Toshiba HD-A35 vs. Onkyo

I expect build quality and audio to be better with the Onkyo, but we won't know until they are actually available.

HD805 will also offer high bit rate audio streaming via HDMI.

Too bad there are no DTS-MA HD DVD discs that I know of.

Do either support playback of my multichannel DVD-A's or SACD's? What about my home recordings on DVD +/- R and RW?

I would like anolog outs. but even if it does offer them, being that it MAY be based on the xa2, it'll will only come in 5.1 fashion vs my sought-after 7.1.

Go to the DTS site and do their search under DTS enabled content. 84 foreign and domestic titles came up under "DTS HD Master Audio"

Yes on the DVD-RW and R if the disc is recorded in "video mode" and is finalized.

Thanks for the reply. I'm just trying to decide on the best HD-DVD player to compliment my PS3. I would like to cover as many formats as possible (I seem to have acuired just about all of them at one point or another) while paring down the hardware source components.

Short list of movies which have DTS-HD MA or DTS-HD

Enemy at the Gates MA and HD
Rambo 1, 2 and 3 MA and HD
Terminator 2 MA and HD
Total Recall MA
The Pianist MA and HD
The Fog MA and HD

So if someone imports a bunch of movies it would make sense to go for the Onkyo. Unless they want to save some $$$ and buy even more movies, lol

I didn't think any were domestic.

Why would I want to spend almost $400.00 more for a HD DVD player when I could use all that money and build a great collection of HD movies. It's not like the Onkyo is going to give you a picture that greater than the A35. But if one has the money to spend, why not the Onkyo just for the hell of it.

If Oppo can do DVD-A and native SACD (read here ) why can't Toshiba and Onkyo can get their act together?
Maybe Oppo can save HD-DVD doing a player for under $199.

Know what? This is something I've not heard before or seen written anywhere else here. Everyone is always talking about Onkyo, RCA, NEC etc HD DVD, but never Oppo.. It's sounds very feasible.

I don't believe that the Toshiba A-35 has the Reon-VX.

The Onkyo's cousin Integra model (same price) also has a longer warranty than both the Toshiba and Onkyo model. Integra offers 3 year warranties across the entire product line.

I thought that the Onkyo used the Relata?

Also for the Toshiba it is no doubt going to use the Reon and I suspect that the A35 will be faster since it's newer gen.

Until they both come out it's hard to say which will be the better of the two.

Just be aware that Onkyo has had Toshiba OEM many of their DVD players in the past. This most likely a A35 with the additional dts functionality.

Onkyo is an audio company they traditionally don't design their own video products from the ground up.

The A35 looks like a no brainer.

for the onkyo price of $ 899 I'd rather spend a few hundred more on the Samsung Dual player.

I'm 100% certain that the Anchor Bay Technologies logo that's on the A35 precludes the existence of a Silicon Optix chipset in that player.

However we still don't know what will be doing the de-interlacing in the A35. It'd be nice to see the ABT2010 used as that would put the scaling abilities at, or above, those of the Reon, and it would put the de-interlacing abilities above the Reon as well.

This player was confirmed some time ago to be based on the XA2.

It doesn't It has VRS by Anchor Bay. Says so right on the machine along with SHARC

How can you compare 2 units that haven't even hit stores yet?

I'm glad to see the gen 3 Toshibas arrive and clearly the Onkyo has to be good news too but I think they are missing a trick.

As has been pointed out if the upper end of the bargain market and mid market SD DVD players can all have SACD & DVD-Audio why not the new HD DVD players?

......and I really want 1 player & to junk my old Pioneer DV696 so I'd be looking for something that does all it can do and give me excellent HD DVD.

So Divx/Xvid is also a total must for me.

Pity they aren't giving me what I want yet cos if they did I'd have been 'in' to a Toshiba HD DVD player months ago.

The Pioneer, my PC & XBox 360 HD DVD add-on will all have to do a while longer I guess.
