While I'm waiting for it to ship, I need to do some reading up on how to properly calibrate it...guess I need to get an spl meter and see if I can I can run REW on my laptop. ...I basically just sat the BIC in a corner and let Audessey determine the level...want to set the Empire up properly though.

What receiver do you have? More so what level of audyssey support do you have? If you have multeq xt, then i would try that first before i worried about some other eq. A lot of users are having good results with audyssey: i being one of them. Best of luck to you it should be a huge upgrade. Let us know.

Sorry for the intrusion but I was hoping someone could help out a fellow member. Are there any reliable, trustworthy sites that one can peruse for benchmarking subwoofers ?

As we all know, sub specs can be taken with a grain of salt unless independently measured, preferably using ground plane measurements.

Has anyone taken up the mantle after Illka departed HTS ? Anyone that uses consistent testing methodologies ? Please let me know.

Thank you and sorry again for the intrusion.

Regards,

The wife has chronic severe pain caused by a bad heart due to lack of oxygen getting to her organs. 6 years ago on Valintines weekend, she fell and broke her hip. Then on the following Mothers Day, had one massive heart attack (I had called the MT’s for her chest pain and they zapped her on the bedroom floor) and she had 4 stints put in. She has an enlarged heart and it is functioning at 10%. Due to this, she gets congestive heart failure real easy (5 times so far) and her body can’t get enough oxygen via blood. She is on oxygen and Warfin all the time and gets tired real easy. So on top of that, she does home daycare for 10 kids with an assistant and since all this has taken place I have been doing it all. Cooking, taking care of kids, etc. We do have a full time assistant teacher and that helps with my 14 hour work day. We can give all of this up but she doesn’t want to as she says that this is what is keeping her going. She is around for the kids and that is about it now days. We do have grandchildern and one is a doctor.

I retired when I was 57 from the Seattle Times newspaper and am now 67. So with SS and pensions coming in, we can live quite comfortable even with her health. I was in management so I got a good pension from the paper. Plus VA retire payments (wounded in Nam in ’65. Marine platoon Sgt.).

I'm not crying a river over all of this as life has been good for both of us. Others have it alot worse and I am thankful that I do live in the United States. For all of our faults, this country is still the best place to live in the world. So HT is my hobby and that is what is keeping me going!

Thanx, Bill

Hello Bill- I'm sorry to hear your wife is not well- I hope her condition improves without delay. I'm anxious to see what you think about dual Empires-I've got a pair in our basement/theater that's an open 6900 cu.ft. and they sound and feel incredible. I'm using my 8033 and really love the results. Coupled with your Conquest, I think you're going to have something really special. Again. best wishes for your wife and thanks for your service.

Unfortunately I didn't realize there were different versions of audessey when I bought my receiver and I purchased the Onkyo RC160 which only has 2eq so it sets the sub level but doesn't eq it.

Just bought an spl meter this morning so will play around with it and REW this afternoon and see how the BIC looks....if it looks really bad, I'll probably go ahead and buy an eq so I'll have it and know how to use it when the Empire gets here. If I do end up getting the eq, I'm thinking I'll try the Behringer 202; seems like the least expensive option.

The Behringer UCA-202 is a USB Audio Input/Output Adapter, it doesn't have EQ abilities. The DSP1124 or FBQ2496 are what most are using with REW, cheapest options with the most flexability. If you decide on the 2496 shoot me a pm. I've got one with adapters that I'm no longer using.

Just as a follow up to my problem with the LFE RCA jack on my Valor.

Chad will be sending me a replacement amp - no cost.

I should be back up and running soon with both LFE and Line Level inputs.

Thumbs up for good customer support from Epik!!

Regards,

I lost my book marks in the great hard drive crash(es) of 2009. At avtalk.co.uk there are several independently tested subwoofers, with helpful graphics and an explanation if you need it. Just scroll down the sub tests, then see if they've got a sub you're interested in. These were a while ago, and are becoming out of date. BUt they include frequency response, power compression, distortion and other useful info. Check out how the SVS Ultra 13 tested out (they run it in every possible configuration). It is, to my eyes, quite awesome.

Also Ilkka (I think that's the spelling) did a lot of independent tests and I think they're on home theater shack now, but would not swear to it. You can google Illka (or else Illka) subwoofer and you'll get there pretty easily.

There also is another compendium of tests by/for one of the magazine/sites, but as I sit here I can't remember the name of the guy who did them, or the site to find them.

Bottom line is there is not a lot that's pulled together and easy to sort, and what there is seems not to be updated, so as the months pass the models tested go out of production . . . still somewhat enlightening, though.

The guy's name is Tom Nousaine and he has tested hundreds of subwoofers, first in his ~2,500 cubic foot room and for the last 5 years or more in his 7,500 cubic foot room. The most interesting recent addition is the Epik Conquest. Here is the link to the tests:

That's it!. Why I could not pull his name out of my head I'll never know. A handy link to have.

Thanks.

We were merely trying to figure out what "Traitors" what supposed to mean. Noting your location, I simply thought it was a language thing. Nothing worse than someone asking for help and being an obnoxious turd when people don't get a chance to reply immediately.

Now that you've confirmed it was indeed an infantile tizzy-fit, it makes me wonder how in the heck you managed to get the helpful responses you got.

Spyboy and JHAz, you guys deserve a big thank you.

Any Empire owners find that their Empire(s) sub sounds "best" when one of the 15" driver is firing into the direction of the listening position (LP)? I've noticed this more so for music.

When did you order? I ordered one recently too...curious how long your wait was. Did you get any notification other than an email showing it had shipped? This wait's tougher than I thought it would be! What are you upgrading from?

Please post feedback when you get them hooked up. I emailed Epik yesterday, and heard from them today. I am still a bit down their list and they can't give me a date, I ordered the Duals 4/25. They are waiting for some components to come in I don't expect to see mine till the end of the month.
