Wii 480p setting?

I just bought my wife a Wii yesterday and we hooked it up and played a little. in the initial settings it let me set it to 16:9, but I didn't see any options for 480p. Is it similar to the GC in that for each individual game, you have to hold certain buttons to get it into 480p mode? 2nd question is do all Wii games support 480p?

16x9 would be 480p on the Wii as it only does that. I believe all Wii games are 480p.

I can't wait to get mine tomorrow.

Progressive Scan only becomes available as an option if you have a component cable.

there's no secret key combo, either- you set it to progressive in the display section of the wii's options.

You need to buy a set of component cables, and then switch it from 480i to 480p in the Wii Menu. Not every Wii game is 480p, or even 16x9. I think that there is a sticky on this board that has a list of the games and what they support. If not you can find it on the net somewhere. Hope this helps.

Nope. 16:9 and 480p are two seperate settings in the Wii settings menu. This means you can have 480i 16:9, and 480p 4:3, as well as the more common 480i 4:3 and 480p 16:9.

Concerning the original poster: Yeah, in the initial setup it doesn't ask you a resolution question (if memory serves, that was 9 months ago), but the the settings menu there is a setting to choose between 480i and 480p. The 480p option is greyed out if you are running on composite or s-video cables.

Great thanks guys. Yes I bought the component cables so no problems running 480p. Guess I'll just have to jump into the screen settings and set it to 480p. thanks!

So other than the list on this forum, is there any way of telling if a game supports 480p? I looked on the back of the boxes of all the games we have (super paper mario, big brain academy, mario party 8, wii play) and none of them list anything on the back. So if I put in a game and want to find out if it is playing in 480p or not, how do I tell?

The list here is pretty much the only way to tell if a game is 480p, before you buy it. The Wii will pretty much never tell you what resolution it is spitting out, so it depends on your TV to tell you what resolution is is getting. I wish they had kept the same logos from the back of Gamecube games for the Wii...
