No problem KBMAN. Keep us posted...I can't wait to hear your impressions of the Tower
post #4172 of 19461
Well, I will soon (not too soon I guess) be in the fold. Just ordered a Tower to go with my new Ascend 340s. I was debating about just going strait to two subs, but think I will wait and see how one fills out my 4900 cf space first.

I was really torn between the Tower and the PC-Ultra. I was thinking my wife would prefer the Ultra (if we had to get a sub at all), but she didn't like the look of the tall tube and preferred the box. So, you WAF may vary.

The waiting is the hardest part. Anyone know what the current wait time is? It sounded like about one month.

P.S. lalakersfan, are you going to the game on the 28th? I'm a displaced Portland fan and can't wait to see that one. It may be a classic.

I think you'll be very happy with the Tower. The wait is looking like it's in the 4-6 week range, so I wish you the best in this very difficult period of time.

As for my screen name, while I am a Lakers fan, I'm not nearly as die hard as my name would suggest. I've used this name ever since 7th or 8th grade - the "34" was Shaq's number way back then - so while I've certainly followed the Lakers all these years (Lakers/Blazer was pretty intense back then!), I'm not a season ticket holder or anything. In fact, I am rarely able to make it to any games at all (just a poor college student here who spends his discretionary money on A/V ). That said, I do like to watch games when I can. I'll make sure to try and catch the game on the 28th

Did you ever speak with someone or did you just order on line? I'm still narrowing down my sub choice and had some questions for them. Left VM and email and haven't heard back yet.

Great reviews of the sub just worried about CS.

Kinda leery of just placing an order without speaking to someone.

Don't worry about it...if you order from Epik, their customer service is hit or miss....but don't worry about their REPUTATION. I had my doubts when I didn't get emails or phone calls, but sometimes I WOULD. I know thats not that "warm and fuzzy feeling", but all in all, you are getting a great product. I haven't gotten my sub yet (two more days!), but have you looked thru this whole thread and saw a negative response about QC and SQ??? The online store is kinda wierd, but it's totally safe......just thought you'd know

Chad did leave me a message, but I never did get hold of him. In the end I was choosing between the Ultra-13, Castle and Tower. My space is somewhat large (4900 cf), so I might want to order a balancing sub in the future, but didn't want to start with a sub that would require me to do so. My wife didn't like the form of the Ultra. The Castle and Tower both fit in my predicted space, and I have a balancing space that would fit a second if needed.

I also felt like I was on information overload having read nearly every post ever made on the Castle and Tower. I didn't really have any more questions for Chad.

If the wife liked the Ultra, I would have probably gone that route because SVS was great about responding to questions, and I would have more options in locating the Ultras because of the smaller footprint.

I'm with you there....my brain is going to explode. This is got to be the most difficult decision I've made for my HT thus far.

Too many subs are too "close" to each other as far as performance (at least what I've read)

I had my mind made with the SVS as well until I found this site!

Haven't looked at the entire thread but close!

You are right though....nothing negative that I've read.

Thanks for the response....I realize they are a small company and I'm patient about hearing back from them.

I almost finished the checkout....then backed out....guess I'll wait a bit longer.

This is funny,
last week I probably called Epik about once every 10 minutes one day until Chad picked up. They are very busy people, and as you can see, I'm not

i always order from a person
dont feel comfortable the other way
if you have any questions ask them here. thats what were here for
i am the proud owner of 2 epik towers.
i have them in a 2400 cu ft room. they have yet to break a sweat, but i have tried.

I sent Epik an email Sunday evening with room layout and what I wanted from next sub. Still nothing back and I WAS interested in a Conquest.

I am done with them, their competitor responded to the same email sent at the same time and same information as I sent Epik, comp sent reply 12hours and 7 minutes later.

I wish I could recall my email to Epik as my new sub was shipped yesterday and arrived for delivery today.

Thats the way it is suppose to work, oh yeah never called Comp once.

I expect better CS when spending that kind of money but hey Epik must not need my business. In my case CS was the deal breaker. I would have waited for build but screw waiting for them wanting my business.

