Is the HDMI switching/Upconverting Yamaha recievers worth it??? *other reciever sugs?

Hey guys, the title pretty much says it all but let me give you a more detailed run down.

I'm thinking I will probably wind up with a Panasonic plasma, the 77u or perhaps a Sony SXRD set although I'm leaning more towards the 77U at this point. The Panasonic is a 768p set and the Sony is a 1080p set.

I will also be purchasing a 5.1 surround system with the possibility of going 7.1 in the future. I've decided that I need at least 100W/ch preferrably more than that.

What I've noticed is that Yamaha seems to offer a lot of power for the money and personally I have always had great luck with Yamaha products in the past. I think for what you pay they are built really well. However I am open to any other suggestions you may have.

So the questions then become is the HDMI switching/upconverting or component upconverting worth it on a reciever? Does it do a better job then say the TV itself or an upconverting DVD player? Are the processors in these recievers any good? Other than the possibility of consolidating a few cables am I going to see any appreciable benefit?

I've read up on the Yamaha 661 and it offers a lot of power at considerable savings over the upconverting/HDMI Yamaha recievers with similar power. But i have little experience with these higher end recievers in the Yamaha line.

Again I'm open to any other reciever suggestions you may have. Budget is a max of 1000 dollars on the reciever, preferrably more like 750 or less.

Thanks for any help you can give.

well, if your patient, yamaha will be releasing their new receiver models by the end of the year. Support of hdmi 1.3. , the RX-V1800 should be in your price range.

I'm in no hurry. In fact my HT savings plan recently hit a major stumbling block. I'm working on my MBA work is paying for it but after 5250 in work reimbursement my tuition is now considered taxabe So basically They're witholding about 700 dollars in taxes twice a month! That amounts to basically 260/mo more than normal sapping much of my HT savings

Ouch, there are alot of great receivers out there, I also feel that yamaha products are amazing, especially for their price. I think I was brain washed by yamaha, but thats another story. Anyway, I'm pretty excited about the up comming receivers later on this year. Right now I have the HTR-5960, and when the RX-V1800 comes out, I'll probably be picking one up a few months after release - to allow for reviews, and if any bugs pop up. Its supposed to have 4 hdmi inputs, and 1 output. be Hdmi 1.3a compatable, and more than enough power per channel (I think 120 watts)

Is the upconversion any good on these recievers?

I like the idea of HDMI switching just for the sake of keeping things less complicated going to the TV however, if the upconversion isn't any better than the TV I may not want to spend the extra few hundred bucks necessary to get the HDMI switching....make sense?

Well, based on what I know about the RX-v1700 the analog to hdmi upconversion isn't the greatest available. With that said, I can't comment on the newer RX-V1800 as I don't know. Now that it has 4 inputs and 1 output, it may mean newer, better hdmi hardware, which could mean better scalers (I believe its a possibility). Going to have to wait and see.

Thank you for input, it is greatly appreciated. I'll monitor the reviews of some of the new receivers when they come out that is forsure.

Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

This is the cheapest receiver worth considering.

Unless you're a pansy. And I don't have time for pansies.

It's your money, if you want to throw 7 grand at a box go for it, but I would bet it dosnt sound much better than mine. Sure it has some more inputs, but certainly not 6,800 dollars worth. For that money, I would go seperate pieces. But hey, if you have the money, then whatever floats your boat.

-note: holy monkey butt batman - that receiver weights 92 lbs.

It sounds like angels farting. Yours probably sounds like uncle Cletus after a fried chicken dinner.

So do you have any suggestions for something within my budget?

Budgets are for weepy women. Real men spend money with reckless abandon.

EDIT: But I guess if you have to adhere to a budget, you could go with the Denon 987, which is the same beast as the 2807 (got mine for less than $750 through an authorized dealer). A bunch of people will tell you to get an Onkyo, but if you do that, you're letting the terroists win.

For the most part, I'd let your TV or upconverting DVD player upscale, since a receiver in your range probably won't include a scaler as good.
