Amazon.com basically orders stock based on demand. Likely when they originally ordered product from OPPO it was a very low number, since the pre-orders were very low. This number has likely gone up from the original order date, so I would expect a more substantial order to be going to Amazon.com in the coming weeks.

I'm very interested in this unit, however I'm worried about the load times for an external harddrive even though this player has usb 2.0. Can somebody who owns this unit tell me how long it takes for it to load up an ext harddrive (about 150-500 gigs of songs and video), and if there is a similar delay when browsing thru the fielist or switching back to dvd mode and back to usb mode?

Just another heads up for Canadians. My 980H just shipped from SolutionsAV for delivery tomorrow and onlybestrated.com also has units in stock as of this morning. There are hundreds available between the 2 sellers apparently.

Amazon offered free shipping with a free trial of Amazon Prime, so I am hoping. I wish I knew. It has not shipped yet, so I won't know until I get a tracking number. I ordered on Friday. I am hoping to get it before I get back from Tehachapi (where I am setting up a home theatre system, including my old 970HD, at the Universal Life Church) on Sept. 4th, or I will go without a DVD player until it arrives!

Yes, they offered me the same thing. I still can change that, but later I'll need to cancel that. It doesn't make much difference. Once it's shipped, it should take a couple days to receive it. I'm wondering if they have it in stock. Was your CC charged?

Thanks for the heads up! I just checked out my order, and Amazon allowed me to changed my shipping preference from Super Saver to Standard (still FREE, to my surprise!), and now the Delivery estimate is 9/20/07 to 10/1/07 - almost a week earlier! Still slow, but the shipping estimate is still the same, so if it ships sooner, then the delivery will be sooner, too! Good to know!

Oh, wait a darned minute - I checked Amazon again, and found out I didn't order with Amazon Prime after all. I guess I clicked the wrong button!

I cancelled the original order and placed a new order with free 2 DAY SHIPPING with Amazon Prime free trial, and now my shipping estimate is 9/17/07 to 9/24/07 and my delivery estimate is 9/19/07 to 9/26/07! Getting better all the time!

I will cancel Amazon Prime before the free trial ends, so I don't have to pay $79 for a year - pretty pricey for expedited shipping, when I don't order that much from Amazon.

Depending on the density of the disc, load times can take up to 2 minutes initially.

There are no real delays when browsing, but depending on the media, there can be a decoding delay when the file is first played back.

I have had good success with HDD media, but slow playback with USB thumdrives, when playing high-bandwidth media like VOB.

Can't wait for my 980H so I can compare 480p with 720p & 1080i without that ANNOYING vertical squeeze of the (returned) 970H! I was using 480p because I couldn't stand the squashed images at higher rez. USB 2.0 will be NICE, too!

If you can't wait, why are you even using Amazon? I know free shipping, and perhaps tax free? The shipping for 3 days to you is $7.95 plus CA Tax. But it would be to you a lot sooner.

Can anyone attest to the PAL>NTSC conversion quality of this machine, when compared to the Philips DVP 5982?
This ability is very important to me, and if the 5982 is poor in comparison, or if the 980HD is miles better, then i'll probably stump up for the 980HD, but if the difference would be slim, then i think i'll save my dosh and grab the 5982.
I will be using either machine in my bedroom with an SDTV right now, but i plan on getting an LCD HDTV very soon, approx 32".
Any opinions of which machine i should get in this situation?

01-0820 Firmware Release Notes:

1. Improved DVD-Audio Disc Compatibility

There are reports of some DVD-Audio discs released by Arista and Silverline not playing properly on the DV-980H with the previous firmware version. This version improves the compatibility and will play those discs properly.

2. RGB Range Selection

This firmware version adds a setup menu item "RGB Range" in the "Video Setup Page". The default setting is "Normal", which is the recommended setting and the same as the previous firmware. The new "Enhanced" setting expands the studio RGB range of 16-235 into the 0-255 range, suitable for PC display. Use the "Enhanced" setting only when you use a PC display or encounter poor black-white contrast. For normal video display (TVs and projectors), using the "Enhanced" setting will result in clipping black and white signal level and loss of details.

3. Easier Disc Memory Operation

This firmware version saves the breakpoint for disc memory when the STOP or EJECT button is pressed. The previous firmware version saves the breakpoint only when the EJECT button is pressed while the disc is playing.

I don't think Amazon will take that long to ship it. I ordered mine on Aug 4 (when they just added the item to their site and had 0 in stock) and had it in my home on Aug 14. The shipping estimates are way out there at Amazon. For example last night I ordered a couple of SACD's from them, the delivery estimate is Aug 31 - Sept 7 but I just got an email that they shipped out today. Give it a few days before you cancel your order.

To be fair, it should be added that the only reason for "one sub file per video" limitation is that Oppo's engineers haven't gotten around to fixing this - there are a mirriad cheapo MediaTek-based players with multiple .srt support so it couldn't be rocket science. I hope this will get fixed on the Oppo line of players as well.

I have a Pioneer plasma 5060. 1080i max res. I had the Oppo 971H and just got the 980H. Anyone has video optimal settings for HDMI connection.

720p will be used but wondering about contrast,brightness etc and if anyone had it calibrated and what settings you are using ?

My guess is that it is a low priority. Much like how they have not implemented more robust subtitle support for external subtitles (particularly unicode or larger viewing box).
