Thank you. So it just gives you the number, but not also a graphic "bar" that moves up and down as well? And can you call this up on screen while you're watching a program? Or can you only access it by drilling down into a menu while leaving your program?

The DVR Diagnostics screen is where you go for technical information on the signal. If you just want to optimize your antenna for various channels, then you should use the signal strength screen with the graphical indicator. That's under Settings -> Channels -> Signal Strength - Antenna.

Thank you very much for the screen shot

Another question about Tivo: Just how bad is the advertising I've heard Tivo is pushing at viewers? Ads when you press pause? Ads elsewhere in the Tivo interface? Is it really obnoxious or getting that way? Or have they stopped doing it?
No they haven't stopped it and while I'd call it annoying it's workable. The "pause" ads are easily removable by pushing the down arrow key and they won't show up for the remainder of the program when pausing again.
The Tivo Central ads are on the bottom of the list and are either one or two lines. Many people avoid these ads by not going to the Tivo Central screen. It doesn't bother me enough to care.
I guess I'm willing to put up with ads in trade for an excellent interface and overall great stability. Just watching programs one is never subjected to any ads, I'd draw the line their. I simply can't stand all the constant popup and station bugs one is subjected to watching broadcast TV, much worse than Tivo ads, if you ask me. It makes me feel like buying all my TV on DVD (except they wouldn't be in HD).

I largely agree with jjeff on this. The TiVo "ads" are not really ads. They are one line invitations to view an ad. They are so easily ignored as to largely not be worth mentioning. On the other hand, the constant pollution of network TV with its constantly displayed station logo burning into your screen; the scrolling self-promotion crap that crawls across the bottom; the zooming of the screen into a postage stamp so they can show you the latest car chase or powerball drawing -- these are all so much more objectionable to me than the TiVo "ads".

I agree that TiVo's "commercials," for lack of a better term, while irritating, are far from a deal breaker.

You can see screenshots under FAQ #60 in the first post.

You have to suspend all recordings while the signal meter is in use.

Well, I have to modify this statement now because of the new experience we had last night. We were watching live OTA TV through the TiVo last night. During a commercial break, a Charmin commercial came on and during the commercial a small box appeared in the upper right corner of the screen which said to press "thumbs up" for more information?!? This took me by surprise so I started calling to my wife to look at the screen. By the time I got her to recognize what I was talking about the Charmin commercial was over and the little box disappeared. Later on in the broadcast the Charmin commercial ran again and the box appeared once more. This time I was ready for it and pressed the "thumbs up". This stopped the broadcast display and brought up a screen with some Charmin advertising text and a choice of whether I wanted a Charmin coupon. I declined the coupon offer because we don't use Charmin, but the whole episode was not lost on my wife who wanted to know what other coupons could we get from the TiVo commercials.

This is seriously objectionable, and I'm not trying to be funny here. The last thing I want to hear is my wife telling me to not skip through the commercials so she can see what special coupons TiVo is offering. God help me if TiVo ever starts doing this with Acme commercials.

Sorry, that is funny!

I believe they've been doing those for quite some time. Most of the time I don't see the ads, though, as I skip commercials.

And, yes, I agree it is funny. Sorry Kelson.

They've also been doing it with TV shows. To click for more info on a show during a commercial or to set up a recording for it.

I don't see a problem with this, you must be watching the commercial for some reason, so to get more info or a coupon makes sense. Of course you don't have to push the Thumbs up button. And for me I usually use the 30 second skip so I don't see too many commercials.

If you are serious you can tell your wife that the coupons can be found in the Showcase area(Tivo->Music,Photos, and Showcases). There is no need to watch the commercial to take advantage of the coupon offers.

Tivo suckered me into checking Showcases a few years back by having $50 coupons for Logitech remotes. Since then, I have received the Charmin coupons as well as ordered a Texas Travel Guide.

I read that the sevice contract is tied to a specific Tivo box, but what if I have a lifetime contract and then replace my box with a series 4 when it comes out, can the service be transferred to the new box. Billing told me yes, but I would like some confimation or to see it in writing somewhere on their site.

thanks
call Tivo, they'll sometimes do it for a fee.

I'm also interested in this, as I'm about to tackle a hard drive upgrade and need it to go smoothly. I searched the FAQ.

Failing a clean shutdown mechanism, how long is "long enough" after entering standby to ensure that the machine has caught up with its background tasks, so I can pull the power plug? See bwall23's experience above.

It seems like you can transfer anything other than the lifetime subscription to another box

Thanks
no, search the thread - they've done it for people.
Generally, when a new series has been introduced, they have extended lifetime service transfer offers, typically for a fee.

You can do that as well if you use the right words

That's how it worked for me when I bought my S3. At the time, I had an S1 with lifetime and was able to transfer it to the S3 for $199, although the charge for a new lifetime subscription would have been $399. The deal included an additional 90 days of service on the old S1.

While I haven't seen the commercial thumbs up ads(I also rarely watch commercials through my Tivo) once I did click on one of the now playing ads for a new TV program. Tivo offered me to watch a preview and during the preview the green thumbs up icon flashed to push thumbs up if I wanted to set up a season pass for this program. After the brief(1 1/2 min) SD preview I was offered to view a extended preview(~4 minutes of SD). Also during the extended preview I was offered to click thumbs up to set up a season pass. It was for a new CW program called Vampire Diaries my kids were interested in.
I was rather impressed how I was able to watch ~5 1/2 minutes of video, and I'm on dial up! Even with 56k(and my old computer only gets closer to 42k) I bet it took a while to download 5+ minutes of video which for the most part I never see, since I don't usually click the ads.
D_B_0673, check out bfdtv's great OP, it has a whole area on transferring lifetime subs

Actually, the material used for those is not downloaded. Late at night, you'll probably notice your TiVo recording something calld "Teleworld Paid Programming" - this material is recorded, specially coded, and sliced up for use by the TiVo for those ads. Usually mine records it at about 2-3 AM local time.
It's recording right now, on my TiVo.
Thanks guys, I didn't realize that. All I could think was with my dial-up computer it takes a fair amount of time to download just one song(which I really don't do, but when testing). I couldn't imagine how the Tivo could download video at that speed.
I'm usually fast asleep between 2-3am so I never noticed

Question about the Remote Address, do new TiVo HD's ship with a Remote Address of "0"? I already have an S3 set to Remote Address "1", so I'm assuming I won't have any cross unit activity with the 2 remotes? I've read how to set the Remote Address, but since one unit was already changed I was hoping I wouldn't have to deal with it this time.
They ship with remote address zero but IIRC units with a zero address respond to commands from any remote address. I know for sure that a Tivo with an address other than zero responds to a remote set to address zero.
