When I sold mine on Audiogon I believe it sold for $750 which was over a year ago. I see 886s going for around $800 so I guess the selling prices of the 885s would be relative to that. I would suggest Audiogon as Onkyo gear seems to move pretty quickly over there. What are you looking to replace the 885 with?
I bought mine under the same scenario...shoponkyo
The 5 year warranty is transferable
The unit was inexpensive enough that I bought it sight unheard....as I mentioned before I am satisfied with it...but it is/was a step backwards in musicality from the Chiro( Kinergetics Research) units that preceded it.
As for replacement...I had a long conversation with the Anthem dealer here in town on Friday
First off..it will not be an Anthem..no matter what I think I can't afford it
He is also a Rotel,Integra, Denon, Levinson,Arcam,Bryston dealer
I explained my situation and what I was dissatisfied with and my budget.
He said that the Integra 80.2 is an incredible piece and they are selling well and nothing is even close to that price point that offers anywhere near that performance
He said I "might" like the Rotel..it was more musical than the Integra...but he gave the nod to HT to the Integra
I mentioned the Denon AVP-A1HDCI(A) ...his comment was that they didn't show that piece as he really had never had a market for Denon at that price point..and he said he had never even heard that piece before. From a retail level customers in that budget range didn't tend to be interested in Denon I was told
I didn't mention to him that I had found a refurb for more than 50% off retail..LOL
I REALLY like the specs on the Denon AVP-A1HDCI(A) preamp ...and listening to a denon 4310 receiver I have at home right now...its more musical than the 885 is..so I would expect this unit to take that to another level. I also like the "tech" edge with the change on the fly settings and overlay over HDMI output video. Again..I am speaking of the receiver and assume the preamp would have the same functionality
I also got a quote on the Onkyo 5508..it was less than the Integra 80.2 at my local dealer by a bit
He also told me..in an indirect way....that finding everything I wanted, in my budget, was a challenge.
I mentioned the Marantz piece as its close in price to the 5508...but there is not a dealer in town so I have no opportunity to demo it either
The refurbed Denon is about double what I was quoted on a new 5508...plus I would have to pay sales tax on the Denon as well
I am not willing to spend as much as the Denon costs without hearing it...and the website it is on has a "no returns" policy...LOL
So anyway..the short answer is..I really don't know what the replacement will be
I know many have a second set up for music....as that was a less expensive alternative than buying a higher end preamp.
My best case scenario is that they will lower the refurbed denon to the Onkyo 5508 price
For that price I would buy the Denon sight unheard
I posed the question on my 885 to try to see what I could get expect on the back end from a new unit purchase.
