Newer houses will usually have a supplied ground coming out of the house for telephone and cable. It would just be a thick bare copper wire. If that isn't there the second best option would be the power riser provided it's metal. If not then maybe use cold water but there other conditions that need to be met for cold water to be a valid ground. Also, make sure to use at least 12 ga wire for your ground.

It is a newer house. Built in 2000. It does have the solid wire for the ground, but it doesn't look copper unless they have sunk the copper under the ground and just have the wire coming up for the electric/cable/phone.

I still don't understand how it could change like that literally overnight without changing anything at all in my system.

Didn't read the whole thread but robert could you answer a few questions?

How are the 5050s working for you? What load are you giving them?

Also how loud is the fan? Particularly when at low volumes, is it audible?

And could you tell me how much heat it is generating, as in is it heating up the room significantly?

Can't answer your questions because I do not have the 5050's. I am running crown ITech 8000's. Totally different animals. They really have a ton of power and can draw a ton of power no matter how you slice it. They really stay cool, but can be as loud as a jet engine when they get fired up-no kidding! I need to get the current firmware update to fix the fan situation-according to crown.

Any help?

The Itechs are great amps but a large bit out of my price range. Curiously do you get roll off below 20Hz from the crown? I keep hearing thats what crowns do.

QSC amps are powering all the mains and surrounds

Well still shoot me your address in PM or email and I'll still send out the bass dvd. I've got one thrown together, but I'm wanting to take a few light scenes out of it. I ended up getting next week off anyway so I'll probably get it done during some time when the kids are in school. It's good to have a bass demo dvd laying around just for bass craving moments. Maybe something can be thrown together early next year.

In the case of 2 LFE cabs, has anyone seen better results when placing them in the back of the room?

I am trying to get a bit of help to move at least one cab and do a little testing. I want to see how the graphs change and the overall effect on the system when I move the cabs. I should have went with the wheels!!!!!

I have my sub behind my couch and have had it on the back wall of my room. When I had my smaller sub I had it up front and if I could fit my current sub up front and still get the shaking feeling I get now I would have it up front. Seems to integrate with the main speakers better that way.

It's kind of a logistics nightmare. Because they are extremely heavy and can tip over and hurt someone, being very careful is a priority. It is like moving a coke machine. I have a few friends coming for a Holloween party in the next 2 weeks, so that is the time- Oct. 24th.

I am hoping to get some interest in a GTG going, but nobody seems to be able to make the trip. Maybe if Mardi Gras was part of the trip, they might make the trip down here. We will see. I have to get some input. It sure would be nice to have a couple of people with quality measuring gear and knowledge of REW, and such, to do some real world measures. I would love to do some A/B comparisons with my cabinets. No takers as of yet. If I could just move them and bring them with me, I would go to the testers, but that is not possible with my cabs. Hope I get some interest in attending for the new date.

WOW... I just read through this thread from the start - what a journey! RC, I think you need to film a documentary on this build process and sell it to all the DIY freaks on this board! Make sure it includes some good low frequency information in the audio portion, too.

Congratulations on a fantastic build and a GREAT looking set of subs! Wishing you success in getting them integrated with the rest of your system so you and others can enjoy the fruits of your considerable labor.

Longer sweeps provide higher signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) in the measurements, each doubling of the sweep length improves S/N by almost 3dB. However, the time required to perform the processing after each sweep will more than double for each doubling of sweep length. If REW is running on a computer which does not have a fast processor and a lot of memory, measurements will be much faster using the shortest sweep length (128k samples), at a small S/N penalty of about 3dB compared to the default. 1GB of RAM and a fast processor are recommended if using the 1M sweep, invalid measurements may occur on computers which have insufficient RAM or processor speed


I might need a faster computer and more RAM.

I've been to Baton Rouge 5 times in the last 3 weeks searching wrecking yards. Pull a Part and Brown's. I am trying to get a GTG together. I am in no hurry, but it would be nice to get a few guys together to chew the fat about subs and LFE. Keep in touch and we can work something out. Do you have any subs that can be tested?

Weekends would be good because of the season. It is starting to slow down for me and I will be home more weekends. I have had my share of car trouble in the last 2 months, so just catching up with that has slowed progress to a trickle. Even though, I am game for some demo. Do you have any setup skills for 5.1 or 7.1?
