5 Kubrick Films Coming to Blu-ray and HD-DVD October 23 with TrueHD!

Better yet, it appears both versions of all the films will include Dolby TrueHD 5.1 lossless audio, and the Blu-ray versions will be pressed on BD-50 discs. Thank you, Warner!

We're still waiting to receive full disc specs and high resolution cover art, and will update each disc's detail page as soon as we have them.

And yes, I know it's for both formats. If any HD DVD people feel the need to complain, just keep it to yourselves and copy/paste.

doesnt matter if warner is pressing to 50GB discs if they aren't doing a separate encode to use the extra space. if they don't they'll only at max go over a single layer disc by 5 discs.

Aren't Kubrick movies all filmed in a 4:3 aspect? Why would anyone buy a 1080p movie with black pillars on the sides???? Unless of course its out of print on DVD...

Otherwise, I'd rather stick with the special collector's edition of these movies on DVD.

They're filmed for either aspect, although almost all DVDs have been cropped to either 1.66 or 1.77.

The Adventures of Robin Hood, HD DVD. But yeah, Warner will probably crop them.

This is GREAT news, looking forward to Clockwork Orange, 2001 and The Shinning. Good they will be on 50GB discs but I hope that means they will actual be a different encode, it would suck for these to be 29GB encodes that simply would not fit on BD-25

You are kidding, right? I am all over these regardless of the aspect ratio.

Kubrick had total control over the aspect ratios (ratio of the width of a film image to its height) of his films, in their theatrical release and on home video. However, Kubrick preferred on all these films that they be transferred to home video fullscreen (a ratio of about 1.37 : 1). Had he remained alive to see the rising popularity of widescreen and high-definition TVs, he may have eventually changed his mind about these films.

The INHD version of Clockwork looked very good and was 16:9, hopefully the BD will retain this apsect ratio. I would hate it if somehow Clockwork ended up being 4:3 or something like that.

as long as it is "original" aspect ratio, i dont care if it's 4:3 or 16:9, what matters is how the film was originally shot in. but if both versions were made i'd def prefer widescreen.

The Fifth Element remaster was offered to be and has been replaced for free for previous buyers, so unless Warner does that with FMJ, it is indeed the first double-dip.

I hate sound like a Blaphemer, but the best thing to happen to Kubrick fans that are home theater enthusiasts is his passing.
He probably would never approve anything but 4x3 cuts and mono soundtracks.

I think for US buyers only But it doesnt matter. So Warner gets the trophy for the first Blu-Ray double dip

What the hell difference does aspect ratio make to whether someone buys an 1080p movie or not?

Casablanca is 4:3 with black bars on the sides. Forbidden Planet is 2.35:1 with black bars on the top. None of that really impacts the HD presentation -- they're both fantastic.

Yea I can agree the 5.1 remaster of Clockwork orange would have never come out while he was still alive, I was not happy having to deal with a mono version of this movie for so long given the excellent soundtrack involved.

The set is one of the jewels of my SD collection.
