Got a new Plasma, Just how fragile is it?

I just got a great deal on a Samsung 5054 (50 inch plasma 720p) from Sears of all places. I have had it running now for about 3 weeks and I was wondering.

I hear a lot about burn in and I did take that into consideration when I bought a plasma. Just how easy is it to burn in an image on the screen. I ask because I watch a lot of baseball on the TV and there is ALWAYS a logo from the local station in the lower right corner (MASN). Will this burn in the screen?

If I use my plasma as a computer screen to check email and such, how long will it take to burn in the task bar and icons and stuff? I stress that I RARELY use it as a monitor and that is not is't main function, but sometimes it is just easiest to grab a web page off the TV than run all the way upstairs to the office, turn on the laptop/PC and get a page there. I use SAGETV as my source running from a PC so all I have to do is minimize the interface and pull up IE.

For its burn-in period try reducing the picture brightness within its first 100-200 hours to help prevent burn-in. You will need to have all your lights turned off at night while looking at a black screen to see burn-in. Also watching normal television will not be prone to burn. However, a computer screen left on for hours could cause burn-in. Overall, I wouldn't worry about this issue. Just enjoy HD at its bliss on your Samsung!

Use the pixel shift feature and dont do marathon internet sessions with it and you should be fine.
The sports logos, while they may give you some image retention from time to time, its nothing that a simple change of the channel wont cure.
If things get really bad, use the all white screen or the shifting screen to clear it up.
Enjoy!

Yeah my kid likes to get close to the TV and comes close to hitting it several times.

How much abuse can these things take? None?
What sort of damage would it cause nicks or cracks? Will the whole things shatter?

It actually takes much more abuse than one may think, in order to shatter the front glass. I threw a desk lamp (real hard too!) at my Panny 600U last year, and it barely nicked the front glass. No shatter. No pieces every where. Just a relatively deep nick (right in the middle, which is why I replaced the tv). The lamp was destroyed, but the Panny survived quite well. I kept on using it for months after that.

With my Samsung 4253, station logos aren't as much of a problem, as most stations now make them a light translucent white or gray color, but the scoreboard themselves can be problems, especially when the text is bright white in a black box, or black text in a bright white box. I tend to get IR within watching any game for at least an hour, especially the ESPN/ABC scoreboards.

Luckily, the Samsungs come with screen burn utilites, and one of them, the Signal Pattern, is very effective in removing IR and burn-in. I run this during commercial breaks and bathroom breaks, and none of the IR has resulted in permanent burn-in.
