I am looking forward to your comparison as these two $600 speakers are the ones I am trying to decide between. Keep us posted!

Thanks,

just a heads up for everyone whose packages shipped this week. i just tracked it again and it now shows that it wasn't picked up by fedex until yesterday, and the estimated delivery date is pushed back one day.

That does stink. How can they lose a 125+ lb package? Hopefully this gets rectified quickly and you have your sub in no time.

Does anyone know if you can order the A5-350 unfinished so that I can paint or cover it to my liking? Seeing that this sub as a 550 watt amp vs the 350 watt amp in the Knight/Caliber and on top of that includes free shipping, I may have my mind decided without having to wait for Craig's feedback on the Castle and Tower.

I had a similar discussion w/ the folks at eD about this very subject yesterday (not the A5 specifically, but any sub).

Yes, they will build and ship a sub unfinished, but the sanding / finish work that goes on before paint won't save anything on the price. What you'll receive is a smooth box ready for veneer work on gloss painting if that's your desire (I was inquiring as I want to veneer one).

Just connect with them via the online chat function and ask.

Well, mine is being delivered today, ordered it on 10/31 but I am guessing you are closer to Iowa to have it delivered that fast. I will be testing it out for sure if I can fit the box in my car. Anyone know the rough dimensions of the box it is shipped in?

Also, I want to through this question out even though this is not the right area, but thought someone would know since this is such a big sub thread.

My dvd player says that it has a frequentcy response of 30-20000, is this going to prevent my sub from receiving frequencies below 30? This seems like a dumb question, but I am confused by the master list of BASS dvds thread where frequencies below 20 are listed even though most receivers and devices don't put out signals below 20htz.

Anyways, just wondering if I need to upgrade the DVD player, also wondering how I can find out how low my sound card outputs as this will also be a big portion of what goes through the receiver.

I would assume that's via the analog outputs, not the .1 information via digital.

Well retailer specs are so vague, so I found the manual and it makes me feel a little better:

AUDIO PERFORMANCE

DA Converter 24 bit, 192 kHz

DVD fs 96 kHz 4Hz- 44kHz
fs 48 kHz 4Hz- 22kHz
SVCD fs 48 kHz 4Hz- 22kHz
fs 44.1kHz 4Hz- 20kHz
CD/VCD fs 44.1kHz 4Hz- 20kHz
Signal-Noise (1kHz) > 90 dB
Dynamic range(1kHz) > 80 dB
Crosstalk (1kHz) > 70 dB
Distortion/noise (1kHz) > 65 dB
MPEG MP3 MPEG Audio L3

Although looking at the manual, it does not do DTS. Until now that hasn't been a big issue, but well now my sound system if finally coming together. I guess I will have to do something about this.

Maybe a HD-A2 or HD-A3 is in my near future.

Max,

What DVD player is it?

Must be old to not have DTS...even PS2's have DTS capability

Yeah, that is what I thought, it's the Philips DVP5982. I got it for the Mpeg4 playback and see how it could do on up-conversion

I did a find on the PDF manual for "DTS" and there aren't any results. What do you expect I guess, it has its purposes.

Alright found it, it does, just weird they don't mention it in the manual.

If you want to enjoy DTS sound on the player, you will have to connect via Coaxial to a Multichannel Receiver or connect via HDMI to a HDMI Receiver.

Connecting via Coaxial to a multichannel receiver:

1. Press SETUP on the remote control. The system setup menu appears.
2. Press to select { Audio Setup Page }
3. Press to select { Digital Audio Setup }, then press
4. Press to select { Digital Output }, then press
5. Select { All } and press OK

Note: When using Coaxial output, HDMI Audio has to be set to { OFF }.
Connecting via HDMI to a HDMI Receiver:

1. Press SETUP on the remote control. The system setup menu appears.
2. Press to select { Audio Setup Page }
3. Press to select { Digital Audio Setup }, then press
4. Press to select { HDMI Audio Setup }, then press
5. Select { ON } and press OK

Ok, now to get back on topic, can't wait to get the A5-350 home.

