bluray thru component

i plan on buying a ps3 this weekend and unfortunately in my current configuration i dont have an available hdmi input.

how good does bluray look thru component on the ps3?

current tv is pio 6070, so native is 720p anyways. i have a 360 running thru component and it looks incredible. both games and d/l'd hd content.

thanks for your help on this issue.

Edit - Didn't know if you meant not available because it was being used or not available because there isn't one.

lmao, that doesn't answer my question. i know there are hdmi switchers out there. not ready to drop money on one though. in a few months ill be getting a reciever.

IMHO - HDMI looks alot better.
I've run both and HDMI is probably better but it's not heads and shoulders better at 720p
post #6 of 22
Agreed, alot better was maybe an overstatement. I thought component looked darker than HDMI.
It looks just fine to me. I'm viewing on a 50-inch 3LCD at 720p.

It will still look good. The swithc from component to hdmi wasnt that drastic IMO.

I am pretty sure that the ps3 would not upscale commercial DVD's through component but it does under HDMI. I do not understand the reasoning for this though.

thats true. i don't know the reasoning, but you can only upscale standard dvd's over hdmi. i don't want the ps3 to upscale dvd's though, just play blu-ray.

thanks fellas.

Macrovision Analog copyright protection..thats why DVD's arent upscaled via Component. Also it depends on your TV, some do great with HD via component, others dont. At 720 I cant tell a difference between HDMI and Component on my set. Seeing as how you have your 360 hooked up and it looks great you should be just fine.

To elaborate on that, the DVD licensing agreement forbids output of upscaled DVD media bearing the CSS encryption over anything other than an HDCP encrypted ouput (DVI or HDMI).

So for the Sony to be allowed to play DVDs at all, they agreed to this condition in the licensing agreement. No DVD player does this over component (anymore, a few models did but were fixed or"squashed"). A couple still output it over digital, but "forget" to apply the HDCP.

Which ends up being ludicrous as you can presently get BD and HDDVD upscaled over component, and those are far higher resolution sources to begin with. But I am sure as the studios' full catalogs get released, they will begin enforcing the ICT on those as well.

Not true. You can also upscale over VGA. And that makes the choice of not allowing upscaling over component a very strange one.
I've had the PS3 hooked up both ways over extended periods of time on a Sony 720p LCD RP. You would be hard pressed to tell any difference at all on a Blu-Ray Movie.
The DVD upscaling is the feature that made me go out and buy an HDMI switch.
If it wasn't for that I'd still be hooked up component.

I remember when Samsung, I believe is was Samsung, had the upscaling over component DVD player that quicikly started shipping with a new F/W to prevent the upscaling.

Users here had to send in their DVD players to certain service center to have the upscaling f/W put back on to the players.

Yes you can send upscaled over VGA, or even over DVI from a PC, however, what I said is true. Go read the CSS licensing agreement. That exact verbage is in there, and in order to be a licensed mfr of DVD decks, you are supposed to abide by it.

So do you get all this fancy upconverting business if you use an HDMI --> DVI cable (to a HDCP DVI port) or must both inputs be HDMI?

As long as HDCP is supported you can get upscaling

Excellent. I just bought a PS3 and I have a DVI port on the back of my SONY TV which so far has been useless. I wanted to see the difference between component video and HDMI (i.e. digital video) so I bought a low priced cable. From what I've read it seems people think that if you can support an HDMI connection in your set up you should do it. I'll post my results after full analysis...and after I have actually opened the PS3.

I just bought an OPPO DV-970HD and with a firmware upgrade, I was able to make it upscale to 720p/1080i over components.
