Hi FilmMixer,

Thank you "again"!!!!!!!

Now it works like a charm. I've got the wireless functions all working and the 4308 hooked up to my Dell as a media server.

Next project is to get the photo's to stream faster. The Denon gets into the directories but seems to prompt me for each picture Vs. playing a slide show.

Thank you again for your help. Perhaps there is something I do that can help you one day. tvstaff.com

Best regards, Tony

I've never used the wireless myself (I have wireless but, I only use it for my Wii, since my router is behind my TV, I hardwired my Denon and PS3 to maximize bandwidth for streaming files off my PC) but I thought I've read people in the forums saying that the Denon prefers SSID's be in all caps. I don't know if that is the problem or not, but I thought I read it worked for some others having issues.

In my case, I am using both an Airport Extreme for wireless and an Airport Express for wired...

My ssid is HomeOffice, and the Denon had no issues with it what so ever...

I had read here about the Apple stuff not working at all, but I set them up using the Apple provided docs, and the first time I fired up the 4308, and ran the network setup it was ready to go.. I even upgraded firmware with the Airport Express feeding Ethernet to the unit, and no issues there..

YMMV..

Anyone have any success figuring out the remote codes for an H20 Direct TV receiver? I tried all of the codes listed for Direct TV satellite receivers and none worked.

The other issue I have is getting the audio of the current playing source out either of the optical digital output ports. I have a set of wireless headphones that have an optical input. Can anyone tell me how to switch these ports on to play the current source?

Hello
Fellow Denon Maniacs
I was very happy to see this thread

I have an AVR 5803 now-old news no HDMI etc but ok
wanna buy it?

Anyway, I am looking to upgrade to
Either the 5308ci OR
the 4308ci

I will later get the DVD-3800BDCI

My question is:

What is the difference between the two
besides 2 plus thousand dollars
in laymans terms.
10 watts for sure
Audyssey MultEQ Pro calibration installer ready ???
Audyssey MultEQ XT Auto-Setup/Room EQ ???

BTW,
I have chosen this set up over the krell, bryston whatever pre-pros
as it has maximum connectivity and great specs. I wont even be using the amp section as
I have a 300 x 5 amp.

Please help.
Also if you can PM me good online sources to buy etc.
Thanks so much

You have posted this question on at least two boards; perhaps three? Both units are Audyssey Pro Eq ready. They have different video chips, Faroudja in the 4308, Realta in the 5308.

Another satisfied owner here. After many months waiting for the AVR-5308 I finally broke down and took the plunge and picked up the AVR-4308CI. As I bought it just before Christmas I didn't have a lot of time to play but I spent the last couple of days doing some comparisons to the audio from my previous Denon, the AVR-5800.

So far I have been pleasantly surprised. I was expecting the older 5800 to sound better but in reality I really can't seem to tell much difference. The extra 30 wpc and the toroidal power supply in the 5800 obviously don't make the impact when used with my mix&match speaker setup.

If anything, I've noticed that the 4308 has made my multichannel audio have much more presence. I haven't run Audyssey yet, but I will save my 'manual' setup config just in case I prefer it after I have run the auto setup. I don't listen to much in pure 2 channel, instead preferring a more 'night club' like soundstage that I get with 7 channel stereo. I did the same with my 5800.

There is no local HD radio here, but the standard AM/FM tuner work well, as does the networked radio stations. I likely won't get an XM tuner but I'm sure it would work well. Same with the iPod dock - don't own an iPod but my Sansa sounds as good as it did on the old 5800. I only tested the Sansa briefly as I have all my audio available on my home network anyhow.

As I mainly watch HD sources and upconvert everything else through my HTPC or PS3, the extra video processing of the 5308 just wasn't worth the extra cash. If however the 5308 proves to be a real winner when it starts shipping, I may just have to put the 4308 up for sale. But for now, I see no real reason to. Quite happy that I made the (down)-upgrade.

PS: Happy New Year all!!

Those are not firmware releases for the 3808, they are versions of the 'Command3808' application written by a fellow AVS forum contributor. See the full thread about this application here:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=949351

As for actual firmwares for the 3808/4308, I don't know how many have been released but my 10 day old 4308 upgraded to the latest firmware out of the box and so far so good. No major problems to report. If you have specific problems which you think might be firmware related, post them here or on the 'Problems' thread:

All my TW HD STB's w/HDMI proved to be C-R-A-Z-Y so I switched from HDMI to Component and Digi Coax for Audio.

The Denon is not picking up or decoding the Dolby Digital signal right. The LCD shows Dolby Digital yet I am only getting stereo. Some channels work fine others do not.

If I switch to HDMI to "test" the same signal. The 4308 then says Dolby Digital and the sound goes to all 6 speaker or 8 if I opt to turn on the surround backs.

My Scientific Atlanta is set to DIGITAL
I've swapped out 2 digi coax
I have the 4308 on TV/CBL set to SOURCE to decode the signal

Why does the audio work right w/HDMI but not Digi Coax?

