No email notification 8/4/07

For some reason I'm not getting any email notifications. This started today. I reset the cookies, logged off and on and still no notifications. Turned notification off and then back on, didn't help either.

Since I don't see any other posts regrading this I'm guessing it's specific to me, but I have no idea at this point what to try.

Hello,

It's likely you might have a spam blocker in the mix. Unfortunately, we can't do much about this. Try using a "real" e-mail address and not a free account like you are using now. Some of the free services tend to block e-mails from the AVS Servers.

AT&T and sbcglobal.net report that we are blocked via RBL black list. I have no idea as we seem 100% clear that I can see. But I see you use gmail and I just looked and mail is going out to you and not being rejected. As such, it could be a filter in your account on gmail.

It's very odd. Yesterday I changed to the Gmail addy and then I started getting notifications to both keenan@sbcglobal.net and the Gmail email, they were being sent to both addys.

Today, after getting David's PM about notification shutoff, I switched back to the keenan@sbcglobal.net and did not receive a verification email. Switched back again to Gmail and received the verification email at both addresses..

Not sure what is going on..

Okay, the current email addy is keenanjb@gmail.com - I have to use that one to even get the verification email so I can even post this message...

If I use the keenan@sbcglobal.net, the one I used for years, I don't get the verification and there for can't post and obviously not get any emails.

Is there a way to bypass the verification and see if that works?

I'm not sure what to do at this point...

Gmail is not having issue, SBC is. Thus you will not get mail from them and you need to tell them to WHITE LIST AVSFORUM as they are stopping mail they should not. AS mentioned, not sure what RBL they are using, be we are not listed in the main stream ones.

Okay, so I should call SBC and tell them what exactly? Not to block www.avsforum.com or is there some other specific URL or something I should refer to?

Thanks.

Wouldn't this be happening to all sbcglobal.net AVS members..??

I'm not getting anything at Gmail either right now..

Gmail can have delays in getting mail to you. They handle so much.

You need to tell SBC that they need to white list avsforum.com and/or our mail server. (Current IP 72.9.159.115) Let them know that one of the RBL black lists is stopping your mail from a legit site. And yes, they are blocking mail for ALL SBC customers from AVS.

Okay, I'll call them now. Thanks.

Okay, I've confirmed that AVS is on a "black list" with SBC. They instructed me to tell you that "you" have to contact them to have the site removed from the list. They said all the info to that was in the header of the emails that have bounced back to you. She didn't know the reason why AVS ended up on the list, but said the info was in the bounced-back emails. I can't do anything to correct the problem from my end.

So, with all this bouncing, the ball's in your court.

Geez,

what phone number or email or you using to contact att about this email blocking?

I wondered what was happening, until I looked here.

Edit: Found an email via my account.... yikes

I used the standard DSL suport phone number, which I can't find right now because they bury the damn thing in pages and pages self-help crap.

If you get a paper bill the number is on there. You'll have to get through the first tier of support and then you'll get someone who might know what's happening. The 2nd tier CSR I talked to understood the problem but explained that AVS has to respond to the bounced emails themselves.

We as the email recipients can't have the block removed, AVS has to do it.

Found it:

Yikes ... If it helps I'm noticing having this issue as well. My ISP+email account being AT&T worldnet (dial up) ... BTW, same email account(not free BTW) I've been using since 98 and for the almost 6 years now I've been AVSforum member, 1st time I've had a problem with this I can recall ...

FWIW, I just emailed one of their 'support agents', just in case it helps ....

Yes, AT&T/SBC has definitely screwed somehow, but AVS has to initiate the fix by contacting them.
Ok, after trying emailing them+getting a canned response without being sure whether or not I might later get a "real" response, I next tried their "chat with support agent" option ... I dunno if it's on the right track or not as he answered awfully quickly -- but in case it helps, This was his response :

CSR : "AT&T is blocking few domains due to a lot of spam attacks at AT&T e-mail account, however this issue can be fix, AT&T require few information from the Domain Administrator to unblock their domains. I apologize for the inconvenience."

CSR "I am going to send you a webpage and you need to forward this page to the senders and inform them to forward this page to their Domain Administrator and the Domain Administrator will fill this form and submit to AT&T."

Here is that URL for David/etc :

---------------------------------------------------------

My, it Seems to me they are asking for a little "much" aren't they ????? At this point I'm wondering if there's any other important email I'm not getting these days ..... I do recall many years ago when they first initiated their "spam blocker", they turned it on without telling me, I later noticed I was missing some emails, and had to go into my account settings and turn it off ..... It has, at least remained off since then ...

Again, Yikes ....

I've been thinking the same thing, I do know I'm not getting anything from TiVo Community, but I can't think of anywhere else that I'm missing.

My email to att tech support said it was my spam filter in my Yahoo account!

I don't use that and spam is off.

