HD Radio Signal Problems in Minneapolis Area

For the past three weeks I have been losing the HD signal on a number of stations from about 9 am to about 6 pm. I work downtown and have had the Accurian HD radio for about two months with no problems until this. I really enjoy the radio and was pretty excited about it until this started happening. Does anyone in the Twin Cities area have an idea of what is going on and if and when it will ever be fixed?

Thanks

I'm in NC, but perhaps electrical inferference from a business? A leaky transformer? Air traffic overhead causing changing multipath conditions (a shot in the dark...highly unlikely!) What kind of antenna are you using? In radio, results are determined 85 percent (or more) by the antenna, and 15 percent by the radio.

You might want to call or e-mail some of the stations involved. Perhaps there is some work occurring at the tower site that necessitates reduced power on several stations that share a common antenna.

Downtown Minneapolis is roughly 15 miles south of the towers (in Shorewood), thus it'd be best if you've got some sort of LOS to the north.

If this started happening recently, you should try and listen to analog signals. Do you hear interference and noise? Did it sound like that before?

I'm in the twin cities area as well (Roseville) and live right near the towers. I just installed my HD radio in my car two days ago and everything was working fine until today. Now I'm getting no HD reception at all. The analog stations come in just fine, but none of the HD stations do. Maybe they're doing work on their HD radio equipment.

I just e-mailed one of the stations (K102) to see what's going on. I'll post back when/if I get a response. Since there are two of us having problems, I at least feel better knowing that I probably didn't break anything...

Wow, I heard back from the engineer at Clear Channel in Minneapolis already. Here's what she said:

"Correct, tower work is being performed on our main site, no digital backup exists - yet."

Hopefully they finish the work soon...

I noticed this tonight when I went out to the barn. Also, KMSP-TV made the announcement this morning that they are doing tower work at Shoreview this week. I think that there are two towers at Shoreview, but maybe they are more. Anyway, I sure missed the comdey channel on 93.7-2.

It's important to let HD stations know that WE NOTICE when things are amiss. It's still very early in the game. Most HD stations have only been broadcasting a year or so, and still don't have things locked in. Think FM in the mid 50s. Yes it had been around a few years, but nobody had any freakin' idea what to do with it, and there were few listeners. These things take time. In FM's case nearly four decades (no, I don't think HD will take that long...but it'll still lag behind analog for at least a decade, maybe more. Maybe MUCH more...there are hundreds of millions of perfectly good analog radios out there. I'm not going to quit using mine...especially not my gorgeous blonde-wood 1950s tube Zenith...still my favorite radio!)

Wait a minute! I read on another board that ALL EXISTING ANALOG RADIOS are WORTHLESS due to HD destroying the sound.

I called clear channel yesterday and they said they were having problems but they wouldn't give me a time frame on when it would be resolved. I have been having the problem for about three weeks now so hopefully they fix it soon. I think the whole HD thing is great so I hope it sticks around.

Yeah, well I read that the Earth is only 5,000 years old, and Adam and Eve rode dinosaurs everywhere they went. BS ain't that hard to spot

Correction: 6,000 years old.

And the Bible is HD not BS, in fact VHD (Very High Definition). No, make that UHD (Ultra High Definition).

Don't worry . . . in HD Radio's case, BS doesn't stand for anything.

Thanks Narkspud for the first belly-laugh I've had today!

rwagoner was joking if you haven't noticed. He's mocking the SayNOtoIBOC and HDRadioKillerApp crowd

bwam: Actually, it's between 5k and 6k, and the Bible is UltraHolySpiritDefinedDefinition (anything for a bigger acronym).

is this still a problem? i didn't really think much about this over the past couple of week. some stations still work for me, but most don't.

Today i installed a sirius tuner in my car along with the HD tuner and that was when i noticed that most were not working. It was driving me nuts because I thought i disconnected something.

I hope it is not my setup.

I hate the attitude you get from radio installers when you say you want HD Radio in your car...I assume they get a kick back from the satellite radios and I guess HD just doesn't pay enough...although they certainly charge enough for the radios!
