I agree with you...but still like Betty.

Joan is a force of nature...awesome.

My last post may have dealt with January Jones' performances as Betty too harshly, In the early days of the show, especially the first season, I thought she was at least adequate as a still young daddy's girl who had been cast adrift by her unfeeling and unsupportive husband. Jones did a decent job of making the poor girl look like a victim. In this connection, it's hard to overstate what a monster Don Draper is. I have no idea whether he can do a better job with his new wife, Megan, than he did with Betty. I have a little more hope for Megan because she seems to be a lot more tough minded that Betty ever was.

Christina Hendricks Joan is a wonder. I love her in every scene and thought her scene with Peggy last season in which the girls called "Bulls**t!" on each other was a television classic.

Ok...I will ask. Did anyone find it very odd that when Joan was cleaning up the baby in her bedroom that the camera did an extreme close up of the baby's rear/genitals as she put on the rash cream?

I thought it was odd and my wife and I both looked at each other and said..."OK, that was strange...why did they feel they needed that shot".

Anyone else feel this way?

Interesting article in today's NY Times regarding opening scene.

Yes, I thought so as well. Seemed totally unnecessary. Maybe it was their way of protesting that you can show a baby's "total parts" on the show but only "parts" of Megan's "parts."

I heart Megan, but I heart Hendrick even MOAR!

Wow Megan can sing in french.. were simple lyrics but done very well... bit of a turnoff when she was cleaning in her underwear, looks she needs improvement in the rear department.. LOL.. but gorgeous anyway..

I'm only glad Betty wasn't in the premiere, she's becoming so forgettable and secondary now..

I was hoping to see that Dolores girl visit Pryce..

Perfectly summed up. Yes Megan looks better in cloths, and agree her derriere is a bit flat, but loved that song the way she sang it no doubt.

Flat butts were "in fashion" at the time for women. Having any sort of functional muscle mass was considered unfeminine. This continued for many women well into the 70's.

I'm guessing Joan was way unfeminine then... LOL

Yes, it's pretty clear that Christina Hendricks was never able to manage the "flat butt" look.

I wondered if it was meant to mirror the Occupy Wall Street movement. Especially with the calls to "get a job".

In the sense that MM is very much about "what goes around comes around," and "the more things change, the more they stay the same," I'm sure it was.

Matt Weiner said in an interview that the date was 6/1/66.

I think Megan was going for the Jackie Kennedy look, or was morphing from it by then. Although Twiggy appeared at around the same time as this season, but Twiggy basically brought the "stick" look. And there is something else that applies given the "flat butt" look, but you can't talk about it here.

I don't know, that butt didn't look so flat when she was on her hands and knees cleaning up in her undies.

This is something I've noticed watching movies from the 60's and even into the late 70's. Most actresses have the flattest butts I've ever seen. They appear to be nothing more than two bones sticking out. I don't know how they were able to move their legs.

I did a little research and at the time it was simply ugly for women to display anything that appeared to be a muscle. The knee-high boots fashion was an attempt to cover women's ugly calf muscles which were unfortunately necessary for them to walk.

The last actress who displayed bone-butt was Jodie Foster in "Foxes".

Yes, this was discussed on the previous page and also ON THE SHOW.

Lol, you're right. Faye Dunaway comes to mind.

I went back to the last two episodes of last season and it didn't help other than remind me I want to stab Betty...

Amen! From a naive object of pity in Season 1, Betty has morphed into every bit the monster Don Draper has always been. Betty is a mental and emotional wreck who treats her daughter shamefully and is utterly incapable of assuming personal responsibility for hew own actions. Oh, yeah, had I mentioned that I really don't like Betty.

He was a special guest on Bill Maher's show last night. He spoke quite a bit about Mad Men and the psyche of Draper. Very interesting and the show was a good one overall. Worth checking out if you have HBO.

Jon Hamm is an exceptional director.

New energy comes to the old show..I like it.

Pete keeps being Pete...where's Joan???

Roger is on a decline...but still has the best one-liners.

Fat Betty...what a shocker...

Gotta love the Rolling Stones.

Question regarding Betty; is it real, or is it prosthetic?

It's real. January Jones was pregnant during filming.

I thought her weight looked sort of distracting, like very noticeable prosthetic/makeup around her neck and maybe even "fat" padding under her clothes.

I had read she was pregnant last year, but she just didn't look natural tonight.

Yeah it looked fake, almost convincing...but just not quite right.

I think she is trying to portray, and doing a good job, that she is uncomfortable with her weight. Until she hits that second sundae at the end. Ha!

It would be interesting to hear from more women on this site. I think today women are more open with one another and have more of a support system than they did back then. The Big "C" was kept a secret and women or probably men for that matter, didn't question their doctors to get more information. Not sure how many do now...

January Jones was on The Today Show a couple of weeks ago and she was lookin' good. Considering her baby is now six months old, I'm guessing most of the weight on last night's show was the result of make-up/fat suit. It sure was a shocker when we first saw her, though.

but werent these episodes taped last summer?
