The "Official" Denon 4308ci Owners Thread - Page 50

I've just completed the 'initial' installation of my new 4308ci. I've been reading through the pages of posts here, and I see there are few things I still need to do (i.e. firmware updates, re-read the owners manual for about the 15th time, etc.)

One question I have that I'm too lazy to search through 49 or so pages of this forum to see if its already been addressed is:

Is there any way to view a file of jpegs located on a pc (server) while I listen to music? This would be doing two things at the same time through the receiver.

When I read the manual, it seems I can only do one thing at a time when using the network and/or usb port.

My current solution is to simply purchase an adaptor that will convert the rs232 output on my laptop to an HD format when I finally purchase one of those 1080p things. In the meantime, I have the s-vidoe pc output going to a TV which is marginally ok.

My appoligies if this has already been covered. And, thanks in advance for your help.

just got mine too.. wifi isn't working....

updated firmware on the 4308, via cat5... updated firmware on router (netgear 614v5) disabled upnp, disabled firewalls.... turned off ALL security.. tried both ad-hoc & infistructure. tried hard resets on ALL hardware, tried manual config... called denon... the kid on the phone told me my router was the problem.... bought a new router (Dlink gold) same issue.

Wired works great. wireless shows connection (ad hoc) but never gets an ip address, and the router confirms no connection exists. of course online features only work when wired....

I'm not happy. I've been working on this for three days & spent $100 on a router I don't need....

any suggestions???
ray, this mey not help or be what you want, but if you can go wired or bring back the router and get one that DOES work, is the most popular and common and has great support. Linksys WRT 54G.
I have optoma H79 (720p) projector. My over the air ant and sat both output 1080i . Playstation 3 and xbox 1080p. On line manual says 4308ci will not convert 1080i to 720p. What are you guys doing for this? I would like to leave it set at 720p output. PS3 and Xbox 360 look best on my projetor down converted from 1080p. Or do I switch scaler on and off for different sources. I dont know why Denon did not make the 4308ci to be able to scale 1080i to 720p. There is still a lot of pepole using 720p prjectors.

I allready tried a new router... I frankly hate linksys, they have been prioblematic for me in the past... but I might try it anyhow.... after all, I need to take the D-klink back.,.,

going wired is not an option.. I rent

I paid 1000 extra bucks for this, and HD radio.. it had outta work...
I don't know if it's just because I'm living right, but my receiver logged onto the network with no issues when I followed the instructions in the manual. I'm using a D-Link router that is listed as "unsecured" when I search for it on my PC. I don't know if this makes any difference at all. Also, DHCP Server is Enabled; PPPoE is Connected; SSID is set to default; Channel shows 6 (I think this is a default); and WEP is Disabled. I checked this using 192.168.0.1 in the address field of my browser, and then typing 'admin' for the log on with no password. BTW, I really like the D Link. My friend has a Linksys and it seems to be problematic. I've listened to about 5 hours of internet radio with no problems, and am currently downloading the Denon firmware updates. The router is connected to DSL.

Well., I'm beginning to wonder of it's my reciever.. My Xbox, and Wii connect flawlessly.. 2 laptops in the house, also have no problems... I moved the router closer to the reciever.. until I had 90% signal.. still no IP aquisition.

ALL security is off, and I've tried tons of different settings... worse yet.. I can't find anyone with similar trouble..

Damaged reciever?.
To connect to your router, you might try the 'manual' setup as shown on pg 33 of the owner's manual. Essentially, you are assigning the IP address yourself. The IP address for my D Link router is '192.168.0.1'. When the receiver acquired its address automatically, it set itself to '192.168.000.100'. The WAN information (subnet mask, default gateway, etc.) is available by accessing the router and looking at its 'status'. Try entering a 'manual' IP address that's appropriate for your router (the one the Denon assigned is appropriate for a D Link router) and then the rest of the settings from the WAN information that's stored in the router itself. The 'secondary DNS' address is usually optional, so hopefully you don't need it if it isn't there.

I've seen other postings where this has worked. I'm not an expert at this. I've just learned by doing over the years. I wish this technology was simple and would just plain work.

I remember reading earlier that the wireless network name needs to be all CAPS with no spaces.

