'Mad Men' on AMC HD - Page 44

Gut check time...Mad Man goes Mad?

So did Don really do all of that? Wow.....

I though Joan's husband and Vietnam was tense..but it was the 3rd craziest part of this episode.

Sally and knife weilding grandma taking drugs....okay?

Peggy was looking crazy, I know she wanted to check her purse.

I believe the implication was that he did not, that he hallucinated it, probably due to a desire that he had done it...

Peggy was looking crazy, I know she wanted to check her purse.

The significance of that escaped me while I was watching the show. But she did have a lot of money in her purse. One would have worries about the purse no matter what relatively unknown person might be crashing in one's home. And in 1966 $400+ was a lot of money.

I thought a certain amount of sexual yearning was suggested as well. That seemed stronger to me than any suggestion of larceny.

I think it was a combination of the murderer running about, his fear of frakking things up again with Megan, and being sick.
For a while I was wondering if he had some lung issue with all the smoking but we all know mad men has a few more so that's off the table for now.

Good for Joan!

My first thought when Megan came in the room with the juice on the tray, was that she got rid of the body, and would hold it over Don's/Dick's head until one of them was dead. Which at that point would have probably been her, and soon.

Then I realized it was a bad dream due to the fever he had, which has happened to me a few times. Crazy stuff floats around up there and occasionally it comes to the surface, if given the chance.

Great episode. Glad to see Joan dump her creep of a husband; the kid is Roger's anyway. Kind of funny to see Peggy tanked up, and the way she played Roger. And if poor Sally didn't have enough problems, now she's taking Seconal and reading about Richard Speck.

The historical accuracy of this show continues to amaze me. In addition to the Speck killings, the "Chicago riots" were mentioned. I thought, "Aha!!" because I was thinking of the 1968 riots at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. But no, grasshopper, they were referring to the June, 1966 riots outlined below:

"During the first downtown Puerto Rican Parade in Chicago on June 12, 1966, the first Puerto Rican riot in the U.S. began on Division Street. The riot was a community response to the shooting of a young Puerto Rican man by Chicago Police. It was one of many urban disturbances across the nation in the 1960s. There was rioting until June 19, 1966, when community leaders rallied in the park to devise strategies to calm the crowds.

The underlying cause of the riots was the deteriorating economic conditions facing Puerto Ricans and African Americans, which embodied many aspects of the national urban crisis. Ethnic conflicts, especially those between young Puerto Ricans and Polish Americans, prevailed during the transition period."

The murderer was running around Chicago, not New York City.

Best episode so far of season 5. The season had started off slowly but this episode picked up the pace.

Mad Men is really back now.

Giving Seconal to Sally, a little tweener, both of them out cold in the morning, with Sally asleep under the couch. Was waiting for Don to look under the bed when he woke up....Very good week on Mad Men...

In the late 60s there was a riot in some major city nearly every summer. Fun times.

The "It was just a dream!" plot device was cheap for this show. If feverish Don Draper woke up actually expecting to find a body under his bed then he is having a dangerous mental breakdown.

I still can't stand that burlap wallpaper in his apartment. After five years the cigarette smoke is going to make it look filthy.

I like Roger's new Moneyclip Management style. I think it would be a big hit where I work.

Wow, great episode. I can't remember when a show had me swing from horror to laughing out loud so quickly as when Don kills the woman then shoves her under the bed with his feet. I think I knew then it must be a hallucinatory dream, but still ...

Yes, kudos to Joan. And Grandma sure is a piece of work. But, all in all, I think Peggy stole the episode. The bartering with Roger was a lot of fun, and the scene between her and Don's secretary (I forget her name) was amazing, both for what was said and what wasn't.

Great choice for the closing song. I don't think I've heard "Then He Hit Me" since it came out. Interesting tidbit -- it was produced by Phil Spector, which was always pretty ironic considering his own history of abuse toward women.

Uh, the name of the song is "Then He Kissed Me" by the Crystals, September, 1963.

Yeah but when it happened, everybody, everywhere was on edge until Speck was arrested 5-6 days later.

Two different tunes, both by The Crystals, produced by Phil Spector.

Good point. I was living in West Lafayette at the time which is uncomfortably close to Chicago with a mass murderer being on the loose even though I'm not female. However, my wife & I were there a few weeks before for our honeymoon, married June 1, 1966 (Don Draper's 40th birthday).

Yes, thanks. Now I'm confused as to which one was playing at the end.
So it was a dream, right? or are they playing us? I just couldn't believe Don will murder somebody in cold blood like that..

About the purse thingy.. did Dawn take some money or not? Peggy left her purse right there on her nose full with cash, very tempting, although Peggy could have been testing her.

Sally and grandma looked knocked out.. did they take too much of the sleeping drug? LOL

And finally I'll choose Joan over war.... I'm that easy. LOL

Dream. I think.

Well, Peggy left it there and went to bed. When she got up Dawn was gone, and Peggy just sat there and looked at it. My guess is that the money is all there, and now Peggy will be saddled with more guilt. Like she needs it.

Whatever they took, it obviously worked so well neither one knew Sally's brother was running around in diapers unsupervised.

Grandma said it was Seconal, so pretty strong stuff. Do they even make it any more?

Sally WAS only "asleep", right??

That's what I was thinking. If the grandmother is as clueless as she's made out to be, Sally could have easily got an overdose; see ya.

Yeah, I mentioned it above, what I meant to say was 'how much', not 'whatever'.

In any event, according to Wiki, it's been on and off the market over the years (since 1934 when it was introduced) but is available at this time. Wonder if they got product placement cash for the mention?

Wow so many celebrity deaths to this drug... yup pretty strong stuff..

One of the side effect is nightmares, so I think Sally will be having several soon..
I saw this as one of those "fun" episodes writers like to do. I mean, tying together Speck, Cinderella's slipper and Don's wantonness in one brief shot was just lol funny (in appreciation of the writers having a good day.)

I watched the program with closed captioning on. The lyrics clearly said "He Hit Me".

1966? It's a lot of money NOW! What's the income level of this forum? Dogfood, is your real name "Mitt"?

$400 a week = $20k per year. That's more like mid to late '70s mid class income. $400 a week in '66 was 2-3x ave income for the times, at least to my recollection.

Yes, you are certainly correct and I apologize. I had not erased the DVR of it yet so I watched the ending again just to satisfy myself. Guess I sorta "spaced it" during the credits. Sorry.
You need closed captioning? The two songs don't even sound alike. ;-)
Are people really questioning whether or not Don was dreaming?
