Where to put my TV and Components in Living Room?!?!

Guys, I am completely clueless on what to do with this room. It's a rather odd living room inside my new house. I need to find a place to mount a 50-60" flatscreen, associated speakers, and then figure out where to put the components. Can anyone give me any suggestions, as I have been racking my brain lately to no avail. Any help or advice is GREATLY appreciated. Here are the pictures:

The picture of the door is what you can start to see on the right hand side of the first picture (the opening). The last picture is what is directly to the right of that opening (if viewing the first picture, it's the corner nearest and to the right of the camera). If you have any questions on where a certain part of the room is, let me know so I can further clarify.

No suggestions at all? I could use any help, even if it's just a thought.

Where is the couch pointed? Will you use the fireplace or will be strictly ornamental? Otherwise I'd recommend the couch face the firplace and the tv wall mounted on the brick. The components could be hidden in the lower cabinets on the bottom.

I'd also consider an area rug (and even curtains) as you have a lot of hard surfaces throughout the room.

The fireplace idea isn't such a bad one. Just a few questions though. If I decided to mount the TV above the fireplace using one of those robotic arms (X-Arm), where would I run all the wires? That was my only qualm with it going up there. How would I run the wires to the components, and not have it looking like crap? Speaking of the components, if I put them in those two bottom cabinets, I would probably need to install vents in the tops of them, right? I was also thinking of painting that brick an off-white, and painting the wood around it black. It's just those damn cables.

Any ideas?

Oh, and as far as the area rug... definitely.

Any chance you can provide a top-view drawing with measurements?

Can you afford a motorized cabinet for the TV and components?

That way you could hide them when not in use and move, if necessary.

You haven't that many inexpensive options, IMHO.

Motorize above the fireplace and hide as a picture when not in use, etc...

Mount on swing mount on wall left of the fireplace. Turn TV to vertical and against the wall when not in use.

That's all I can come up with right now.

I'll get a top down drawing with measurements soon. My question now; If I get the X-arm and mount it above the fireplace mantle, where/how will I be able to run the wires? Anyone have any examples of something like that? Thanks for all the help, guys!

do you really like the brick ? or how would you feel about sheet-rocking that area, giving the fire place a new look and building supports for a wall mount. and that would also give you ability to pre wire the area and hide them behind the sheetrock.

i think being able to see the TV from the kitchen is best, so the fire place area would probably be best if you could swing the cost of the work.

I think that above a fireplace is a very bad place to mount a display. It's too high for comfortable viewing and it's too hot when you use the fireplace. You have a nice wall to the left of the fireplace that looks like an ideal spot to mount a large display. You might want to think about demolishing the cabinets surrounding the fireplace. Then build new cabinets by the fireplace and on the wall to the left of the fireplace. If you post a sketch of the room you might get some more ideas.

I'd ask how often do you have fires. If it's like once or twice a year (like most of us) then forego the fireplace, place your plasma directly in front of the fireplace and use the brick fireplace as a very nice backdrop. Place your center on the ledge above the fireplace and place two bookshelves in the racks on the side of the theater.

I moved into my house five years ago and have a beutiful fireplace, but after realizing that I hardly ever use it, I was able to better design my great room to accomadate my HT system. By ignorning the fact that I have a fireplace. Just a suggestion. I mean most people watch TV every day yet only use the fireplace a couple times a year. To me I would just use that as your ent center, and you don't have to knock anything down, so when you sell the house, just remove the TV and you'll be back where you started.

Or forego the plasma and go with a drop down screen and projector and black out shades for that bright room. Might cost as much as the plasma and get you a bigger picture.