I am having the same issue as Rayholio. I also have a linksys and can't seem to get it to work. Was able to update wired by running 50ft of cat5 down the halway and downstairs to the Denon. Wirelessly, I can't seem to get on. I'll try changing the network name to all caps and see. They should fix this in a future firmware update or list it in the manual, would probably save on a lot of support calls.
I am a new 4308 owner and have been following the thread for a while, but can't seem to find the answer to these questions, and they may be useful for the other new owners as well.

1) Audissey seems to cause the unit to lose bass, specifically if looking at the curves in the 100hz/below region the 2 times I have done it. Is it better to set the speakers to "small" BEFORE running audissey, or doesn't it make a difference? (I manually tweaked this out of the curves after noticing an improvement when turning Audissey off for the LR channels). I have DefTechs, all with 6.5" woofers, so they are not "small".
2) Do you have to have your network be in all caps and without spaces to connect wirelessly? A lot of people have been having trouble with wireless and are trying different routers. Anyone using lower case and spaces?
3) Does it hurt the receiver or sound quality to add 10db to the input volume across the board? I was finding a relatively quiet sound coming out even when turning it up to reference levels (at least compared to my old Yamaha). All inputs used are either HDMI or coax/optical digital.
4) Since you have to have 2 antennas for FM, one for regular and another for HD radio, can 1 antenna hooked to a 75 ohm splitter do the same thing? I haven't been able to use HD radio because without the powered antenna I use for regular FM, all I get is a local public radio station, and I know my market has about 5 or 6 main stations with HD transmissions as well.
5) I am hooking the Denon to a Toshiba 50hdx82, which is a 5 yr old CRT with DVI input. Do I need to switch to the RGB colorspace or enhanced black level setting? Will having this setting coming out of my Toshiba A2 HD-DVD player affecti it as well?

Thanks in advance,
Rich Tisovec

I have similar problem.
AVR4308CI recognized WiFi but unable to connect it.
My PS3 and Wii has no problem to recognize and connect.
I did upgraded FW for PS3 last night but Denon can't.

My router is MAC, Airport Extreme and linked G5, G4 Laptop and Vista machine.

Do I have to wired with Vista machine to down load?
I would very much appreciate if someone can tell what to do.

1) Audissey seems to cause the unit to lose bass:

Hi Rich,

I had a lot of Audyssey questions as well. Fortunately, there is a forum here:
http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=490969
dedicated to it. The one thing I did learn, was an Audyssey engineer recommended the setting to 'Audyssey Byp. L/R' or 'Flat' for music, and 'Audyssey' for movies. These can be found under 'Audio', 'Parameter', 'Audio', 'Room EQ', and then select the different Audysseys. Simple, right? Try those and see if your bass comes back, especially for CDs.

The rest of your questions are beyond my minor expertise.

Here is a quote from the Founder of Audyssey taken from another forum:

Hi everyone,

I thought I could jump in and offer some explanations about Audyssey MultEQ and the crossover issue that is being discussed here.

First, some background. The Large and Small differentiation can be attributed on Audyssey's co-founder and Chief Science Office, Tomlinson Holman. When he started the THX program many years ago he proposed the use of these terms to describe whether a speaker should be bass managed or not. When discussing speakers designed to the THX spec that meant that if a speaker has a -3 dB cutoff point of 80 Hz or above it should be called Small and if it can go below 80 Hz it should be called Large.

This terminology is now widely used by manufacturers even if the speakers are not THX. This is the case in the Onkyo receiver. Onkyo specified that the decision for Large or Small will be based on 80 Hz. So, when Audyssey MultEQ runs it measures each speaker's response and reports the -3 dB point to the Onkyo bass management system.

The problem is that when a speaker has a -3 dB point of, say, 79 Hz, MultEQ will call it "Large" to follow the rules. The Onkyo bass management system then sets it to Large and bass below 79 Hz is not sent to the sub because it is assumed that the speaker will handle it.

We are working hard to convince manufacturers to change their thinking about the default settings of their bass management. Some have already done so and have lowered the criterion to 40 Hz.