Good luck

Some are willing to deal with the hassle of doing business with a company like Epik. I was one of them, and ended up very happy with the product that I own. For pure visceral output Epik is unmatched in its price point. For accuracy they are near the top of the game for the money as well. For me it came down to pure performance. I had to turn a blind eye to the customer service, and I walked away a satisfied customer.

Sorry your experience was poor, but I don't think anyone can expect anything else from Epik at this stage in the game.

Yeah, I got replies to my e-mails but it took a long time - at least a week or longer. I also had to call quite a few times before I was lucky and caught Karen, who was fortunately able to get Chad for me. I agree that at some point Epik will need to get on the ball with CS. Right now the value of the products alone is keeping them swamped, but at some point not having dedicated, responsive CS will definitely hurt them quite a bit. Sorry to hear about your bad luck with them. Good thing there are so many great ID companies out there that have excellent CS. Out of curiosity, what company did you go with and what sub(s)?
I'm reconsidering my order. My plan was to order a Tower and if that was enough for my 4900 cv ported room, then I'd be done about about $1265. But, I would have the option of going with another Tower if I needed more punch and/or more even FR in my room. Everyone agrees two are better than one. (2xTower = $2530, no discount for two).

Since I still haven't really heard from Epik, I thought I would give SVS a call, just out of curiosity. They responded immediately (one hour) and will discount a single Ultra, but will really discount two Ultras to make the price almost equivalent with two Towers. And, I can have them now.

Two Towers would no doubt take the paint off the walls, but two Ultras for the same price would likely do the same, but with better articulation.

I'm feeling week. Help me.

If I had the option of 2 Ultras which are slightly smaller than Towers for about the same price as 2 Towers I would have gone with SVS especially considering they are in stock for immediate delivery. Maybe you lose 1 or 2 db, but you won't notice it. You MIGHT notice the increased articulation which some seem to notice on music. You might also not want to use both subs during music playback so your choice becomes even tougher.

I think for me knowing what I know now about SVS vs. Epik customer service even though I own an Epik it would be a no brainer to go with SVS for a similar price and slightly nicer looking product with better support long term.

Get the 2 Ultras. No reason to wait around for Towers to ship when you can have nearly the same product from SVS immediately.

My 2 cents. From an Epik owner too

I would choose the SVS CS and company stability...
The ultra looks to be an excellent product.

Trying to decide on which Epik Sub I should purchase if I decide on Epik.

My room is 12.5W x 23.5L x 9H...dedicated HT. 85% HT

Leaning toward the Caliber....dunno though. That Castle looks like it could be a beast.

Conquest is the only one completely out of the equation.

What do you guys think?
Since I do still have a Tower on order, I did ask Chad (the Epik version) about the differences between the Tower and Castle above 35Hz. He clearly stated that even though the Tower gets a 3 dB advantage down low, the rest of the response is exactly the same as the Castle--so you are not robbing Peter to pay Paul. The larger cabinet just provides more down low.

While telling me a story about his experience, it sounded like he has two Towers in his own theater, so take that for what it is worth.
I was thinking Caliber at first since I was thinking about going with duals. I might change that to just one Tower.
Does anyone in the Atlanta GA area have one of the Epik subs and wouldn't mind showing it off?

Sure would make my decision much easier.

Figured it doesn't hurt to ask!
I've decided to be patient and wait for my Tower.

After further investigation, I realized there was a significant performance difference between the PC13-ultra and PB13-ultra:

Quote:

The PB13U has more internal enclosure volume and also has a deeper tuning point. As such, it a slightly stronger overall performer, and has a few Hz deeper extension and more clean output capability at the very deepest frequencies. . . .

Ed Mullen
SV Sound, LLC

So, given that it is a lower performer than the PB13 tested by Craigsub, it takes it ever further below the Tower/Castle. The price point/size of the PB13 makes it less attractive. I will just have to wait.
Good grief....try collecting custom swords....waits of over a year!

4-5 weeks?? Child's play...

FWIW, before I ordered my Tower, I called SVS and asked them if they would come down on their price for the PB13-Ultra and they wouldn't budge. I had to wait 6 weeks for my Tower(which sucked) but now I could care less. Very Very happy with my Tower.