Thank you and Happy New Year All

1. Auto lip sync does not seem to work. I have connected the denon HDMI monitor 1 to the 52PFL9632D/10 from philips that also has a hdmi1.3a port. Lip Sync should be negotiated automatically (it is enabled in the Denon). But it does not, no delay is added to de audio. For now manual delay serves me well enough. DOes somebody have this working?

> Yes I've got a 47pfl9732 (same chassis), and latest 4308 Firmware, lip-sync is now working (with the initial firmware version it wasn't). But I think there's some kind of handshake about lip-sync, if I turn on the Denon and the source (PC connected DVI->HDMI) and then the LCD it isn't working all the time. If I turn on TV (input HDMI selected), Denon and PC it's working PERFECT!

Having no indication that lipsync was operational (i.e. how much delay the denon applies) apart from the obvious: the audio being in sync is quote troublesome. When setting manual delay I tend to need about 100ms for 1080p/24 blu ray source material while DVD 576 seems to need a value closer to 175ms.

Thanks.

I am unable to play XM or net to zones 2 or 3 on my 4308. I can find no specific references in the manual suggesting they won't work; only the rather confusing statement about digital and 2 channel pcm when driven by digital inputs. Any help?

i just have a few questions....

i plan on getting the 4308 and the new denon blu ray player the 3800.

i know that the 3800 does all the decoding and scaling on the player...and i know that i can pass it through the reciever so that i can use the realta chip for the upconverting.

Can i select which components i want the reciever to do the work and which componenst i want to do the work....meaning

can i have the blu ray player as pass through but let the reciever do the work for the cable box.

or is the pass thru feature only under one setting meaning on or off

There's been discussion in Denon 3808 & 4308 Bugs, undesired features, and enhancements desired -thread that Denon 3808 messes up two rightmost columns of pixels of 1920x1080 picture - it crops two last vertical pixel-columns (1919&1920) and has infact duplicates of two preceding columns (1917&1918) instead of those.

I've tried to make here example what this might look like when using Windows PC connected via HDMI thru Denon to display:

On the left is upper right part of 1080p resolution desktop directly to full hd panel.

On the right same desktop thru Denon. I've here illustrated what it might look like when rows 1917&1918 are duplicated as 1919&1920.

Has any 4308 owner this issue? This could be easily tested with overscan in your display off and using PC/PS3 and 1080p test pattern available for example here:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...2#post12558172

This probably ain't that big thing when watching BD/HD/DVD/TV waching because of overscan many use, but I'm planning to use my HTPC connected to my receiver where this could be more visible.

Is it possible to listen to music and use my tv as a monitor to show the photo's from my computer as a slide show? I like to listen to the music files on my computer via wifi and was wondering if at the same time set my tv to show the pictures I have on my computer or even listen to internet radio and view my pictures?

Thanks everyone for this thread!

The information here was EXTREMELY HELPFUL in setting up my wifi and pulling off the firmware update of my 4308ci. The manual is a little fuzzy if you know what I mean. I ran into a few minor glitches that were easily remedied after reading the info here.

I did the firmware update last night around midnight. I have one of the very first units, serial number 01xxx, so it needed everything.

I followed the directions almost to the letter off of the Denon website. I did the factory reset prior to the update, but found that my 4308ci would not let me upgrade when I went to the "upgrade firmware" section of the GUI. There was no "start" function available. So, I grabbed the MacBook laptop, went to my 4308ci ip address, and started the firmware update from my firefox web browser. Discovered this little tidbit of info from you guys, accessing the 4308ci through it's ip address. I probably would not have pulled off the update/upgrade without this knowledge.

I have an Apple Airport Extreme wireless router, after a little playing around, it works flawlessly. Again, thank you guys for the help in this regard. I wish I could get a Windows laptop to work wirelessly as easily as the Denon.

But anyways, I did the firmware update over the wifi, no ethernet cable, and it worked without a hitch. It took a little under an hour to upgrade, and maybe a half hour prior, to fiddle with the network wifi settings to access the "upgrade firmware" function via my laptop. After the firmware upgrade the "start" and "check for upgrades" functions are now available from the GUI.

And I cannot believe how good the streaming internet audio sounds! I was listening to a jazz station out of Switzerland, and I could hear the breath of the horn blower between notes. WOW! Crystal clear, I still cannot get over that.

This has got to be the coolest receiver I have ever owned.

I just downloaded eyeconnect from Elgato to access my MacPro for video content. We shall see how that goes today.

Again, thanks to everyone here for your knowledge. I would be lost without you guys!

I've tried to do the same thing. The only way I've been able to view jpegs from my PC while listening to music using the Denon is to access my PC while listening to internet radio. It's slow, and takes patience while the receiver accesses your PC, and then accesses the picture files. If you have your "My Documents" and "My Pictures" folders on the C drive, the receiver will find it. If you've moved your "My Documents" folder to another partition, then you will have to copy the picture files you wish to view to the "Shared Documents" folder on the C drive.

