Downgraded because everytime unit was turned off and lost electric it gave me EPROM ERROR. Now with 1.05 installed that issue is gone with the exception of this volume setting.

I have done reset each time and still no change.

Any ideas ?

No volume problem however everytime unit lost power, unplugged it would result in eprom error.

Is there any newer firmware?

Wow, that sounds like failing flash memory. I think you'd better invest in a decent UPS to prevent that (I would think that replacing the memory would be quite expensive/difficult)

As far as I know, 1.09 is the latest firmware for 905. As advised by local Onkyo technical person, E2PROM can only be fixed by replacing an IC card.
Have you tried 1.08 and updated the latest DSP?

Yes same results.
The only firmware that works sorta is 1.05 with the exception of volume issues.

Check your default volume setting, change to absolute should fix it.

I've had the TX-NR905 for about 3 years and it's worked fine, for the most part. However, a few months ago it started just turning off whenever a movie (blu-ray, .mp4, .avi) got loud. For instance, it turned off about 10 times while I was watching The Avengers - all at points where the sound culminated and there was a lot of activity. Basically, it's turning off at the points when I assume it's pulling a lot of power. Turning the volume down seems to help, but not eliminate the problem. It also defeats the purpose of having a great home theater system.

I play my movies from a PS3 and all my electronics are plugged into a Belkin surge protector - the same one they've always been plugged into. Any ideas why this is happening? All the power connections seem secure.
A thought. It might be overheating and shutting down due to that. I am unshure if the 905 has a fan or not (I have a 805), and possibly the fins on the fan is blocked by dust? Or are the interior cooler fins covered in dust?
Another possible solution is that you may have to increase ventilation. It needs a few centimeters of space to breath and access to free air. Does it feel hot?
The receiver does heat up, but it immediately turns on again and is fine until the next action sequence or whatever. This makes me think the heat isn't the main problem and that it has something to do with the power. I've also used the receiver in the same physical location for several years, so it's not any hotter now than it was when it wasn't doing this.

Hi, all! I need some help with my 905. I've owned the unit since the day they came out, and I love it. It's been a trooper for several years now, but this evening something odd happened. My wife and I finally had time to sit down and watch a movie, but after turning the unit on there was no video output (I use the HDMI MAIN connected to a projector). There was also only intermittent sound... it would pop up "dolby digital" on the 905's display, and sound would be coming out of the speakers. Then the sound would clip and the output designation would disappear. Then the designation would come on a few seconds later, there would be sound, and then it would go off again. During the whole time there was no video. I checked all of my settings, the projector was on and indicating HDMI as the input source, etc. Nothing else in my setup has changed. I watched the TV yesterday, and since, there have been no storms, etc., and I have the unit hooked to a dedicated power source with battery backup, surge suppression and a line conditioner. I also tried switching the "monitor" setting to HDMI SUB, but the same thing was occurring.

Any thoughts and/or ideas? I'll be happy to give anything a shot. Thanks so much!

Never mind... I performed a factory reset and it's working again. Odd... Now to go back and redo all of my settings....

I just posted this in the Integra DTR-8.8 forum, but thought here could also help.

Has anybody had the HDMI go out on their 8.8 (905)? I got home today with my son telling me that the TV does not work.

On simple check out, all HDMI sources show "No-Signal" on the 8.8 (905) when selected. Analog 2-channel music sources still play. I plugged the xbox into Aux 2 and only sound played, no video to TV. I tried going to the 8.8 setup menu and did not get anything on the display. TV display connected via HDMI.

My first thought is HDMI board in 8.8 (905) (if there is such a thing) went bad. This has been a great unit the last 5 years.

I do not have time this evening but here are my plans,

1. Connect source directly to TV and check video.
2. Connect 8.8 (905) to TV via analog path and check video. If I get video i can check setup to see if something went wrong there.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks, Scott

Have you tried resetting the unit? I don't quite remember the sequence and buttons, but I do recall there was a way of doing it.

I got lucky, I unplugged the unit for a few hours this evening. When I plugged back in, all was working perfectly. All setting still intact.

Yes. S-video & composite to HDMI works too.

I have a quick question about the back of the 905. What does it mean when you see a light on next to the power cord outlet?

Also, is the connection of the power cord on the back of the 905 always feel loose? It just does not seems like a tight fit on the back of the 905. It is kind of wobbly.
First of all, apologies if this has been discussed before. I have done a search but can't find my specific problem.

I have just noticed a recent problem when playing a Dolby Digital source.

Regardless of the component from which the source originates, the receiver makes and audible clicking or chirping noise through the speakers. I have a Home Theatre PC which outputs Dolby Digital when playing HDTV channels and a Sony BluRay player which outputs Dolby Digital when playing DVDs encoded with such. With both components the fault is the same. Chirping or clicking every few minutes, sometimes 4 or 5 clicks in rapid succession.

