W3000 and XBR4/5 are pretty similar models except the 120Hz missing from the W3000.So XBR4/5 settings can be used also on W3000.The spreadsheet is creted to help with the various settings posted on XBR4/5 settings thread

In the attachment there is a picture of this tv.

SERVICE MENU
press the following sequence with less then 1 second between buttons (I.E. fast).

* [PWR OFF], [DISPLAY], [5], [VOL+], [PWR ON]

The TV will turn on in service mode and the screen will look like an old green CRT superimposed on top of the picture..

The ENTER key referred to in the directions below is the ENT key to the right of the "0" on the remote.

Screwing around in this mode is almost impossible without some reference manual, and you can really do irreversible damage to you TV if you start randomly changing values "to see what it does" .. so there I warned you, so don't come suing me if it gotten all screwy..

NAVIGATE IN SERVICE MODE

*
o [1] = Moves to Previous Menu Item
[4] = Moves to Next Menu Item
[3] = Adjusts Value Up
[6] = Adjusts Value Down
[MTS] = Toggles Stereo/Mono Audio
SAVE NEW SETTING
o [MUTE] followed by [ENTER] = stores NEW service mode settings to NVRAM
RESTORE USER SETTINGS
o [8] followed by [ENTER] = Restores All *USER* settings to factory defaults
RESET VALUES
o [0] followed by [ENTER] = Read Default service mode value from stored settings. (service mode reset)
LEAVE SERVICE MODE
o [PWR OFF] = Leave Service Mode any settings not written will be in effect until TV is unplugged or a Reset is performed.
RETURN TO DEFAULT SETTINGS:
o BEFORE storing NEW settings - unplug TV from wall, wait a few seconds, then plug back in, turn TV set on - All settings not written will have been lost.
o AFTER storing NEW settings - restore original value from list you made of original values before adjustments and store in NVRAM.

I believe that the picture posted is an XBR set. The W3000 has a black "picture frame" and no glass surround, at least according to the SonyStyle site.

I would love to hear opinions of anyone who as seen a V3000 or W3000 set side-by-side with a Samsung xx61/65 series or a Sharp 92U series set to compare black levels. My only beef with Sony sets thus far (other than the clouding issue) was that the black levels do not seem very deep.

Otherwise, seems these will be some nice sets...though possibly overpriced compared to the competition.

I just got a W Yesterday. The Screen is a little clearer then the XBR3 that I have. There are no clouds that I see. I have not had a chance to really adjust it yet. It looks good but I don't think the black level is much better than the XBR. I would say that the Samsung has better blacks, but the Sony has better clarity and less noise.

No Handshake issue on the W with the 1.3 HDMI.

Yes the 61/65 series. I did own a 4661 for a month that I returned. Good blacks but the clarity wasn't there and I didn't care for the off angle.

You see more detail on the Sony. I am not sold on the W yet I need to adjust it some more.

Thanks for the info. I'm definitely interested in this set, but for $1K more than the competition, it had better be good!

Have you tested the HDMI 1.3 to ensure there are no handshaking issues with an XBOX, etc., or are you just saying there are none so far?

I'm surprised the black levels aren't much better than the XBR2, given that the XBR2 wasn't that great to begin with. Glad to hear the picture quality is good though. How well does it handle a SD picture?

The 4661 is what I was looking at so I would definitely be interested in your comparison / opinion since you have had both.

I will do a side by side comparison tonight of the 46W and the 46XBR3 at home and check black levels.

I think the SD is pretty good, better then the 4661 I had. Thats my opinion, I know some Sammy owners feel differently but it is what I saw. I thought the sammy had too much noise in the picture. I guess if you turn the Gamma down it helps but it had more noise than the Sony in HD content too.

I see a lot more detail on the Sony then the 4661 or 4665. Peoples faces especially. On the Sony i see more detail than the Sammy.

Exactly what I saw when I had the 4661 and the 46V2500 side by side, Sony had greater detail, but not the contrast of the 4661. I'm still trying to decide on the W before my 30 day window to return the V2500 ends.

Thanks for the info. Keep it coming! Can you pls check some panning shots in BD movies or HD TV. I am very curious how this TV handles motion blur, as I am trying to decide between the V/W and the Toshiba LX177 with 120HZ.

I have seen the 4661 next to a V2500 and XBR2/3. I also agree that the detail and color accuracy was better on the Sony. My disappointment was that the Sony had black levels that were weak...more gray than black when compared side-by-side with Samsung or Sharp sets.

I was hoping that the V/W3000 series would have improved contrast and black levels compared to the prior generation. We will see when NY350 does his comparision of the XBR3 vs. the W series.

I rather have the detail. I had a 40V2500 and I definitely think the W looks better. It also looked better in the store. The W and the V2500 were side by side and the W had more contrast.

The remote is basically the same as the XBR. It is nice. It all lights up blue at night and thats all buttons not just channels and volume.

according to crave/cnet they say they confirmed with sony that the xbr4/5 do indeed have a refresh rate of 120hz. well i cant post links yet but search "8301-1_105-9726975-1" on google and it should be the first link. not sure how credible this site is.

I had an opportunity to see a 40" W3000 series yesterday. It definitely had better contrast and black levels than the prior generation XBR2 that was nearby. They weren't on the same picture feed so I couldn't directly compare detail and picture quality, but subjectively I would say the W3000 was just as sharp as the XBR2, but with better contrast.

However, at one point ESPN HD was playing a football game and the W3000 set had some serious pixelization, motion blur, etc. Hitting the "display" button on the TV brought up a dialog box that said the picture was "1080i, 16:9, cable", so I woudn't have expected it to be that bad. I'm sure there was an issue with their feed or the TV settings somehow, but the picture was pretty horrible. I messed breifly with the settings, but couldn't get a better picture.

Any feedback from an owner on how the W3000 handles a SD picture would be nice.

SD looks just as good on the W as my XBR. Not much noise in the picture at all.

The black level is better on the W but how much I don't know. It isn't a night and day difference.

The W is pretty clear but I dont think the color saturation is a s good as the XBR. There must be a way to get that better.

Another thing is the blacks and the shadow detail are best on Vivid but that iss way too bright. I can't duplicate the blacks and shadow detail on other modes.

Thank you Quyen, im well aware about it. Anyway it would be interesting to compare the degree of judder on XBR and W3000 with 24p True Cinema mode ON and OFF. Im also curios how PIP is implemented in W not sure if it has any.
I could not find any info on sizes of a box for 40W3000, pease anybody advise.

CHRISGEOFROMGREECE, please update the original post with the correct specs for the TV. You incorrectly stated that is supports 120HZ. The W series does not have this feature and this will create confusion in this thread.

CR is also wrong(borrowed from XBR). Power consumption on Sony Style for 40W3000 is 290W, but I've seen 220W as well. 40' sizes are interlaced with 52" Please clean up the mess.
