Best wishes, Craig. I was going to ask you a question about the speakers, but obviously they are very insignificant compared to the health and well-being of family and other loved ones. Good luck.

Definitely speaks for me - take care of yourself and family Craig.

Thanks, guys. I am in my home office now, and my wife is in constant contact with my older sister, who is a nurse practicioner here in Erie.

It is grim, though some numbers have come up, and they are hitting her system with antibiotics, and trying to stabilize her white cell count.

Craig,

Best wishes, thoughts, and prayers to you and your family.

Thanks to all for the kind words, prayers and well wishes for my sister. It is now 7 hours since I talked to my Dad, and no news is good news.

Right now, I am doing the "hurry up, wait, pray and hope" routine.

To anyone who is non-religious, I hope this does not come across as preachy.

My thoughts are with you and your family Craig. Family comes first.

I am not religious but it does not come across as preachy. I think in times like this we all come toghether to pray, hope and want a a "get well quick" result no matter where we are in the religious scheme of things.

Craig, let me echo the hopes and wishes of everyone else here and let you know I'm pulling for your sister. I can sure relate... At this moment I'm writing from my cousins' place in Jersey. I'm here for a few days because my cousin committed suicide this past Thursday and I came up to support his widow and 3 children. I wasn't all that close with him actually but I'm very close with his wife and his son and everyone's kind of still in shock. Anyway I hope your sister pulls through!

Thanks to all for the kind words ... we got no news overnight, and it has now been 19 hours. Every hour means more medicines are at work, toxins being removed from her system, and is this is all a good thing.

Back to loudspeakers ... I was up early, again. This morning I took a graph to show the relative sensitivity of an Acculine A1 to the Ascend 340.

Each is of a single speaker, with the microphone directly in front of each speaker's half way point.

The microphone, of course, was exactly one meter away from each speaker.

The number to concentrate on is in the upper left hand corner:

The Ascend 340's ...

The Acculine A1's ...

With the identical signal, the Ascends produced 82.22 dB to the Acculine's 82.65 dB .. a 0.43 dB difference. EDIT: This is not a one watt @ one meter signal, but rather a steady state test tone using the same volume output on my McIntosh MA-6900 Amplifier. Both speakers are more efficient than 82.XX dB. I did not want anyone thinking the speakers in question were that far below spec.

With the exception of the Swans, I can do this test with any of the speakers, and post results.

I hope these graphs will help those who think some of the speakers were handicapped by a 4 dB attenuation.

Wow...it still amazes me that real world sensitivity rarely matches the manufacturer's.

I sure hope your sister is feeling better! Best wishes to you and yours buddy!

Craig,

I am mainly a lurker here But I always find your posts informative and and your generosity to the AVS community stuns me. Your the kind of guy that makes the internet work. Thoughts and Prayers with your family right now. I hope your Sister gets well soon.

Very informative post Craig. Hopefully it will put the questions about "flawed testing" to rest.

All the best wishes to your family as well.

Craig, along with the others you've got my thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.

And I do appreciate all that you do with the speaker tests and "get togethers". You are one of the good guys.

Here's a combined graph of no screen no attenuation (top), screen + 1dB (middle) and screen + 2dB (bottom) of craig's measurements of the previous page:

The effect as I mentioned seems to be real, be it from the switcher or screen or combination of both. at 1khz, 1db & 0db graphs closely matches, but anything > 2khz starts to vary quite a bit, showing 2 or even 4dB variations...

With the 2dB, it's even worst. It starts about 1.5dB lower (at 1khz), but then even considering that 1.5dB, it shows variations of again 4dB without the screen and above 3khz, vs without the screen/switcher. That's really quite a big difference, and really shows that it has quite an effect on the sound... Both on the mids and the top end.

So it does appear that it will actually recesses both. So a brighter speaker, or with more forward mids/treble would sound better balanced, and a neutral speaker would somewhat sound more recessed than it usually sounds without the veil/switch.

So this proves that proves that the veil/switcher DO have a measurable effect on the sound of the speakers. And that it WILL alter the sound of the speakers.

Gents, I am leaving for Alaska Thursday morning - the first flight is at 6 AM.

She has been moved to a critical care unit, and it is pretty bleak right now.
Damn Craig, this is terrible. As many have already stated, my thoughts and prayers are with you as well. Life is such a fragile thing, yet we don't look at it in those terms until one of us is faced with something like this!
Be strong my friend!
