No more "perhaps" involved with whether I will be able to participate more fully in discussing this projector - give me a couple of weeks and I'll be glad to discuss how it compares to my old 4805. I just did the sensible thing (obtained consent from the family comptroller before making a four-figure click with my mouse button) and I've now got a VP4001 coming my way!
Although two days ago a uBid CSR could not speculate on whether they would be selling any more of these Marantzs, I can confirm the above comment from Tradewinds is accurate as of 1:00 a.m. 8/31/07 - Ubid has the VP4001 back for $1199, with S&H costing a fairly reasonable (for Ubid, who was notorious for inflating shipping prices, at least a few years ago) $23.69.
For anyone who has bought one of these from Ubid, who did they use for shipping and did they require a signature? I'll be out of town next week but I can make arrangements for my neighbor to accept the package.
I was just looking at the weight of these things to see if I would need some sort of extra-robust ceiling mount, but in the course of discovering that the VP4001 is a fairly typical 9.1lbs, I also happened to see that the Sharp XV-Z3000 is listed on projectorcentral.com as weighing 8.8lbs. While that may be too minimal of a difference to mean anything, perhaps it does support the claims from Marantz that the VP4001 has more in it than just the stock XV-Z3000 guts.
What do you think of the following $17 ceiling mount from forum sponsor Monoprice to go with the Marantz?http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...mat=4#feedback
In the words of Frank Barone, HOLY CRAP! this is exciting - I feel like a 6 year old trying to wake up mom and dad at 5:00 a.m. on xmas morning to go open presents. Now I just need to place my order for cables and other gear from Monoprice and figure out where to buy a big enough piece of hardboard to make a 110" screen.
