Combo disks, on which side is the actual HD DVD version of the film?

Ok, so it maybe obvious to some, but I still have not figured it out.... When you get ready to play a combo disk, it will say on one of the sides (near the center hole). " this side up for HD DVD". Fine, so you put in the disk in your player and leave the side up for hd dvd. My question is... is the HD DVD version of the film on the side that says , "This side up for HD DVD" or on the other side of the disk? I guess what I am trying to figure out, is if the laser hits the disk from the bottom or the top!! Another reason for the question is so I can protect more the HD DVD side of the disk!!

If anyone knows for sure ( no guessing please!!)

The laser will always be under the disc pointing upwards. So the side pointing towards the ground is the HD DVD side. When you use a non combo disc, the label will be on the side facing upward too.

The laser is on the bottom, hence when you put a DVD in, you put the label up.

When it says "This side up for HD DVD" that means the other side is actually the HD DVD side so that is the side you want to protect.

of the easiest way to the tell is that on a combo disk, the standard dvd side has previews while the HD-DVD side goes straight to the movie or for universal it show the HD-DVD logo thing before the main screen.

The HD DVD menu should also be a big clue as what side of the disc is being played. Plus there is always the "HD DVD" on the front of the player's display when it first recognizes the disc (assuming he's got a Toshiba player).

The "grey" looking side of the disc is the HD DVD. Since the laser is always reading from the bottom up, grey side down.

Your HD DVD player should also display "HD DVD" on the front LED when an HD DVD loads, same as it will display "DVD" if you put in a DVD.

Another way you can tell is the HD DVD side is much clearer. If you look at one side, and flip it over and look at the other, the side that is blurrier is the dvd side and the really clear side is HD DVD.
