In need of some general advice...

Thread Starter
Hey everyone, this is my first time posting although I've always monitored threads to get some info.

However, after searching, I haven't really gotten the complete information that I am looking for.

I currently own a 42" HDTV and blah blah blah I obviously love it. I own an HD-DVD player and an Xbox 360, so I feel I have utilized my display to a great deal. However, my audio is severely lacking. I am currently running a four year old Sony set up that I got from Target for about $250. To say the least, I am short-changing my set.

The reason I am posting is to get some general advice on what are some good sets to look for. I am on a pretty tight budget (in college, not making a whole lot right now!), so what I really want to know is what are some great budget speakers that will do me for the next year or so until I graduate? I have been scouring eBay, craigslist, etc. and have found reasonably priced sets for what I consider to be good brands, but with out being able to test them I really have no idea if the speakers are really any good or not. So, general info on some good sets would be appreciated so that I can maybe narrow my search and find ways to test them out.

Thanks in advance.

idioteque122 - suggest you post these parameters, and it will get people focused :
(1) Are you looking to buy two mains only, two mains and a sub, all speakers for 5.1?
(2) What's the target-to-upper-end of your budget - $250, $500, $750, $1000...?
(3) Is your plan to get the best sound for you money buying used, or do you want recomendations on new equipment?

I'm looking for a 5.1 set-up, but do not mind piecing it together--which leads me to my next parameter which is that I prefer used because I feel I could get more for my money.

My budget is MAX $500, but would be absolutely more comfortable spending near $300.

The room that my TV is in is relatively small, at around 12x12.

for a full 5.1 system at $500 I'd check out the Athena B1.2s and C1.2 center from audioadvisor, that matched with the Bic H-100 sub would be at or maybe a few $$ over your budget and is a killer budget system.

These speakers go one sale all the time for $50. I would keep watching. Might be something your interested in.

Ok, here is what I have potentially worked out (for around $200-$250 including shipping).

Athena R1.2 surround sound speakers
Polk CS245 center channel
Mitsubishi SS-2100 left and right speakers (oldie but goodie?)
Sony subwoofer (pending model number verification)

I will probably keep the receiver I have for now until I have enough money to upgrade that.

The only "if" I have is the Mits speakers. Are these any good?

Have you considered waiting till you get out of college and start work in the real world? Then ideally you'll have more income as well as a better environment in which to build a nicer system.

I used JBL Control 1X monitors for satellites that cost me $70/pr. along with an inexpensive sub.

They don't sound too bad and the total cost was about $500. You'll be amazed how much you can crank those up.

I would by some used M&K small speakers. You might have to wait to complete it but it is well worth it. If you can find s-80's or s-85's that is one great little speaker. When new they sold for $400 each. If you do it right you can get them for $50-$75. Then I would by a sub for $200. You can get an x-sub for now or a nice pro audio sub(only certain ones work well). That would be one killer system and best many around. It takes time because they are hard to find.

Please don't do this. I know you are on a budget but you will end up with completely mismatched speakers and will not get the results you expect. At minimum, you want to have matching left, right and center speakers. Surrounds and subs don't matter as much. Look at what others have suggested.

I just checked Ebay and they have 7 s-80's on their right now. 5 in one audtion alone. If you want state of the art and not spend it, here it is. Match them with the x-sub or the madison ms-18 sub and you are golden, it would be one hell of hometheater.

I have to agree with MK here. The M&K speakers are some of the best in the world.

At that price, you will have a dream system that everyone who hears it will envy.

Best in the world for their price, especially used.

Thanks for the advice guys. What do you all think of the Athena Micra 6 package? I know its HTIB, but like I said I am only going to use these for two years max as my main setup and it looks like I can get the entire package for less than $120 (MSRP $550).
That M&K system would retail for $2000. 5 exact speakers of high quality would give you the best theater experience and you would not need to upgrade at all. That system would be awesome, the athena's wouldn't have a chance.

So you're saying buy the 5 m&k's?
You know allot of people are getting in their x-sls and x-mtm and I can't help but think that there are probably more then a few x-ls's lying around that some people wouldn't mind selling for a reasonable price. If this sounds appealing at all I would post on the classifieds section on there website that your looking for a pair of x-ls's.
However the M&k package is a great idea and you could put the extra money towards a decent sub.

MK you need a bigger hammer!

Thanks again guys. I'm looking into x-ls and M&K right now. I wish I could find some on craigslist so as to avoid shipping but no luck so far.
The reason I mention the M&K is because they were an expensive speaker that has excellent build quality and great audio, especially for theater. You would have to spend around $2000 to better them. 5 matching speakers is the best for theater(from my experience). Those S-80's are amazing, I used to own them. They prefer an amp but a reciever(Integra comes to mine) work well. For around $350 for 5 of these there is no competition. It is hard at $2000(for theater).

I want to get these MK but don't have the money to fork out $350 at once. I'd prefer piecing it together, so I might just get the two speakers on the other auction for now.
That is fine but these speakers are very hard to find. Pairs always sell for more because people seem to need 2. The more you buy at once the bigger the discount. The S-85's match these speakers very well so when you see these and they are cheap, jump on them.