I stress this is not relay clicks mentioned earlier in this thread, but sound through the speakers, sometimes quite loud. I tried changing the output to some of the other options such as THX etc but the problem remained. If I went into the audio options on the DVD itself and changed the soundtrack to 2 ch the problem disappeared. So it seems to me to be a possible codec problem as the 905 decodes the input but is only specific to a received Dolby Digital signal.

Has anyone else had this problem, and if so could it be fixed?

I read elsewhere that there has been a reoccurrence of the DTS HD Master bomb which was evident years ago but has reared it's head again following the release of the latest Star Wars movie on BluRay. This necessitated a new firmware update which has not been released publicly, but one must contact Onkyo directly for them to post it out to you on a CD. Maybe this will fix my clicking problem as well. Does anyone have access to a copy of it?

Is there anything anyone would recommend to possibly fix it?

I haven't had a chance to do a reset as I'm currently away from home for a few days but thought I might check the font of knowledge on here while sitting in a hotel room before I spent hours fault finding in the wrong direction when I get home.

Thanks in advance.

Hi all, sorry for my poor english.
I got a big problem with the E2PROM ERROR after updating my device with firmware 1.08.
I read in this forum that a downgrade to 1.05 can solve this problem.
Does anyone has this firmware for me?
All the links I found are dead.

Is anyone using a 3D Blu-Ray player with dual-HDMI outputs with the NR905? I would like to go this route with a Panasonic BDT500, Oppo BDP-93/103, or similar. I'm worried, though, that it may not work correctly since the NR905 will not output source audio without a display device connection. If I connect the player directly to a display via the main HDMI output, and to the NR905 via the secondary HDMI output for HDMI 1.3 audio, but do not have the NR905 connected to a display is there any chance it will play the audio? I would like to know before I invest in a dual-HDMI 3D Blu-Ray player.

Thanks in advance!

I tried everything possible in order to get this to work with a Samsung BD-D6700 Blu-Ray player that has two HDMI outputs, but I never got it to work.
I wonder if an active HDMI splitter along with a secondary display (like a small computer monitor with HDMI input) would insure the NR905 always sees a display and, in turn, outputs audio from the secondary HDMI output of the BR player? This would require an additional switch as well, but the dual-output BR player would for me regardless (going over a long run to a projector).

That said, even if it would work, it seems like a lot more effort than losless audio is worth. Maybe a player with 7.1 analog out is a better solution...? Or just sticking with re-encoded DD+ or DTS over optical/coax is more pragmatic...?

I have a panasonic DMP-BDT310 hooked up with second output to 905 for audio and primary directly to display for video/3D. I don't recall my exact settings, but I set it up exactly as directed and it worked first try.

Hi, all. I purchased my 905 as soon as they were released back in late 2007. I'm doing some general "updating" on components in my system, and I seem to remember that there were a few firmware updates for the 905. However, when I go to Onkyo USA and pull up the 905, it says there are no updates for this product. Have they just ceased to support it since it's an older model, or were there actually no updates for it? If there were updates, any idea where I can find them? Thanks!

PROBLEM: FOLKS WITHOUT TEST EQUIPMENT AND/OR EXPERTISE POST NONE SENSE AS TRUTH

My Onkyo TX-NR905 will work just fine as a pre-amp. You should realize that you probably have speaker levels set waaay too low in the receiver's set up menu (or have an actual equipment issue which I doubt). Pure audio doesn't even bypass speaker level, so this would be present on all modes.

I know because I actually tested the pre-amp using a square wave sent via ROOM EQ over HDMI. I then used a trueRMS volt meter (Fluke 189) to measure the RMS voltage value of the 50% duty cycle square wave. Yes, if you have speaker level way low in the set up, you get a way low result (I tested this). If you set speaker level closer to 0dB you'll find that the pre-amp has plenty of range, all the way to 5-6 volts on mine as you vary volume level! Also, if you still have speakers connected to the Onkyo, the test not work. You actually have to disconnect speakers.

I would have bought an amp a long time ago, but your post had me scared and confused. Admittedly my amp hasn't arrived yet, but I believe a simple test like what I did debunks this crazy theory of yours. Thanks to google your post comes up whenever anyone searches pre-amp and TX-NR905; who knows how many folks this has confused. Worse yet, you felt the need to repost incorrect information on several different websites.

I suspect this 1V value Onkyo gave you is greatly dependent on whatever signal they used to get the 1V value. Did they input 200mV 1kHz sine wave? Did you ask? Who knows or cares if a real world test over HDMI disproves your theory.

PROBLEM: ONKYO TX-NR905 PREAMP OUTPUT VOLTAGE TOO LOW FOR OUTBOARD AMPLIFIER

My Onkyo 905 used as Preamp into my new Earthquake Cinenova Grande 7 channel amplifier does NOT make movies loud, indeed LESS loud than the internal 905 amps did (!)

It is clear that the output voltage of the 905 Preamp Outs is too low for the input sensitivity of the Cinenova. Earthquake's tech "Fadi" says their amp is designed to Industry Standard 1.9V max input needed, though "Industry Standard" is, as Jack Sparrow the Pirate says, 'More a Guideline than a Law'.

