The "Official" Denon 4308ci Owners Thread - Page 165

I'm new to HDMI so I want to make sure I utilize it correctly.

I've got an AVR-4308CI and a DVD-2910.

Currently I connected my dvd player to the 4308 via the following:

- Composite video out (yellow) RCA from 2910 to 4308 for dvd video
- Coax digital out from 2910 to 4308 for dvd audio
- 2 Channel audio out (white & red) RCA's from 29010 to 4308 for cd audio

Could I replace the video out and coax digital out with one HDMI cable?

Do I keep the two RCA's for the 2 channel audio for cd audio or can HDMI do that as well? Can I just assign HDMI 1 as the CD source input?

Thanks.

This is extremely annoying. Any thoughts on how I can fix it?

Thanks.

Can anyone help with this?

Thanks.

Yes, you can likely just use the HDMI connection for both DVD and CD, although in some instances the setup requires the TV to be ON even when just playing a CD. If that happens, simply make a second connection of either coax digital or RCA and use another source name for the CD connection.

Denon hasn't openly published a firmware changelog in several years. AFAIK, the latest firmware update for the 4308CI was required for the Rhapsody server updates. The only upgrade available is the $100 feature upgrade package which includes Audyssey Dyn EQ/Vol.

i already have that upgrade pak. i think that update pak itself has yet another update as well. all i know is i havne't upgraded for awhile and now i just did another upgrade.... dunno what it was about though =P

PS maybe i just uncovered an update no 4308ci owners know about yet?? =P
post #4927 of 5033
^^
There's only one "upgrade" available (Dyn EQ/Vol), while there have been numerous "updates" designed to fix issues.
I did the Dyn EQ/vol upgrade...1.5 yrs ago?
Anyway I've checked 4-6 weeks ago, no update.
I'm in USA region.
(with all the PS3 updates I get decided to check Denon)
i'm in the US too. i already had the dyn eq/vol. upgrade similar to you a year to 1.5 years ago. however...

i just did an upgrade like a few days ago for the lolz. then i was SHOCKED to see an update!!! very shocked.

woke up this morning, checked, and holy smokes there is an update....after all this time.

Rather than doing the update and bricking my 4308CI, does JDsmoothie know what this is for??

I also posted on Denon facebook wall same Q http://www.facebook.com/denonusa

Its been years since a firmware update was out there for my 2008 4308CI, now I just checked and see one is there. I have the feature pack already, what is this for? I check every few months, so this is recent.

Please post here should you hear back from Denon.

At the moment no. My sources for changelog information are no longer with Denon so I'm attempting to establish a new source for changelog information until Denon starts publishing the information on their website again and will report back if it's provided to me.
As I posted on FB I am assuming this is a contractual change to update or remove support for something. It's unlikely to be a "be nice to consumers because we're great" update.
^^
AFAIK, unlike Denon USA, Denon Europe regularly publishes the changelog infomation for each model so you should have access to it by owning an EU model.

Peter, since you are in the UK, can you register on the Denon site and get info on what this update is for?
Well I got out of bed to go verify there is an update and I did not see an upgrade option or update?
I got this response from the Denon facebook page a short while ago:
Quote:
This is not a Denon affiliated website. Our firmware information is not publicly published, so I'm not sure where this information is coming from. There are no updates to the AVR-4308CI that will remove functionality.

(I posted the 3808/4308 Firmware Version Tracking wiki link, so they responded to that and also Peter Galbavy facebook comment)

and also Denon posted this to facebook
Quote:
A quick follow up: The last update released was in August 2011. Rhapsody had made changes to their service and this update was released to compensate.

So, maybe my Denon does not have the Aug-2011 update??
I swear I checked updates since then, hopefully I'm not having a simple 49 year old brain moment

3808/4308 Firmware Version Tracking

Firmware version A2.07, *LATEST* - 3808/4308 owners report (FPU/update reported August 19, 2011 - Denon territory North America

BUGS/UPDATE ISSUES

1. Web controller Setup Menu, Information, Audio Input Signal displays incorrect format 3/3/.1 when should be 3/2/.1 as displayed in GUI interface.

2. Owner reports audio dropouts when playing the new Star Wars Saga discs (Episodes 2 and 4). Note: Subsequent Owner reports indicate this audio dropout problem was already resolved several firmware updates ago back in April 2010. Be sure to update to latest firmware if you are experiencing this problem.

3. Net Radio favorites and presets lost after update. Must manually re-enter any presets present before update.

4. Recommend enabling power saving feature for best web controller functionality.

5. Internet radio AAC streams sound is stuttering or garbled playback. No known workaround. Denon must fix with firmware update.

So, did you update your firmware?

I'm waiting a good weekend to do it, because as you know after an update need to re-run Audyssey....which for me means kids in bed, quiet, etc.

I picked up an hdmi cable and hooked it up but had a problem. No video.

I've got the cable connected to the hdmi out on my DVD-2910 to hdmi input 1 (dvd) on the 4308. I went into the menu and assigned hdmi q as the input for DVD. With a DVD playing, the player display flashes 480p or whatever I have it set at. The manual says the flashing means it's checking the connection and should stop flashing when complete. It never stops flashing.

I have my old school tv hooked up to the coax monitor output. With hdmi coming in, is the signal only sent to the hdmi output 1?

I left the hdmi cable hooked up and reconnected my coax video output and digital coax audio from the 2910 to the 4308. I then got audio and video even though I still had the DVD input assigned to hdmi 1.

I'm lost. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Thanks.

There is no HDMI--> analog (video or audio) down conversion. If you want to pass video to an analog TV you must input the signal as analog as you did in your second attempt. Composite analog inputs are not assignable and simply use the source label the cable is connected to so as there was no HDMI video to take priority, the analog video signal was free to pass through.

Jdsmoothie,

Thanks for your help and explanation.

Not that it necessarily matters, but aren't the component inputs assignable?

Yup, however, AFAIK, the OP is using a "composite" video cable (edited my previouis post to be more clear).

I have a question regarding the video capability of 4308ci. I have a brand new 1080p Samsung tv, a new 1080p apple tv, and a new bluray dvd player. All these components go through my denon via hdmi cables. This 4308ci is about five years old. Am I losing any video quality by using the 4308ci still? Or does the 4308ci not affect video quality at all? Thats probably a simple question, but i dont know how it exactly works. Or, should I have all the new components go directly to the tv? Or should I buy a better Denon? I am not as concerned at all about audio.
Thanks in advance for the advice!
^^
If you're not concerned at all with audio, you don't need an AVR ... simply connect your devices directly to the TV. Otherwise, if you have all 1080p sources then the video chip in the 4308CI isn't doing much, so you would set the "i/P Scaler" setting for each soure to OFF so the video simply passes through to the TV without being processed.

Like most of the users i am routing everything through the receiver and one HDMI cable going in to Samsung UN55D8000. I bought a Harmony 900 recently as i have put all my equipment behind the wall where the TV is hanging.

Questions
  • My TV has lot of Apps and i want to use the audio output of the TV sent to reciever. So i hooked up a optical cable to the reciver and TV. Question is if i have to have activity for Watching TV and another activity for Watching APPS in TV how do i keep the same Source in my case for Denon its SAT but change the audio dynamically from HDMI to optical cable.
  • Are there any best known methods for using harmony 900 and the denon reciever.

I would really appreciate the help.
^^
They are two different sources .... cable/sat box (SAT) via HDMI and TV apps (TV) via optical.
When you assign input in Denon how do i choose only TV
post #4950 of 5033
^^
Assign the optical input to another source name (eg. TV/CBL).
