The lowest price they were selling the 885 for, when people were getting them for roughly $500 with the extra discounts, was almost a give away for a 885. But they wised up quite a bit on the pricing that they were selling the 886 for.

The deal I got for the 886 from shoponkyo was still quite nice.

Not counting what you sold off your 885 for, and making a profit off it. The price they were selling the 886 for, was not anywhere near the deal as what the 885 was going for.

Depending on how many shop onkyo points you had I guess you could have gotten the 885 for roughly $500...I paid a bit more than that but not much.
What was really inexpensive were those 805,875,905 receivers they were selling...with the plentiful inventory, the holiday percentage discount and the shop Onkyo points some people got those for a firesale...and from what I see are selling them for about what they paid 2 years ago..not a bad deal..unless your HDMI board went south...but anyway

I remember seeing the 886 at $799 at one time...tempting...but I didn't think it was worth the move.
A4L also had them for a bit more..maybe $999
Additionally, while doing some research on how much I could get for my 885 in the past few days...I have seen a couple used 885's and the Integra version for just under $700.The Integra was actually at a dealer who had taken it in on trade and he was listing his price or best offer...which makes me think it was not his bottom dollar

I still have that 5507 counter offer hanging out there that frankly I think I am going to pass on

Thank you!

I have decided that I'm going to sell my 885. After the auction is over, if the person doesn't want the rack mount ears, I'd be willing to send them to you for just the cost of shipping. I'll keep you posted via PM.

What offer are you talking about on the 5507?

Wow turnne1, you really get around on this site. I saw all your quotes over in the Denon 4310 threads.

I'm thinking of selling my 885 and the Denon 4310 I picked up in Dec to get a 5507. I cannot stand the Denon 4310.

Please let me know. I may be in the market for another 885. This first one was for a client, I'm interested in personally getting one as well. Please post a link to the auction,
Thanks

Does anyone know if it's possible to widen the center-width for movies? I see that PLIIx mode can do it for music, but I'd like to apply it to movies. Currently I'm using THX Ultra2.

If you are still in the market....there is a VERY COMPELLING price one on Videogon for sale...it was there yesterday anyway

below $500

Just found it, thank you for the tip!
How trustworthy is the buying/selling process on that site? I have never used it.

Its not so much the site but the seller that is the main factor when buying components online. I looked at the ad and the seller has a limited history on Videogon. The one factor that would concern me is the seller does not list Paypal as a means of payment. Unless I know the seller I have never bought any components unless I can pay with Paypal. Also always ask the seller for pictures if they are not shown in the ad.

I got a quote on a 5508 at about 28% off retail...I passed.
I don't think that unit is going to offer enough over the 885..or better said address the inadequecies I find in the 885 well enough for me to pay the extra money

The reason you saw me all over the 4310 forum was that after that during the Best Buy blowout I bought 3 of the 4310's, 2 Pioneer Elite SC25's... Yamaha Z7, RXV1900 and an Onkyo 807...as well as several assorted Vienna Acoustics speakers

I have now sold everything( or given as a holiday gift) except the Z7 and 807 and a few assorted Vienna Acoustics speakers
Either the yamaha Z7 or the Onkyo 807 is going to be sold as well..just not sure which one yet

My original intention was to keep one of the 4310's...honestly because of its MSRP I thought I would REALLY like it
I was wrong..no worries though..I made a solid profit on all 3 of the 4310's I sold

I actually bought a 4308 dealer demo unit with the proceeds from the three 4310's...I like it a lot better than the 4310...still not nirvana..but it has more guts than the 4310, but a few less "tricks"

I noticed that as well...the item says "SOLD" now also

I would very hesitant to send a check/MO to a seller I didn't know

The ONLY time I have bought something on the site...the seller told me that he preferred checK or MO..I declined and said Paypal or nothing

Even with that..it took him 5 days to ship the item after I paid with Paypal..and I could not get ahold of him during this time

The item finally showed up and was fine...but you can imagine I thought I had been sniped....I would have really been freaked out if I had paid with check or MO

I did not go after it, as you say, it seemed pretty risky and with a low rating I wasn't ready to lose $500.
The price was almost too good...

I'm sure there will be other good deals on the 885. Keep an eye on Audiogon for the Integra 9.8 as well as it is essentially the 885 without the Pure audio mode.

I'd sell mine for $700 plus shipping if anyone is interested. The firmware is updated and there would be an Audyssey Pro license (worth $150) included with it.

Send PM if interested!

