Other than not being properly formatted (FAT) I've never had an issue using numerous different USB drives & sticks on my Yammy. This includes even the very cheapest "give away" USB sticks.

If you still have issues after verifying correct FAT formatting, try running basic maintenance routines on the USB device (error checking, clean up, etc..).
Might also check for additional partitions on the device, as well as any manufacturer loaded USB/drive utilities. These two things can cause issues with some non-computer USB players, whether these would cause issues with your Yammy AVR I don't know.

Thinking just of using it in my bedroom for music, could possibly even replace my pioneer elite 56txi but I'm thinking my pioneer is a better overall amp. Thoughts on and 1800 vs my elite??

That would be an awesome deal if the unit is completely functional and comes with the correct remote.
I've never done a side by side comparison between Yamaha and Pioneer. They will likely sound "different" but which sounds better is very subjective.

You said "rear" left/right surrounds. Not sure if you really meant that, but for 5.1 you don't want to use the rear surrounds (the terminals marked SURROUND BACK), you have to use the ones just marked SURROUND (regardless of where your speakers are physically positioned).

Sorry, yeah your correct. I followed the diagram in the manual for 5.1, so the connections recommended there for 5.1.

Anyone have any feedback?

What do the little indicator lights on the 1800 front panel show? They tell you how many channels are actually being sent by the player.

Have the 3800, but sure everything is the same. Not sure I totally understand what you mean but I'll try to describe what I do see.

I have the selector on "move" showing cinema dsp, virtual, PCM, PL II (playing test music CD that has PL II encoded), and I see a L, C, R, LFE, SL, SR when playing the test CD.

I just wanted to make sure the indicators really showed that the receiver was being fed a 5.1 track while playing the movie you had a problem with (Transformers 2). Sometimes the wrong sound track gets selected in the player by accident.

Did blind test....got it right less than half the time.

In my system, DacMagic did not result in a significant improvement. But there is no doubt that DacMagic is a significant improvement over the Squeezebox Duet's DAC.

I see that you are using the speaker-outs and pre-outs at the same time. I need to run my speakers in exactly the same configuration because I am using the Polk RT3000p towers that have an amplified sub section. Using the front pre-outs and the speaker outs at the same time gives me stereo subs. The manual does tell us not to do this, anyone know why and what the problem could be?

My system is set up as such:

Digital Cable box-->HDMI-->Yamaha AVR-->HDMI 1 TV
WDTV-->HDMI-->Yamaha AVR-->HDMI 1 TV
PS3-->HDMI-->Yamaha AVR-->HDMI 1 TV
Airport Express-->Optical-->Yamaha AVR

My Question for the experts is this, I would like to know if it's possible to watch content from either Digital Cable, WDTV, or PS3 and have the AVR pass through Video/Audio to the tv, and allow me to play music from my airport express over the speakers connected to the AVR.

Typical usage would be for example, I like to have cnbc on in the background at while I'm working on my laptop, however I don't want to listen to the hosts all day so I'm wondering if it's possible to play other sources over the speakers and have them low on the tv.

If you switch from a video source to a non video source the video stream from the previous source is still used on the hdmi output. SÃ¥ select the input for the Digital Cable and the select the input used for the Airport Express. I use this with my 3800'en and I cant't remember having set any thing for the avr to behave like this. just try.

Hi all.
Have a question about networking for the 3800.
I have mine connected to my router using a gadget that Logitech manufactured some years ago to allow wireless operation of the XBox 360.
It consists of two "black boxes". One connects to a port on my router, the other to the 3800. The two boxes connect to each other wirelessly. They were manufactured as matched pairs so as to only connect to each other.
I've been using it for internet radio, and it works great.
I'd like to try it to access files on my computer.
I have Windows Media Player 11 installed on the computer, and have set it to allow sharing.
As I mentioned, net radio works great, but I can't figure out how to access the computer. When I select PC/Musicast on the menu, the next screen shows "server" listed, but that's as far as I get.
If I understand it correctly, shouldn't folders and/or files show up?
I know there's something I'm not doing, or doing incorrectly, but I can't figure out what it is.
Thanks.

Edit to add: Running Windows XP.
Best guess is to check your computer to allow file sharing.
If that doesn't do it I'd also look into your firewall and anti-virus software possibly blocking the port connection to the computer.
Even though I don't understand why, I have to be running Media Player on my PC before the 3800 finds the music. Other than that, I just made sure the folders are shared.

Because the Yamaha networking is written for WMP or WMConnect. There are a couple other server programs that in some way "emulate" WMC like Twonky, but essentially you are tied to a WM server.
Somewhere there must be a "server" as the AVR of any brand has no inbuilt server program.