Admin............are you going to take care of this issue???
Hi...

I can not correct the issue with them as they are using an OUTSIDE RBL list that they should not be using. In the URL listed above, they ask for information we would not have as the e-mail are not bounced, they are outright rejected.

AT&T and SBC are using the same bad RBL. (I have to guess this seeing the problem with both of these e-mail started having issues at the same time.) As I have shown above, we are NOT listed on the major RBL's. Heck, AOL does not even block us. This shows that a bad list is being used. (IMHO)

When you say rejected do you mean it comes back with an invalid address or something to that nature, or does it give another reason and a way to contact them? I'm guessing the former...which means that we're going to have to drill through several levels of customer service to try and get this fixed from our end.

I still can't believe they just arbitrarily decided to start blocking emails in the first place, is that even legal?

What a way to start the day, maybe if I tell them to discontinue service I might be able to cut through several layers of support.

Is there anything in those rejections that might be of use when I/we call them? You have my permission to post a copy of one of mine here

I have sent e-mails to both companies at this time. We will see if they respond.

To Whom It May Concern:

Please be so kind to remove our mail server from your blacklist as it was put in without reason. The IP address of out Barracuda Spam Firewall protected mail server is 72.9.159.115. It handles mail for such sites as AVSFORUM.COM and TIVOCOMMUNITY.COM. AVSFORUM is the largest site dedicated to Home Theater on the net today. Even AOL does not block mail from us.

Your block is affecting thousands of our members that use your service who can not receive updates from us.

We are NOT listed on the major RBL's as you can see...

http://www.robtex.com/rbl/72.9.159.115.html

Please be so kind to remove the block as quickly as you can.

I can be reached at XXX-XXX-XXXX

Thank you.

Excellent, thanks David, I just think coming from you will carry much more weight than if it were to come from one of us.

Now we wait and see and see how fast a multi-billion dollar behemoth like AT&T acts on the request.

Had a feeling something like that might be the case ...

BTW, Follows is what I sent them(via chat and email) ... :

"Beginning over past several days, am not receiving emails being sent to my account from AVSforum's "instant email notification" feature, which normally occurs from their forum software when a message thread I participate in there is updated.

From a discussion on this issue on AVSforum, it seems likely the AVSforum site has been blocked by a RBL black list. Please fix this, AVSforum is a valid site, and I do not think I should be experiencing this problem ....

By the way I've been using this email account+AT&T worldnet since 1998, and have been AVSforum member since 2001 and this is first time this has happened.

Thanks,

I received a reply from AT&T

Quote:

Dear Administrator:

Thank you for contacting abuse_rbl@abuse-att.net.

The mail-server IP address(es) associated with your request will removed from
the block list within 24-36 hours from the date of this letter. AT&T WorldNet
Services, it's affiliates, and network services customers do NOT intentionally
block legitimate mail in the course of our anti-spam initiatives and regret for
any inconvenience this may have caused. If the IP that was recently blocked
begins to exhibit the characteristics of a compromised network object or is
compromised by an offender of Acceptable Use Policies, the IP address will be
blocked again.

Administrators: Please thoroughly check your IP logs before requesting
removal. You must determine that all traffic from the blocked IP is
actually from your mail servers to ensure your network is not compromised.
Administrators who fail to do this may experience subsequent and more
resolute blocking.

Thank you for helping the AT&T WorldNet Services network combat spam in all
its forms.

Regards,

AT&T Internet Investigations and Security Systems Team

Reminder to all that AVS does do what we can in regards to preventing spam. Right down to installing a $6K Barracuda Spam Firewall that all the mail must pass though for our protection and yours. (Thus anything sent from our servers.)

Just thought I would let you know where we stand in this case.

David - Thank you for handling this situation with ATT/SBC along with having the forum setup with the auto PM that I had emails denied/rejected. You do a great job at keeping such a huge forum running so nicely. Absolutely amazing!

Thanks!

Interesting...I just received the following from the e-mail I sent to SBC...

Quote:
We have received your request to be removed from our RBL.

After investigating the IP address provided, we have honored your
request and removed this IP address from our RBL.

Thank you,

The AT&T Internet Abuse Department

Note above I said a response from SBC, note how it was signed. I did not know SBC was part of AT&T. Learn something new every day. Now I see why both started having the issue at the same time.

Yes, SBC, which was formerly PacBell and I think Southwestern Bell bought the AT&T name and whatever AT&T owned at the time and renamed the whole company AT&T.

Well, I got the email change notification, but that's it, still haven't received any emails from threads...

What does the box titled "Notification" indicate? Whether a notification has been sent sent or not?

Curiously, the only notifications I'm getting are from the thread that's marked instant, and that thread is one I subscribed to while all this email nastiness was going on. I'm wondering if I need to unsubscribe and then re-subscribe to to jump start the process.

Are rest of you getting emails now?
