Hot Fuzz is the new "KING" *PIX* + Reviews

A week has passed and I have seen this movie four times in my HT. And everytime I look at it I can't help and think to myself this HD DVD might be the best HD PQ out there alongside King Kong. There is no obvious artifacting to be observed. Scene after scene there is no degradation it just pops out in detail. The PQ is consistently sharp througout including dark scenes. During that time grain is minimal and picture detail is preserved.

I personally prefer the look of Hot Fuzz over King Kong. The more natural colors and contrast is more pleasing to me than the digitally altered look of King Kong.

BTW the movie is actually pretty good Some gags and jokes are so clever that you have to watch it again to appreciate it. One hint I can give you is watch Shaun Of the Dead first

This first set of screenshots exemplifies how much of an upgrade the PQ is over the DVD. All the logos and signs are readable on HD DVD

Wow

Incredible detail compared to the DVD. I can't believe people still can't see the difference. Its like night a day.

Saw it in the theater and loved it to death (but since I met Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright in Pittsburgh I may be a tad biased ). Buying it was a no brainer for me.

I was in utter shock at the detail and clarity of this beautiful transfer. Perfection. And roughly 18 FREAKIN HOURS OF EXTRAS?!?!?!?! This is the HD disc upon which all others should be judged. I had friends over to watch and they were dumbfounded at the amazing PQ and AQ. Now they understand why I "Started buying and rebuying all these movies in a new format". It drove two of my buddies to go out and score 360 add-ons the following morning

I know many people hate that it's a combo, but I'm thankful it is. That way you can flip sides and have immediate proof to show non HD believers why after you go HD it's hard to go back to SD. Ever. It's like watching a film with vaseline smeared on the lenses of your glasses.

I honestly think it is the BEST PQ disc of any format out there.
It is a great looking disk. And more LFE per second than anything I could imagine, outside of maybe a rap video. lol
post #9 of 134
Wow, that is amazing. The DVD looks absolutely horrible in comparison.
That is amazing! I really have a hard time believing thats the dvd version lol. I think it's funny that we were thinking DVD had good PQ and man does HD-DVD just blow it away.

This is a great way to show anyone how bad DVD really is and they should buy a HD format right away!
nice comparison shots
I'll definitely use these when someone wants to see the difference

thanks

Watched it last night. I would have to agree it is the most impressive HD DVD i have seen thus far. I caught myself saying "wow that looks incredible" many times.

Look at the detail of Simon Pegg's crooked teeth on the before (DVD) and after (HD-DVD) pictures in the second posting!

I liked this movie in the theater, but wasn't planning on buying it. With the top image quality I will be buying it now though. But I am going to register one complaint. These are high definition formats. As we go forward extras should be in HD for new movies. HD cameras are getting really inexpensive and I don't see much reason for studios to shoot extras in low resolution going forward. Even a consumer level HD camera can blow away SD image quality.

Universal should be commended for this disc from what I've read and see here, but I don't think we should settle for them only doing SD extras on HD formats. At least not for new movies where there is a choice. I will be pretty disappointed if they are still sticking us with mostly SD extras for new movies a couple of years from now. And that goes for both formats or the winner if there is one.

Just look at the first picture in the original post. Should extras look like the left side on HD formats, or more like the right side?

I have to agree. Out of my 68 HD and BR discs combined, THIS is the new reference title.

Good work! I think we all need to make sure we tell as many people, and show as many people how amazing HD DVD can be. Word of mouth can make or break a format and if everyone got two other people to pick up a stand alone or add-on, it would be HUGE!

Although I despise most extras and promote the superbit approach, can you imagine how terrible the transfer would have been if all those extras were in HD? It would need to be a seven disk set!

Watched it twice since buying it on Thursday. Watched it last night with my wife and two kids and they were blown away. This is definitely the top dog in hi def, bar none.
Wow, that's an amazing difference between the stadard and Hi def version. I was just going to rent this one from netflix, but I think I will blind buy it now.
Aargh. Can't wait to receive this :-)

Just to give the DVD side credit: Isn't it a single layer?
Such a great movie, I will buy it one day. I did get it from Netflix though. The HD DVD is incredible. I honestly think this is a benchmark release. Great movie, amazing transfer, tons of extra content on one disc. Now if only it wasn't a combo and was priced lower, it'd be even better.
this movie was great. Pre-ordered it as a blind buy after hearing how good it is. When i watched it i was just blown away. Amazing detail and PQ and just a great funny movie.

I liked it soo much i went right out and bought Shaun of the Dead to compliment it. That movie is great too.

I saw the review on Highdefdigest and was like meh.... I'll wait, but from all the talk of the PQ being so good and now seeing these screenshots....I'm leaving the house to go buy.

Well I watched it again and a quick peek at Apocalypto (the best BD PQ) and King Kong (Reference). All are excellent examples of what great high quality encoding and transfers can result in reference high definition PQ.

I can now put this on top without a doubt in my mind that it is the best HD movie available from both formats.

My rankings:

1. Hot Fuzz

2. King Kong

3. Apocalypto

Thats all folks

4 HD DVDs left at Fry's Burbank. 11:00 AM PT. BB and CC sold out.
0 HD DVD at Woodland Hills.

Good luck finding a copy here in LA from major retailers. If you do let us know if there is an extra copy for your fellow AVS members.

I too think this disc is fabulous. The only black mark I have is why on earth does it take so long to return to the menu after watching a special feature on the HD DVD side?

Yup! Advertising that doesn't cost Toshiba a dime, isn't visible and works incredibly well......there are now 4 HD DVD supporters at the office thanks to me. I imagine they will be passing the word along as well.

I love this movie!! Thanks for the comparison shots. Anyone who says they can't tell the difference should be offered a free eye exam at Lens Crafters...

Do me a favor and check this post I made at the BD Tier Thread. Don't get into the hype my friend.

Hot Fuzz PQ is for real.

I can't disagree with you there. In terms of best picture quality for wowing the average consumer, those would be my top three as well out of the 155+ HD DVDs and BDs that I've viewed and own.
