Upon choosing DTS HDMA on Cast Away and playing the movie, the 5308 was NOT showing that it was receiving DTS HDMA. I think the person who "set up" the 5308 didn't set the inputs correctly, so I will try to get back and try SD DVD and set the 5308 correctly today.

If you are hearing audio on the 5308, then the input is correctly set to Auto or HDMI... I haven't yet found a way to get the HD-MA bitstream to decode the Core when the stream is coming over HDMI.

Is the 2500 set for "BD Audio Mode = HD Audio Output" and "HDMI Audio Out = HDMI Multi (Normal)" on the Audio Function setup page?

Oppo 980 -> Denon 2500 -> Onkyo 875 =

Larone

How does the PQ compare against your previous player?

In this setup it replaced a Panasonic BD30, for Blu-rays (1080p24) it looks indentical to the Panasonic. I use my oppo for sd-dvd's so I can't comment there.

Sounds like Denon may have over complicated (as they always seem to do) the audio function set-up menu on the 2500. Hopefully it'll all be figured out before I get my unit

John.. those are the only two options, and are clearly explained in the manual.
I can't find this in the manual anywhere, is this "transport" profile 1.1. Does the transport label make it 1.1 exempt?

Exactly

Especially since i read somewhere (cant remember looking through all these denon blu ray threads) that one of the members on here talked to denon and they said the 2500 would be the perfect match for any of their new receivers that have the on board audio decoders and video scalers. i honestly wouldnt even mind if there were a resolution button on the remote but going into the menu every time is ridiculous for a 1 g blu ray player

Unless I'm missing something I don't see any seperate resolution settings for dvd and blu-ray. I'll expirement with this Auto function and see what that does.

BTW, I asked this above, is this transport profile 1.1?

So the picture Q looks identical to the BD30?

Well, that settles it....I'm keeping my BD30.

Yup.....Any one else care to share their thoughts? I don't have an hdmi switcher so I had to swap cables manually, but I couldn't tell any difference between this player and the Panasonic @ 1080p24, I haven't tried 1080p60 yet. Both players appeared equally sharp and colors were perfect on both.

Now build quality, that's a totally different story, this thing was heavier than I expected. The loads times are also pretty good.

Keep in mind, I'm using a 52inch XBR4 and you're using a 120" screen, YMMV. Are you looking at this model Joe or the 3800?
I think I will stick with what I got for awhile to. Thanks for the honesty. We appreciate it.
I was contemplating the 3800 but decided against it since I have my 905 do the audio plus I get great SD playback using my HD805 and crystalio II combo. So I figured the 2500 would be nice for superior Blu ray playback and then like before have my 905 do the audio. But since the picture Q is close to the BD30 then there really is no point to replace it with the Denon 3800 or the 2500... If the load times were different but the BD30 kicks butt when it comes to those to...
To be totally honest I'm not sure why I purchased this player, I think I liked the way it looks, as ridiculous as that sounds. It does function beautifully however and doesn't have the LFE bug that seems to plague the BD30's. I don't think anyone with an hdmi 1.3 receiver/processor will be disappointed with this unit.

I wanted to see a difference but it just didn't happen for me. Oh well, the Panasonic goes to the bedroom and the Denon stays in the home theater. Nevertheless, I think your display size would be best for discerning a difference, if there is one.
Good point. I may try one still... It would seem odd if I didn't.
So has anyone with an HDMI 1.3 receiver sucessfully decoded a Master Audio soundtrack bitstreamed from the 2500 yet?

If you decide to purchase one let us know, I would be curious to see what your findings are. For what it's worth I did think the BD30 looked slightly better than the Samsung 1400 it replaced.

I can report back later this evening, I did try a true HD track without incident.

I forget the settings and couldnt get back to the location today, I should have more time tomorrow, and I may even crack out the manual.

I would appreciate that. My 2500 should be here on Friday and I am in a bit of a high-def tizzy.

I'm not that concerned w/ video quality. I've yet to see a single newer generation BD player that didn't have STUNNING picture quality. I'm after superior build quality, good ergonomics, smooth (not choppy) FF and REW, speedy chapter skipping (w/ chapter indication), speedy menu navigation, improved load times, OSD w/ remaining time, and of course bitstream capability so I can access DTS MA tracks. Anybody care to comment about any of these functions???

I can comment on the menu functions. The menus looked fairly primitive and were a bit slow in responding to button pushed on the remote IMO.

Why would identical 1080p/24 output be surprising? If there was a difference, then one or both players are implementing unnecessary processing steps to achieve the 1080p/24 signal. In terms of 1080p/24 output, Blu-ray players are usually good at directly transmitting what's on the disc after decoding.

It's the blu-ray profile.

1.0 supports just playing the disc
1.1 supports playing + PIP
2.0 supposrt playing + PIP + ethernet so you can access live content from the movies website (like HD-DVD does).

I was super pumped about the 2500 until I found out it's not even out, and the profile has been changed again. So, if you're looking for a BR player that's 100% future proof, then you'll have to look elsewhere.

But on the flip side, if you never plan on accessing the live content, then it really doesn't matter.

There are still differences in the decoders. Some are slightly better than others. The Samsung 1400 and PS3 both read 1080p/24 off the disc, but many will say the BD30 is slightly better (and based on my experience).

I'm more concerned with disc menu functions. Especially w/ BD-J's? Player menu functions I only access once in a great while. So I could care less if they are slow or primitive looking.

Guess I'll get answers when my machine arrives (I obviously have to learn patience)

Thanks, I know what the profiles are but is this player/transport profile 1.1?
Why would there be a difference? I don't know but maybe since one is over twice as much as the other one might expect it to have at the very least slightly better picture Q. I realize we may have hit the ceiling with 1080p/24 but then there is not a snowball's chance in hell I would buy the 3800 to have the same picture Q as my BD30k. ANd yes the 30K had better pic Q then my 1400. I would say the 95FD and the 30K were very close but I still give the edge to the Panny due to being able to tweak the picture with its vast adjustments...