I could not find the rated output of the Onkyo 905 preamp, but some other Onkyo was rated to only 1V, which clearly wouldn't be enough based both on the VOLTAGE, and now in my EXPERIENCE.

The speaker volume output goes up until the Onkyo is at around 81%, after that it barely goes up if at all, seems to have maxxed out the curve of [volume setting vs preamp output].

--Does anyone KNOW the preamp out rating of our 905's?

--Can the 905 preamp out voltage be INCREASED by some potentiometers inside it etc? (YES I have maxxed out the "Cable/Sat Intellivolume" at +12dB in the 905 menus. I am using DirecTV satellite into the 905).

--I am trying to solve the problem on BOTH ends, I hate to have to send this 140 pound amp BACK to Earthquake for adjustment...

--IMHO Onkyo (and maybe Denon too, this was reported by a Denon owner who ended up SELLING his Denon and the Cinenova when it wouldn't go loud) have inadequate preamp out voltage CAPABILITY.

I got the Cinenova in order to NOT have to worry about amp clipping or distortion at loud volumes into my new PSB Synchrony 1 seven speaker home theater setup. I use an old reliable Velodyne ULD18II subwoofer and am directing an appropriate amount of the low freq's to it.

The 905 sounded good, but at high volumes I could detect some hardening/edged sound suggestive of amps-in-mild-distress; rather than beat it, I elected to get a bigger amp. Since the Cinenova is rated at 300Wpc 8 ohms, 600Wpc 4 ohms and my speakers are a nominal 4ohm load, the (well over) doubling of wattage should give me at least 3-5dB more headroom and without clipping worries. I have shut down the 905 (and got it to give very nasty strange popping-noises-of-distress) at high volumes with it set to "6 Ohm" so put it on "4 Ohm" but as tests show, this seems to limit output wattage to around 55-60 Wpc...NOT the ideal way for me to run my new home theater.

I have been impressed with the technical KNOWLEDGE of some people on here, and thanks in advance...

JT

ps the Onkyo definitely does strange things by removing significant bass to the sub vs. my old Yamaha RXV1050 receiver, especially/most notable in Direct or Pure Audio mode...separate issue

-->>EDIT/UPDATE: Onkyo Technical Support says preamp is rated up to 1V output only, and is not adjustable! This makes it a poor match for the Cinenova and likely other amplifiers as well. I am working with Earthquake to see what can be done to adjust the input sensitivity of the Cinenova amp to best match the output (dis)ability of the Onkyo 905...

I found a source listing some common preamp maximum output capabilities:

"- some receivers' preouts (~1V RCA)

- some highend, megabuck 2 channel preamps (30+ V XLR)

- Parasound Halo C1/C2 prepros (8V RCA, 16V XLR)

- Aragon 2 channel preamps (8V RCA, 16V XLR)

- Aragon Soundstage & Stage One prepros (7V RCA, 14V XLR)

So, yes, the 1V preamp output of our Onkyo 905's is substandard and suboptimal, and I am suffering for it.

-->>EDIT/UPDATE #2 10/25/2008: "Fadi" at Earthquake is being VERY helpful, and understands the problem (he is NOT the usual know-nothing "Janitor" one gets at company help lines!).

He is sending me a set of 7 resistors, and has Emailed me very high quality ACTUAL pictures showing how to take the unit apart, which resistor to change, and how to do it. I am good with soldering and moderate electronic work so I am the "test subject" for this. I will be making the resistor change to increase the amp's input sensitivity. I will be using a Radio Shack dB soundmeter and checking the exact dB difference at some reference volume settings on my 905, to document the difference in my setup.

HIGH PRAISE to Earthquake for their Customer Service and technical help so far!!! Onkyo's Janitor was at least able to get me the preamp out voltage max and no help on adjustment...LOL

-->>EDIT/UPDATE #3 12/28/2008: I swapped out the 7 resistors Earthquake sent. The speakers now play 5 to 5.5dB louder using the exact same Onkyo white noise test for the front 3 speakers, all else exactly the same. Readings via usual Radio Shack sound level meter, at about 13feet/couch listening position. I am now able to drive the Cinenova amp into light clipping on some things. IMO the preamp should be able to overdrive the amp into hard clip, to assure the preamp has the RANGE to fully utilize the amp on all sources/materials...and assure you are getting your (big) money's worth out of the amp, getting all the Watts it can properly produce. Fadi at Earthquake said they would likely incorporate this mod in future production runs, as it clearly will happen with ALL Onkyo products which ALL seem to have only 1V output max on preamps; some Denons at least are the same. I suggested a switchable input sensitivity as some amps have.

I still notice a rare harsh crackle/clip sound from the Onkyo at high volume bursts/levels at times. It happened well before the Cinenova upgrade, the Cinenova was certainly not clipping; so something, whether the preamp, or some processing glitching, is causing that. It doesn't happen except with Onkyo pumped up around 75-85% volume, and I don't think a processing glitch would do this, unless it involved the electronic preamp volume control.

Yes it will output audio with no display connection. Set the HDMI Out setting to no.
