SURGE PROTECTOR FOR HDTV...which one?

I want to protect my new HD TV purchase (SONY KDS-50A2020) with a quality surge protector. I have had two different recommendations, one a Belkin UPS and one APC.

There is a significant difference in price, anyone have any reviews and/or reccomendations on this issue?

Thanks!

I will be purchasing the APC with battery backup. Check out ones with battery backup. Battery backup is necessary for anyone who has TVs with bulbs and DVRs.

I this may sound dumb but I don't understand all this,
isn't a battery back-up surge protector
the same as a UPS
or are they different
and if so how and which do I really need for my HDTV.

Well with a TV with a lamp you don't want power yanked all of a sudden because the fans won't have a chance to cool things down....so power goes out, you turn off TV and fans run off of UPS and do the cool down.

Looks good. uninterruptible power supply (UPS) is the battery backup and the surge protection is for the power 120v coming in. Surge cuts off if the power coming in gets to high or to low (brown out) in some surge protectors.

How important is it to have one to run coaxial through it for an OTA antenna?

VERY important...

Since we're way off topic here already; your coaxial cable should be grounded via a simple ground block and a ground rod just before it enters the house.

The purpose is to bleed off any static charges naturally occurring before this static charge builds up enough to:
1. mildly zap your electronics, causing minor or major damage
2. attract a lightning strike

The antenna mast (not the antenna itself) should also be grounded.

Some (not all) surge protectors with 'coaxial IN, coaxial OUT' serve only to introduce noise to your picture quality.

Ground your coaxial cable and mast properly and leave a surge suppressor or UPS out of that equation.

We now return to your regularly scheduled discussion of surge protectors for electronics.
Buy the best that you can reasonably afford.
