You should really think of the TivoHD as a $600+ box that Tivo is able to sell for $250 by charging a monthly fee. You will not be able to buy a "feeless" dual-tuner HDTV DVR [with CableCard and OTA] for less than $600 anytime soon.
Tivo sells their box at a loss and makes the money back on a monthly fee, so they do not allow you to record anything -- manual or otherwise -- without a subscription.
You can pay $300 upfront for three years of service to avoid monthly fees. If you have a Series2 with a lifetime subscription (no monthly fees), you can transfer that lifetime subscription to the TivoHD for $199.