The 705 doesn't do that automatically, so the simple solution is to manually set the speakers to Small after the calibration is finished. When you do that, the crossover values that were found by MultEQ will be applied to all speakers and the bass will be properly redirected to the subwoofer. This manual step is a small inconvenience, but it doesn't have any negative effect on the performance of the room correction filters produced by MultEQ.

I hope this helps clear up things. Please let me know if I can answer any other questions about Audyssey.

Best regards,

Chris Kyriakakis

ok.. Never got my wifi workling.. I will try the all caps thing.. but I doubt that will help... When I took my new router back, I couldn't bring myself to buy another one.. if two didn't work. three won't either... instead I purchased a wireless gaming bridge.,

It allows me to hook up to the RJ45 on the 4308ci, and then connects wirelessly through its own reciever. Works great, Although I'm pissed that I am forced to do this after 20+ hours of failures, incuding a call to denon.

SHAME ON YOU DENON. This reciever was over priced to begin with.. (based on the 3808ci) and there's no reason for a reviever in this class to :
#1. be so hard to get worklng
#2 have such lousy support, and documentation
#3 come with such CHEAP remote(s)
#4 Where's the Reon?

ok... It sure SOUNDS awesome.. which is why I got rid of my integra.. but I should have purchased the next model down for a thousond bucks less.

I'll LYK if I fix the wifi...

OK after 4 years with my 4802R I decided to upgrade. Never really gave much thought to anything other than Denon. I love their build quality and sound fidelity. Yeah the Onkyo 905 is tempting, but I love my Denons. I went to Best Buy today to see what they can do. Told the sales perosn they had it 2 weeks agon on their web site for $2250 and he honored it, also this weekend they were running 3 years free financing, making the decision that much easier. Only down side is it is not sticked in store and I need to wait 5 days to get it, but I am sure it will be well worth it!

Can anyone tell me what 'Ext. In' is for and what it does? I need a 'Denon 4308CI for Dummies' book. I love it when the manual simply says, "Here's where you turn this on or off." without saying what it does.

My GF came over to hear my system for the first time. She says it has meat.
This definitely worked for my system:

Airport Extreme with the aiport network name that has no spaces AND is all capitals. Password that has no spaces AND has all capitals. Airport network was set to have the kind of password mechanism that is compatible with both PC and Mac with the same password text (WPA?)

This on Mac OS 10.4.9 or 10.5.

I also was able to connect on a separate occasion with ethernet cable to the same machines: that's how I did the original download of firmware. I had already logged in to the radiodenon via web browser, do not know whether that made any difference.

If it is like my 4802R it is the analog inputs. Bascially you feed in a source that the Denon will just amplify. Typically this is for SACD or some high bit audio that is not allowed out through the optical/coax bitstream. On the newer HD-DVD and Blu-Ray players some will have seperate audio outs so that the player can decode DD+ or DTS-MA and your receiver just amplifies it.

I purchased the 4308CI to replace my Lexicon DC-2 which had stopped working a couple weeks ago.

My inputs are all component and optical. Output is component to a Pioneer Elite RPTV. Currently I run an HD TW cable box, XB360, and PS3 as inputs.

1st question. Since the Lexicon A512 was still working I thought I'd just use the pre-amp from the 4308. Unfortunately there was a hum from all speakers that I couldn't get rid of. The Geek Squad guys that had delivered the receiver couldn't figure it out either. They thought the output of the 4308 was too powerful for the Lexicon. Could this be true? Can it be controlled?

I ended up having them run the speakers into the Denon as I wanted it to work. when they left. How does the Denon amp compare to the Lexicon? Should I try to get the Lexicon working?

2nd issue. Periodically when the boys are playing the 360 or PS3 the volume starts going up or down. I tried watching the IR repeater and didn't see it showing anything. This happens a couple times an hour when they are playing. Any idea what might be causing this? They've got yelled at a couple times by their mommy when it went up to about 0 from -30.

3rd question. I've got an amplified FM antenna in the roof and was wondering if I could split that to the 2 FM inputs? Although, if that's possible I really have to wonder why they wouldn't just have one input and split it internally.