I still have a regular TV and am planning to move to an HD projector this spring. Currently, I have a CV switch with all of the CV outputs from the Denon, the DVD player, the SACD/DVD-A player and the SVideo from the PC connected to it. I'm able to switch back and forth between the various devices external of the Denon and view them on the TV one at a time. The output from the CV switch is connected to one of the TV's CV inputs.

The SACD/DVD-A player has a USB port on it that reads Fat32 files and a CV as well as a HDMI output. I created an FAT32 partion on my external hard drive, copied all of my photo files to it, and am able to view those through the player's USB port, through the CV switch to the TV. This is all external to the Denon. It works quite well, but there is no way to view a "random" slide show using any method that I can think of so far. Doing this, I can play whatever music source I want on the receiver while viewing pictures on the TV.

I think the summary of my long winded answer is that I'm finding solutions to listening to music while watching a photo slide show outside of the Denon. I haven't found a way to do it through the receiver, except when listening to Internet Radio.

My next challenge is to determine how I'm going to split the audio and video of multiple HDMI souces into one HDMI video output for a PJ, while connecting their HDMI audio to the Denon. I'll also need to continue to view the CV menu GUIs from the various components in my system over the same single HDMI video output. So far, I haven't found a scaler/switch that will do everything I want it to do.

ok.. I'm starting to try and learn more about the surround options on this monster and have a question. I'm realizing different options are available to me based on the input signal (Dolby, DTS, 2 channel, etc)

(I use a 6.1 set up as well as Harmony 880)

Regarding SB CH Out.. what is the difference with Non-Matrix and Off? Wouldn't both of these prevent sound from back surround? Does Off prevent EX and ES encoded discs from being recognized?

Also.. is there an easy way to toggle from 5.1 to 6.1 matrix? I'd like to be able to go from Dolby Digital to Doby Digital EX (or DTS to DTS ES) easily without having to go in and alter SB CH Out settings.

Hi Pacbellguy. I retired from there after 28 years. Anyway, the only time I've used Non-Matrix is to 'turn on' the back speakers when I was playing a 'Standard' 5.1 input. This occurred when playing an SACD in DSD mode. The Denon was showing a 5.1 input, and a 5.1 output. When I set the SB CH out to Non-Matrix, the Denon showed a 7.1 output and I had sound in the back surround speakers, so it must do something.

I've had this receiver for months, and I'm still learning about its capabilities. One thing I've learned to do is to check all of the Audio and Surround parameters and settings for each input I can select. I do this often, because it seems for some reason they can change, probably as a result of something I've done.

Question for multizone users.

I was thinking about getting a 4308 as opposed to a 3808 because I was thinking about doing multizone with 2 rooms near each other.

HT Room has all the gear and a 1080p HDMI projector. The Bedroom will just have a 1080i component tv.

If I have my gear setup as 1080p coming in via hdmi will the reciever be able to down rez that to 1080i to the component output to my bedroom?

So it would seem that this receiver can do 7.1 very well: overlay DPLIIx for any 5.1 AND play discrete bitstreamed 7.1 sources..?

Only problem being display working incorrectly (which could be caused by Denon's buggy firmware or incorrectly flagged disc). I could live with this and finally make the decision to move from Onkyo 805 to Denon 3808...

I was able to get an answer about this...

Remeber that there are several flavors of 7.1.. one of which uses 2 extra side surrounds, one of which uses two extra back rear surrounds.

I spoke to New Line about this, and was told that this is indeed just a display issues with the Denon receiver, as the logo uses the later method, and the features use side surrounds, which the Denon display doesn't account for....

Denon is aware of this, was made aware of it when they got their DTS certification, but were too late in the process to make the necessary hardware changes to resolve the issue in time for manufacturing... but rest assured it is only a receiver LCD display issue, and the decode you are hearing is as intended...

I got my 4308 about a month ago, and am still learning about it.

Yesterday I got around to setting up Windows Media player as
a media server, and the Denon can see the files. It plays back
the mp3 files just fine, but the FLAC files do not play. There is
no error message, and the file name shows up on the receiver,
but no sound comes out. Any ideas?

Also, how do I tell what firmware version I have, and whether or
not it is up to date? I see the Update Firmware option, but I do
not want to use it without knowing what version I have, and what
the newer versions offer.

Thanks in advance,
ah

Thanks so very much. This saves a lot of phone calls to Denon and New Line.

I wonder if this can be fixed with a firmware upgrade. Any ideas?

Hello,

I have noticed when I'm listening music from my computer via ethernet wired (a playlist of mp3) between songs, there is a pause. Maybe 1 second. When listening a live album it's unpleasant to hear the cut in the applause. Is there a way to change that. I'm not gonna re-edit those album in 1 giant track...

Thanks