Found the manual and yeah, at least it has DD

It would appear that it will output down to 4Hz from a DVD so you should be fine on Dolby Digital stuff.

You posted while I was posting...no fair

Have fun with it.

I just ordered my A5-350 also.

Decided to go for the full 5.1 system, and did the following....

1 x A6 - 6T6 - Tower Pair
1 x A6 - 6T6 - MTM Single
1 x A6 - 6T6 - MTM Pair
1 x A5 - 350 Subwoofer

Everything but the sub should arrive at my mom's place before I get home from Iraq, and HOPEFULLY the sub won't be far behind! It will be pushed by an Onkyo 505 I bought a few years back......for now.

Wow, those are going to be some nice beefy surrounds, well compared to my in wall polks that "put out sound"

Well that will be a very nice welcome home present too. Congrads!

Dont forget your power amps, and safe trip back from the sandbox.
Thanks guys! What "power amps"?

I do know I have to get any and all cables I need, as well as the Onkyo iPod adapter. Come to think of it, I should order that adapter now.

My neighbors are going to hate me.

Haha, he's gonna get the surrounds and be like holy **** where do I put these things, haha. I got mine and was like WOW.... Right off the bat I fired it up and was amazed at how much better the center audio was. Of course I think my Audissey has the center cranked up a little to keep up with the towers so we will see what it does with it when I recalibrate.

The problem is, I have a wrap around couch, so I'm probably going to have to find stands that clear the back of the couch (think appx kitchen counter height.)

Well I don't know how you would lose 130lbs of a box, I got mine today at work. There was no possible way I was putting it into my Honda while still in the box. just loaded it up naked for the ride home

Hey what's everybody using in terms of the crossover?

Are you using the crossover in your receiver, the knob on the plate amp, or a combination of both?

I'm using a Denon 2808CI btw.

Not sure what youre using to power your speakers, an AVR will work fine, but I would suggest seperates, perhaps using the AVR as a pre/pro and going with a Multichannel amp.

For now I'm just using my few year old Onkyo 505, though that will change with time. I figure my next step should be replacing the 1990's 27" tv.....

Got the 350 bad boy home yesterday and hooked it up right away just randomly near the center of the room. It wasn't doing too much until I started messing with the options on the Yamaha V2700. I tried out some random songs and was very pleased, then I tried to remember some of the movies that are listed in the "movies with bass" thread and well I remember War of the Worlds when the machines emerge.

Umm...... Wow! The only thing better is seeing my girlfriends face when she saw the size of the sub

Question though:

I am placing the sub on carpet and due to the weight and such, there is barely any gap left between the bottom of the sub and the carpet, less than a half inch. Is this ok or should I find a way to raise it up?

maxpower: what settings do you have the 3 knobs set to? thanks

Also, I just wanted to add to what so many have already said about ED having awesome customer service. CS like what they provide has gotten very rare, but it's nice to see some companies still put the customer first. I will definitely buy more from them in the future as well as recommend them to friends.

Currently I have all the knobs pointed straight up, or half way on all 3 essentially to get a reference point for now.

I should really stop reading these forums for the next couple of weeks! Its too damn hard hearing about you guys playing with your new toys while my A7-450 is still "waiting for woodshop."

Yeah, sorry about that, but my eD towers are arriving today too, so more fun for the weekend

The wait is worth it, believe me. Just think you are getting a new coffee table too

You'll love the speakers I have the A6-6T6 Towers, A6-5T5 MTM's for rears, and my A6-6T6 MTM should be here shortly as its on the Fed Ex truck for delivery, and also i have the smaller A2-300 which is still crazy loud for my townhouse.

Im glad to see more people are buying their speakers I love mine. I always recommend them for the price especially when you get the 15% package discount.

I thought I've read that the subs come with metal discs that you can put on the carpet (or hardwood) so the spikes won't penetrate the carpet, thus keeping the clearance. I don't have one...yet, so I'll wait to see what others say

That is what I recalled too and yes it does come with some, but I thought it was for wood floors so you don't puncture the wood, but I guess it would do something on carpet too. I'll try it out.