Jeff,

What are you replacing the 885 with?

I knew it was only a matter of time. Good Luck with the upgrade.

Thanks, Paul. I'll have an AS-EQ1 for sale as well once the 885 goes.

Jeff
I think I will be selling mine as well shortly
That along with a Parasound 7100 preamp as well

I am itching for an upgrade in a big way as there are a couple of areas where I was never really satisfied with the 885...the price was very good though!

Trouble is....what I want I cant afford...and there is nothing out there ,right now, that I have heard that compels me to make a move

I was hoping there would be some firesales on the Denon preamp...its not happening

the 5508 is an easy move financially...but based on what "I think" its limitations would be..$1200 is probably my top dollar for one of those units
I have yet to get a quote that is at that price on that unit. I have seen some refurbs on A4L..but they are the same price as I was quoted for a new one..No thanks

I could go an listen to the Integra version( of the 5508) at one of my local B&M stores

decisions...decisions

The integra won't meet your price criteria either.

And it is worth same amount to me as the Onkyo

So ..hence the main reason I don't have either one...but when/if either gets to $1200 I would pull the trigger

You would think there would be something that offered more than the Onkyo/Integra products..but wasn't priced as high as the Anthem and Denon products

That gap in price is pretty wide...one would think there would be something in the middle of the two

However, the Marantz AV7005 surround processor with an MSRP of $1,499 provides serious competition. I suggest that Warren read the review in the most recent issue of Home Theater Magazine and join the Marantz AV7005 thread.

Larry

It would not surprise me if the Onkyo unit will be in my "value" range in a short period of time..the latest deals I have heard are only $300 away..and that is $200 better that I heard just 2 months ago

Actually I need to correct you what you said was my price criteria...its more appropriate to say "price to performance" criteria. I would have no issue paying full retail for the piece if that was met. Actually the 885 meets that criteria for what paid.
As for the Marantz unit, it has already crossed my mind
The issue there is no one in my area is a Marantz dealer...except MHT..and I am not even sure they can get it..even through a special order
The other "full line" Marantz dealer went out of business months ago..even though Marantz still them listed on the website

And I would not buy the piece sight unheard...
FYI..and many/most may already know this..the street price of two from the quotes I have gotten is substantially different

Would that be listening in your system?

That would be preferred greatly

However..I can make a decision doing an A&B situation in someone's showroom

if you remember/recall I bought the 885 sight unseen/unheard..primarily based on how impressed I was with the 875 receiver and of course the deal at Shop Onkyo . I didn't think I could wait and pass it up.

Come to think of it I bought the 875 receiver sight unseen/unheard as well..didn't think I could go wrong for $599 for a THX ultra receiver with those specs

I am very satisfied with those 2 units for the prices I paid..esp the 875 receiver.
Do I think the 5508 will give me more than the 885 for HT applications
Yes
But that is not my primary shortcoming with the 885
I guess what I would most like to hear is a former( or current 885) owner who now has the 5508 and is a critical 2 channel music listener and what their thoughts are between the 2
Actually ..and I know this is a stretch...would be nice if that person could give me some input...comparatively speaking, on some other preamps, that I have heard as well

The shop that quoted me on both units only told me he preferred the Onkyo to the Marantz because its more forward sound, even given the price difference. The Marantz was too laid back for his tastes, he said. He said this could be the opposite situation for the next listener if you are a fan of "laid back"

after typing my last post..and thinking about what I had bought without doing any type of demo

thinking about it a moment..as strange as this may sound

I actually think the Onkyo 875 receiver and PRC885 preamp are worth more than I paid for them

and both were purchased sight unseen/unheard

And that likely has everything to do with what I think the 5508 is worth..because I am comparing what I paid for the 885 to the come to a cost for the 5508...rather that what I think the 5508 is worth in a pure sense

I have to be honest and say the last part of your post is like a "Who's On First" skit.

If you were happy with SQ of both the 875 and the 885 then I am willing to bet the 5508 will also make you happy. I will make a bold prediction and say that you will not be seeing the 5508 on shoponkyo at the prices they had for the 885. I was also fortunate to get the 885 for the unreal prices shoponkyo was selling them for. Then I got my 886 there as well but not at the blow out pricing of the 885 but still a smokin' deal.

You can have a value in your head as to what the 5508 should cost but you might never see that price for new units. Either you step up and pay the going rate or stay with what you have. You can get all the prices you want but even with the 5507 the prices (that I had seen) did not drop that much. Good luck.

Bill
