I currently have a Dynasty that I purchased a couple of years ago from another forum member that is being utilized in my primary setup. I recently moved and now that primary setup happens to be in the living room. Based on room configuration, the Dynasty is placed nearfield, serving as an "end table" between a loveseat and couch arranged in L-configuration. I have always been intrigued with the Empire since its release and I'm considering replacing the Dynasty with it for this setup. I'm curious to know if anyone has any direct experience with the two to compare/contrast. I realize we're dealing with a large ported box versus a smaller, sealed, two-driver design. I'm wondering the benefits I might gain versus lose by swapping out. Home theater is primary use, but music listening would probably increase if a noticable difference was had. I've never been overly thrilled with the "musicality" of the Dynasty. Never seemed to provide much of the mid-bass slam that many forum members describe.
I also happen to have a Dragon that is currently sitting unused after the move. My plans were to utilize it in an extra (very small) bedroom that will hopefully be used for movies/games some day. If I were to pull the trigger on the Empire, I'd probably end up selling the Dynasty or Dragon, although which one, I'm not sure.
Any thoughts, especially those with direct experience would be greatly appreciated.
This is so very subjective that it will be hard for anyone to give you a definitive answer, so unless you hear them yourself side by side, any 3rd party opinion is really irrelevant. Seeing you are local, have you considered calling Chad to see if he will give you an audition? Alternatively, they do have a 30 day refund policy to allow you to trial a sub in your home to see if you like it. However, you do have to pay for shipping, so this is really only a benefit for us local customers.
Anyway, if you are looking for -mid-bass punch - the Empires will outperform in that arena, and will be more musical. That goes without saying. However, it falls off quickly at 20Hz, so you don't get that deep ground shaking rumble which gives the depth for HT. The Dynasty will slaughter the Empire below 20Hz.
So it really comes down to what you want? Chad provided the plugs for my Phoenix where I can plug the ports if I want to tighten things up for more critical musical material. It does help a little, but I typically just leave it alone. I have full range fronts, so I just blend the sub to fill and I'm good with that.
My thinking would be to get an Empire, and give it a whirl. Test it side by side against the Dynasty and see which you like better. Return it if you don't like it, or sell the Dynasty. The Dynasty would probably sell pretty quickly if you prefer the Empire. There seems to be a healthy demand for the 18"s that are no longer in production, if that tells you anything.
