Men' premiere shatters ratings records
By James Hibberd, EW.com's 'Inside TV' Blog - Mar. 26, 2012

After a 17-month absence, a heavy marketing campaign and a flood of adoring publicity, TV's most critically acclaimed drama, Mad Men, returned Sunday night to record ratings.

Season 5 of the AMC drama delivered 3.5 million viewers for its two-hour premiere. That's up 21 percent from 2010′s fourth season premiere, which was the show's previous all-time high.

By comparison, the season four premiere of Mad Men delivered 2.9 million viewers, making it the most-watched season premiere of the Emmy-winning series at that time. The last season averaged about 2.4 million viewers, including DVR playback. Mad Mens first season averaged 925,000 viewers

Look at what someone found in the May 28, 1966 New York Times:

Quote:
More than 300 poor people and antipoverty workers picketed the Madison Avenue headquarters of the Office of Economic Opportunity yesterday, demanding more money for city programs, but they received only a pelting by water bombs apparently thrown by irate office workers.

Once again this show does meticulous research. They go through the newspapers published during the weeks an episode is supposed to happen and incorporate ideas from actual events.

Wow Megan can sing in french.. were simple lyrics but done very well... bit of a turnoff when she was cleaning in her underwear, looks she needs improvement in the rear department.. LOL.. but gorgeous anyway..

I'm only glad Betty wasn't in the premiere, she's becoming so forgettable and secondary now..

I was hoping to see that Dolores girl visit Pryce..

Jessica Paré is from Montréal like her character Megan.

Harry acts like he's been called to the principal's office showing no professionalism. Roger acts like his parents have left town and it's summer vacation. Bertram wanders around the halls of his business like a clueless child. Even Don acts like his office is just a place to hang out before and sometimes after lunch.

Which probably explains why Lane is focused on belt tightening. Pete is the only one trying to hold the business together. Even Lane is, quite obviously, distracted.

Nitpickers have pointed out that she speaks French with a modern French-Canadian accent instead of the old accent that a French-Canadian in the sixties would have spoken with. There was a successful movement in schools to teach them to speak with the more French accent that they (including Paré) speak with today.

These people were impressed with her saying "Calice!" when Roger screwed up the surprise party. That's a Quebec expression, I guess.

It's official. Congress has passed March 25th as Megan Appreciation Day!

Quebecers swear religously while we english speakers swear sexually.

Calise refers to a Chalise.

On second viewing, I'm amazed at how close the Draper's apartment living room is to the living room in the house I grew up in. It's sunk so the coffee tables are even with the upper area. That was cool for some reason. The paneling appears to be burl wood (ours was depressingly dark). The fireplace has no mantel and is brick painted white so you know no one ever uses it as a fireplace (the Drapers even hung a picture over it). There are the sliding glass doors out to the patio which leak air like crazy (we taped them up during the winter).

Worst of all is the horrible burlap wall paper everywhere. I guess it was supposed to look like bamboo or something. This stuff was impossible to clean. The area next to the door to the backyard had booze stains from drunken guests spilling drinks as they stumbled outside. We even had the same indestructible snake plants in a built-in planter but it was next to the fireplace. Oh, and the bookshelves with almost no books on them -- note they're mostly manila folders and loose papers. The TV set (and entertainment center) is built into the wall (nice) but you'd have to stand on a chair to get those LPs down.

By the mid-70's this was all way out of date. My parents were completely oblivious to interior design so it looked like this well into the 80's.

Most other languages swear in religious terms. English swears refer not just to sex but to, uh, other bodily functions.

I wish Don would have done what he was told and watched. That scene was too short!

Roger, as usual, had some nice one liners. Him falling the for 6am meeting was a hoot.

And I second DrLar, it would have been nice to see Dolores in person.

If this show had been on a few years earlier, we could have had a couple of nice "NYPD Blue" moments at the beginning and end of the show.

as with many episodes, I found myself saying, "man I wish this show was on HBO!"

Yup AMC does show more graphic things in other shows and too conservative on Mad Men.. at least we have some almost side boob from Megan..

AMC - No nudity but lots of gore..

I'm really looking forward to more Kiernan Shipka (Sally) time on screen, and more of her interaction with Megan. Her eyes speak tons.

I thought Megan's "I've now had enough to drink, so here we go..." French song/dance was absolutely wonderful. She had the entire room (except Don) stunned, surprised, charmed, and completely captivated, exactly like a cabaret star. Just terrific. Applause worthy, certainly from me as well... except from Mr. Draper. Great scene.

The video of that scene has gone viral and was shown on the Today Show this morning. It's on YouTube, iTunes, and supposedly is/will be available on vinyl from the Mad Men website.

June 1, 1966... also my wedding day. I caught the coincidence right away while watching the show. It was actually a Wednesday (long story) although his surprise party was on a Saturday.

Am I the only one who found the audio oppressively compressed? Even the slightest sound effects were at near peak level.
I doubt that the episode was mixed this way, so my guess is that AMC is responsible (it could be TWC in New York, but I doubt it; I think they just pass through whatever comes in). Anyway, I found it annoying and somehow exhausting. A shame because I'd been looking forward to this new season for a long, long time.

By going in May, they avoided some stuff in the early months of the year, like the 13-day transit strike that started on January 1, the day new mayor John Lindsay took office.

I don't know if I would use these terms to describe the audio for the show, but I agree that almost immediately I commented to myself that the sound was relatively and surprisingly poor.

Definitely not superb.

It's a cable TV show. 99% of the sound is dialog. Anything else is bonus.

I thought the sound at the party was hilarious. There were maybe 40 people there yet it sounded like there were 200 people there and the band had a perfect studio mix even though they were playing in an apartment.

Matthew Weiner was on the Dennis Miller Show yesterday, they replayed a bit of the song, also talked about casting John Hamm as Don Draper..

I agree that January Jones is a wooden Indian. Despite her beauty, I am always pleased and relieved when she's not around.

I don't think there's anything wooden about Christina Hendricks as Joan. I loved her scenes where she went back to the office with her baby to see if she still had her job. I particularly enjoyed Joan's scene with Lane Pryce (Jared Harris) where she tearfully tells him she is worried about being replaced. In response he relieves her mind by explaining that the two girls trying to handle the firm's books in Joan's absence are so incompetent, they couldn't handle a parking meter. Every aspect of that scene, from the writing to the direction to the acting was great television. Were it that other shows could even approach Mad Men's level of excellence.

Via Cox OKC both the video and audio of last night's episode were pristine. I thought the surround effects were particularly good.

Good to hear you are enjoying this season.

I agree with you...but still like Betty.

Joan is a force of nature...awesome.

Funny, you're right the band was "perfect" sounding and the apartment sounded way more crowded and chatty.

She was a REAL force-of-nature on FIREFLY, but her work on MM is fine as well.
