Honestly, the Onkyo is far brighter than the Yamaha and not as natural to my ear. Meaning the dialogue is a tad more harsh sounding and the louder portions tend to be rough.
To give you an idea, I have the Onkyo settings very close to the way I had the Yamaha set, since it's the same room, so all the sounds should be close in comparison.
I like the Onkyo sound quite a bit though, it just lacks that "organic" sound that Yamaha has both with film and music presentations.
Of course I'm running B&W for the L, C, R, and Boston Acoustic di-poles for the left and right rear, along with Boston Acoustic bookshelf for the center rears. So my sound is always going to be somewhat "crisp" with those speakers and ANY AVR.
All in all, I've been very happy with the audio presentations through the Onkyo with DVD, HD-DVD and Blu-Ray.
The downside is that damn A/V Sync and the hideous amount of time it takes for video switching.
Having said all that, when these new Yamahas come out, I will be first in line for either the highest ...800 or the Z11.
