they seem to be replacements for the D62 line with 10,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio. They are not better than D92 and it's 15,000:1 DCR.

So it supports deep color? Would the LCD panel be able to look better with the deep color source? What source has that currently?

The high bandwidth audio is not useful for the TV anyway as that's a receiver's job.

VGA input is good to have, but it's not worth that much to me.

I might look into 62U for discount prices.

Smaller in size. 48-45/64" x 30-31/64" x 3-3/4" compared to 49-47/64" x 31-25/32" x 4-59/64". 1" narrower, 1" shorter, 1" thinner

Anyone else notice that the 64U TVs have been pulled from the "U.S. Sharp Aquos Distributor" website and all the previous posts in this thread have been changed to get rid of any reference that it was ever there? Link to pamphlet has also been broken. My guess is this info wasn't supposed to be out.

What's the latest on release of the 64U series.. has anyone heard anything? The last I read was August 21 but I have seem a few internet stores take their Preorder pages down...

Okay... so how is the LC-42D64U different from the LC-42D72U?

Image specifications look to be the same on both. Input ports are slightly different.

The 64U has three HDMI and the 72U has two HDMI and one DVI.
The 64U has two components and the 72U has two components.
The 64U has VGA input.

The retail price of the 64U is $300 less than the 72U, but market price of the 72U is less than the 64U (amazon has the 72U at $100 cheaper than the 64U).

The 72U have units with banding. If the 64U is perfect, then I'm on that.

I'm not sure what Sharp's marketing plan is, but it seems very confusing to have so many similar models. I also believe that with so many models in the market, it makes it harder for retailers to stock the specific model you want. And with a specific model selling less, the prices are kept high.

If i were asked to guess, I would compare the specs of the 64 and the 62 (I assume that the 64 is the 62's replacement, as they are both in the 60's...) and see that there are very few differences. Smaller, more inputs, hopefully HDMI 1.3, but that is about it. I then think to myself, what has Sharp been doing for the last year? Figuring out how to get an extra HDMI input on the side of the panel? Somehow I doubt it. Unless Sharp is about to drop a major bomb on us at CEDIA with some major change in a different model that they have not made any mention of (ignoring their 100,000:1 CR thingie they have going on, thats next year I think) I speculate that they have spent an entire year solely on fixing banding.

So my official speculation: Last year's TV's, minus 1" on each dimension, plus 1 HDMI on the side, and NO BANDING (or very minimal).

If you're comparing the 42" 62U to the 64U, then the 64U is much better. The 42D62U has a native CR of 1200:1 while the 42D64U is 2000:1. I thought the 72U was the replacement for the 62U but then comes along the similar spec 64U.

nope i am comparing the 46 and 52.
The 42's had a different panel (i think) than the bigger 62's and therefore different specs.

Looks like the 64U models have 15 W speakers instead of 10 W. That's pretty unusual in a flat panel, isn't it? Seems like a nice bonus.

I'm pumped for the 42D64U. It doesn't look like a major upgrade from the 72U, but there are a lot of nice little touches like those speakers. And hopefully it'll be a bit more mainstream than the 72U, considering this forum is just about the only place on the internet where you can find info on the 72U, and in Canada it's only carried by one retail chain.

But never mind all that... if they fix the banding it'll be worth it for that alone. Although after waiting nearly a year for that fix it does seem like a bad idea to get one's hopes up...

I believe the 64U series weighs less than previous displays, too. Given they're probably 120Hz (have not seen 120Hz specified anywhere...), then it seems like these sets should be an improvement over previous generations.

Hopefully the early adapters will give us a review on their new TVs as soon as they're available. It will interesting to find out if the banding problem as been solved.

* LC-52D64U will be available in August for a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) pricing $3,799.99.
