A stereo for my apartment

Hi. I don't know if this is the right forum to ask this in, but here goes:

I live in an apartment and need something to play my cds. A bookshelf system would be nice, but I haven't found one that suits my taste. It has to be on the smaller side (although a separate amp/receiver + 2 smaller speakers is not out of the question). I tried an Onkyo HTIB system a few years ago and found it lacking in mids. I really want something with crisp highs, nice mids, and deep lows. I'm not interested in thumping/pounding bass response (neither are my downstairs neighbors.

Budget???...less than $500 would be nice. Much less than $500 would be especially nice However, sound is important to me and I'm picky about how my music sounds. I don't need this system for DVDs. An input for an MP3 player would be nice and a headphone jack. Maybe an EQ to fine tune the sound? Can't think of anything else. Anyone?

The cheapest way I think a fella could have himself nice sound, though limited in volume, would be with a Sonic Impact T-amp and a pair of KRK ST-6 speakers.

The SI is about $30 at Parts Express and the KRKs are $200 a pair at Guitar Center, Musicians Friend and scads of online prosound places.

I've used the setup myself, ain't half bad. No siree bob, not half bad at all.

Aperion Audio 532LR $180

NAD C320BEE $300 MSRP - can be had for less

That's a good match and within your budget considering that you'll have a source. I.E. your MP3 player or CD player. YOu can simply connect your MP3 player through a analog stereo cable. Hopefully you'll have a bookshelf to put these on - while not ideal - will save you a hundred bucks on stands. This match is certainly worth a try, and if you don't like it - return the Aperions with their guarantee.

Look at the following:
Onkyo TX-8222 - somewhere around $150 -160

Klipsch RB-51 - $350

Because of the size of the speakers you want, don't expect a lot of bass. Towers would offer a better bottom-end. If you go with the bookshelf's, you might want to add a small sub later.