Now this is a smarter move. I have been agonizing over the whole HDMI 1.4a thing and unless directv or their sources have compelling content I would not drop this receiver in the ebay bucket so fast. This is my favorite AVR of all time. I've been through Onkyo 700/800 and all the various pops and lips sync issues, I have a pioneer Elite too, this has the best sound and features, very pleased. If I were starting from scratch I'd probably buy the new RX-A2000. But as soon as I got that one broken in someone will invent HDMI 1.5

Hi again all.
RE: My issue with file sharing and the 3800
I finally figured out some things, and Windows Media Player is CORRECTLY set for sharing. It wasn't before as there were some services that were disabled on the computer, so share media wouldn't "stick" in media player.
I corrected that, and sharing in media player works as it should. Before correcting the services issue, when I clicked allow sharing, it would lock up for a moment or two, and wouldn't show the box that lists devices I want to allow. The receiver should show up in that box, but doesn't.
My anti-virus (Norton) "sees" the AVR in the network map, and as I posted earlier, net radio works fine.
I still can't get the actual folders/files to show up. When I use the NET/USB button on the remote, and get to the screen that allows me to select net radio, PC/Musicast, USB, and I select PC/Musicast, the next screen shows "server", but that's it.
It seems I have everything set up correctly. The fact that net radio works, and Norton sees the receiver, tells me I'm correct.
Any other thoughts?
Thanks again.

The only thing I can suggest is to temporarily turn OFF any/all firewalls and antivirus, see if it connects.
Also, I presume both AVR and computer are connected to the same router and are on the same network/sub-net? Does your router have "guest" networks where new devices are on a different network than your computer?
What is the IP address of your computer and your AVR?

Hi Toby.

Firewalls and anti-virus disabled.
AVR and computer on same router, etc.
No guest networks.
As I posted, anti-virus network map sees the receiver, and net radio works.
There's some setting I'm missing somewhere, but I'm stumped at this point.
Thanks much for the reply.

Just found this forum, figured you guys may know the answer to this one:

I've been struggling with this problem with my RX-V3800 for a few years now, it's always been a thorn but not a huge issue.

I have my Satellite HD box set up connected to the component inputs on DTV/CBL and the audio connected via the optical in. But I get no on-screen display for the DTV/CBL setting from the receiver for volume and surround setting, etc.

I've got a BD-DVD on the BD/HD input, another satellite on the DVR input (not HD) and a couple of other things as well and they all have the on-screen display.

Any clues why I can't get it on only the DTV/CBL?
It's being converted to HDMI, I assume? I did think that any analog to HDMI converted video got on screen overlayed.

In fact, it was HDMI that I thought got no overlay for volume and such until the 3900.
The 3800 only supports volume overlay (so-called "short messages") for SD analog inputs. It won't show it on any HDMI input, or on any HD component input (720p, 1080i or 1080p).

So the real concern is why you would see it from your BD/DVD player. It must be connected by component and not be sending an HD signal, which is not really what you want. I would have expected a BD to be sent in HD even for component (hence no volume overlay), but a DVD is probably not being upconverted (hence volume overlay is displayed).

Sooo I turned my 3 year old 3800 on this morning and it shut off right away with a puff of smoke...worked fine last night...going in to the shop Monday...being a noob with this stuff ..smoke and electronics =not good..not sure if it will be worth repairing...I guess will know more tomorrow..anyone else experience this...or a rough idea of what the problem could be prior to facing the inevitable and perhaps having to weigh an expensive repair vs ...a new model...thanks in advance...
You are scaring me, gunned. Just checked and my 3800 receiver is dated from 1/17/2008. Still working, though, but now, for how long?
Just checked and I purchased it November of 2008 ..had 2 yr warranty through the dealer. Now I have to find out if it is fixable and if so what is the saw off point before I just say forget it...not sure how much that thing is worth so if the repair is crazy expensive then I may have to go shopping again...
I told my wife about these latest posts, and she accused me of wanting to go shopping for a new AVR. LOL!
I have to admit...that's the first discussion I had with "the boss"...bad enough that I had to explain how I came home one saturday with that amp and 2 paradigm floor standers...and then an SVS sub shows up at my door a few weeks later!!!lol~!!! funny thing is she hates the sound now that we have had to use the tv speakers...didn't even know they worked ....I hope to get more info today...been lucky ..this is the first piece of electronics that has failed on me in a long time....so it must be "my turn"...
If you purchased the Yamaha with a credit and from an authorized dealer your credit card may automatically extend the warranty by one year.
I'd definitely check.
...sadly it was cash ....I can only hope it's not terminal...but I am prepared for it ...if that is the case..we will see...
Hi again.
Still trying to figure out why my 3800 doesn't "see" my computer.
In doing some reading about my router, I found this:

Select Enabled to allow UPnP communication between the Router and the computer that is UPnP compliant.
By default, UPnP is Disabled.

Could the fact that UPnP is disabled on the router be the cause?
Try it and see.