4th issue. I updated the firmware last night, then tried to run the MultXT room setup. It goes through the sounds on all 5 speakers, then stops and puts you back on the start button. No errors or messages are displayed. How do I get it to continue?

Thanks in advance,
JonnyG

Hi bwclark & hkokko,

I called Denon this morning and found out THERE IS NO FW update.
I guess, I was mixed up with other equipment,,,,,,,

Anyway, Denon Tech service is The WORST I ever encounter!!!!!!???????
I waited more than 44 minutes this morning.

Put a side this ill feeling, I was playing around again network set up.
An about 35 or 40 minutes, GUI screen showed "ON".

I did change a couple of parameter, such as Mode to "Ad-hoc" and Proxy to "OFF"
I checked few times after that and it said "ON" every time I checked.

My set up is :
Mac G5 & G4 Laptop with Airport Extreme with Airport Express next to Denon AVR4308CI. (WIRELESS)

Over the weekend, I did try wired and wireless but no success but,
What a good feeling.

My HT set up are :
1st Set - AVR4308CI (will be replace by AVR5308CI), Sony KDS-R60XBR1 (will be replace by Elite Pro-150FD), Toshiba HD-A35, Sony PS3, Denon DVD-2900 (SACD/DVD Audio), Monster AVS2000 & HTPS 7000, Klipsch Reference Series 7 with Velodyne SF12VBR10, Comcast HD DVR.

2nd Set - AVR5803 (will be replace by AVR4308CI), Sony KE-50XBR900 (Sony's last Plasma model), Toshiba HD-XA1, Samsung BDP-1000, Denon DVD3800 (DVD Audio), JVC HM--DH30000U (D-VHS), Samsung SIR-T165 (ATSC Tuner), Wii, Comcast HD Receiver, Monster AVS2000 & HTPS 7000.
Bose Acoustimass 16 (Center Speaker replaced with VCS-10)

So far, so good!
To simplify some stuff (I am no expert on this but I have managed to have my setup work): Can you try to take out the Airport Express out of the equation.

I had a similar setup and made sure that my PS 3 and the Denon would connect to Airport Extreme. Also made sure that I can connect to internet via that Airport Extreme from my Mac.

What is your airport security scheme (WPA Personal, WEP or some other?). This is visible on your airport basestation configuration. I was using WPA Personal. If you are using WEP there might be trouble as for this kind of security scheme the PCs would have to use the password equivalent in hex for Aiport networks if I have understood correctly. So for simplicity sake you might want to use WPA Personal.

The name of the airport network might have to be in capitals and at least the airport network password HAS to be in capitals.

Have you logged on to radiodenon.com with your denon device id from your Mac?

Hopefully this helps a bit...

My first post here after lurkin' a bit.

I'm considering the 4308 to fix something in my system. Currently I have the following:

Denon 3805
PS3
Sony 70" SXRD
Buffalo DNLA NAS server (music/photos)
Wired & Wireless networks
Whole house audio (speakers in ceiling throughout house)

Problem: 3805 can only send analog sources to zone 2
PS3 can't send audio to optical AND AV analog at the same time

I used to have my Pioneer 94HD bluray player doing this and it worked great (except the GUI on the pioneer is clunky and lame) but I moved that player to the bedroom and the PS3 to the living room. Why, you may ask? PS3 fan noise is muffled in cabinet and therefore is tolerable.

So I'm thinking, by using a 4308 I can fix it by 1 of 2 ways:

1) Access the DLNA server direct to the 4308
BUT, will the Denon send this audio (wired ethernet) to zone 2?

2) Use the PS3 to get to the server and then send to the 4308
BUT, will the Denon send HDMI audio to zone 2?

This stuff drives me crazy. any help would be appreciated.

I got my 4308 on Friday last and I still cant the firmware update to work.

I tried both wired and wireless connection through my Netgear router and still nothing. I am fed up right now.

Actually I think that info from the manual answers both my questions.
Thanks!

HDMI to zone 2- NO
Network server audio to zone 2 - YES

With that figured out. My question is if the 4308 will work with a Buffalo Linkstation DLNA NAS server. The Denon manual mentions DLNA in passing with a bunch of other requirements. I'm assuming with plain old DLNA it will work. That's the whole point of DLNA!
