Need a receiver reco to drive 5.1 4-ohm speakers

Sorry if this is a FAQ, but my HK AVR 7100 died today. I'm looking for a replacement to drive my M&K Sound speakers which are rated at 4-ohms.

The speakers gave my HK fits during high dynamic sound events. I need to find a good receiver that will reliably drive them. Bonus if the receive is around $1000.

Thanks,
Jim

Why not another HK ?

I haven't seen a Harmon Kardan that claims it can reliably drive a 4 ohm load. So, I'm not going down that path unless I see something that makes me feel confident that the amp isn't going to shut itself off a half dozen times during an action movie.

I have been looking at the Outlaw 1070. Seems like it has all of the basic necessities. Does anyone know if it can definitely drive 4 ohms?

Oh, also, the speakers are M&K K-7's in front, K-4's in back.

Thanks,
Jim

I asked HK tech support about 4 ohm speakers and they said they didn't rate them for it, but that it would work fine as long as you didn't push the power too much.

Until I replaced my speakers, it worked fine with the el-cheapo 4 ohm ones I had, FWIW.

If you have a large room you may want to add a separate power amp to get a good SPL.

I'd get a new H/K and add something with 150 or so wpc that likes low loads.

Denon, HK, Sherwood Newcastle, are just a few AVR's that will have no problem driving 4 ohm speakers, unless your speakers are not a stable 4ohm when graphed.

If your AVR7100 can still function as a pre/pro you can connect it up to a separate power amp that will handle 4 ohms better than any receiver anyway. I just happen to have a nice one for sale cheap ($500). Send me a PM if interested.

The HK is dead. It won't power on and when the physical power switch is in the "on" mode, I don't even get the orange light on the soft power switch.

I have checked the power cord and the power strip and everything else looks fine there. Believe me, if I could use the HK as a pre-out, I would gladly buy a decent power amp to drive the M&K.

Anyone have any ideas on why the receiver might be dead?

Otherwise, the HK definitely does NOT like to drive the M&K speakers at any reasonable load. We typically like to watch movies at -30dB to -25dB which is fine for dialog and the like but the second an explosion occurs or a train passes, the receiver shuts off.

I don't tend to believe CSRs when they say that their stuff can drive low-impedance speaks. I now have to see real-world experiences for that.

Hopefully not OT-- I don't have a blown receiver/amp but do have 4 o's that I listen too at around -26 for movies (with a rated 170 per channel rxz9). Separation, detail, and sound stage all improve dramatically around -16 but total volume becomes too high. Would moving to separates or taking the load off my receiver on the mains improve things at lower volume levels? Failing that I ask the same question, is there a receiver that does a better job with 4 o's at lower volume levels?

Are (were) your speakers set to small or large in your receiver? If you take the bottom end load off your mains, I can't imagine why you'd have been overloading your receiver. My Klipsch speakers will drop below 3 Ohms at certain frequencies and I've never had my 7200 shut off. (I'ts for sale by the way..........shameless plug). If your sub is crossed over at 80Hz or so and your mains are set to small, I don't understand why an explosion or train should load the amp.

My receiver was set up properly. The freq response for the K-7's roll off conveniently at 80Hz and this is where I set my receiver to.

I don't really understand why the receiver kept shutting off. It never even ran that hot, but it was CONSISTENTLY shutting off when things got loud in the movie.

The only thing I could deduce was that the auto-shutdown behavior was By Design as noted in the literature to protect the receiver. I can only deduce that the 4-ohm speakers contributed to the problem.

Other than that, I have no idea why this would be a problem. This was an issue, btw, not just with movies but with TV shows and video games. As long as I dialed down the overall volume, the receiver would play on without shutting down.
