Official Sony KDS-XXA3000 OWNERS THREAD! - Page 431

Hello,
That is good to hear the OEM equivalent bulbs work well. I have been looking at the A2000/2020/XBR1/XBR2 threads and honestly feel terrible for them. The number of Optical Block failures is stunning. Almost as bad as Xbox 360 failures.

Again, knock on wood, it would seem the A3000 generation rectified the vast majority of problems which plagued earlier iterations. So cruel that once they iron out the major stumbling blocks to LCOS/SXRD they abandon the technology aside from Front Projectors. I am planning on purchasing a 4K SXRD Projector in the next six months. I have had the opportunity to view a few FP SXRD setups and the results are stunning.

For as much as Sony is maligned, I have profound respect for their willingness to innovate. While SACD, Beta, Minidisc, and widespread adoption of SXRD did not materialize, at least they tried.
Cheers,

Heads up for owners. If you are looking to get a Blu Ray Player or the PS3, you might want to seriously consider getting the new PS3. Yes it can now bitstream the HD audio codecs, but here is a real bonus. With A Bravia tv, which the A3000 is, with Bravia sync and HDMI CEC, one could use the remote for the A3000 to turn on and off all you capable HDMI devices. So you could use the A 3000 remote to turn on the TV, which would then turn on the PS3 and in my case my DEnon receiver all with one button for on and off. Also the A3000 remote can scroll the XMB and I am guessing access it, so you could use the one remote for Blu Ray watching thru the PS3 and it would control, on off, volume, etc and I am guessing anything the remote can handle for the tv.

This makes the case for the PS3 where people were having an issue since it has no IR support.

Anyway as this new PS3 comes out, I am sure we will hear more, but I wanted to let owners of the A3000 know they have yet another really good bonus to having their sets. I am guessing there are Sony BD players that offer the same with Bravia sync and HDMI CEC, I haven't looked into them, but for those who are gamers or who want to game, surf the net, have a media server, a BD player, etc all in one, the new slim might be the ticket connected to the A3000.

Good lookin' out, Hughmc! I've been contemplating getting a second PS3 to mate with my bedroom 32" Sony LCD, and the new Slimmy looks to fit the bill. But with bitstream capability, I'll probably swap the current one back there.

I've read a bunch of news articles and spec sheets on the Slimmy but haven't been able to verify its HBR audio capability. Guess I must've missed one or two. How were you able to confirm it?

Basic,

This:

http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=3301

and more importantly this:

http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-10314795-1.html

"We have a PS3 Slim review sample onhand, so it was easy to confirm the rumor. We had the PS3 Slim connected to the Sony STR-DN1000 receiver via HDMI, and we loaded up "Appaloosa," which as a Dolby TrueHD soundtrack. After making a few tweaks in the XMB, were able to make the STR-DN1000's display say "Dolby TrueHD"--confirmation that the Slim was sending the soundtrack in encoded bit stream format. Next, we loaded up "Master and Commander," which has a DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack, and that worked as well."

The even bigger plus of all this for owners of the PS3 and Bravia tv's is millions more will buy a PS3 and support for both utilizing Bravia Sync and HDMI CEC should be good.

Here is where it confirms Bravia Sync:

BRAVIA® Sync Feature

The new PS3 system is also equipped with the BRAVIA® Sync feature. By connecting the new PS3 system and a BRAVIA TV with the HDMI cable, users are able to directly operate the XMB on PS3 using the TV remote control. Other functions include "System Standby" that will automatically turn off the PS3 system when the BRAVIA TV is turned off*4

It should store OK. These places keep them in stock until you order them -- they aren't fresh off the assembly line or anything. So, if they can store them until needed, you can store them until needed.

At the current rate I am using my TV, it will be 3 more years until the odometer rolls over to 8,000 hours. I just decided to get one now since the price + shipping was so good.

I ordered it last night and was emailed the UPS tracking number today.

They use the same catalog picture for both -- so they have to be the same, right?

Here's their FAQ:

Quote:

SOME LAMP FAQ’s

What do we sell?

Replacement projector lamps to revive your home theater or presentation equipment at a price that is unbeatable. Whether your projector is dim or completely out, our genuine replacement lamps will undoubtedly get back the brightness you started out with.

What is an OEM lamp?

It is the original equipment for your Projector or RPTV.

It is NOT generic and it is NOT a bare lamp* (with exceptions for specific designs, see below)

It IS the exact lamp that came with your Projector or TV!

What is an AL Lamp?

AL Lamps outsources the developing and manufacturing of replacement projector lamps using bulbs identical to those originally supplied with the projector.

They are endorsed by leading bulb manufacturers and guarantee uncompromised performance.

Is there a warranty??

Absolutely! Although it is very rare for an AL or an OEM lamp to fail, it does happen. In the event you encounter a defective lamp we will exchange it. If it has been in use and working and then fails within the warranty period, there is a manufacturer’s warranty that covers the lamp as well. Most OEM lamps are covered by a 90 day warranty and AL lamps are covered by 180 day warranty!

Beware!

A lot of companies out there are selling bare lamps that will fit in your existing housing. This means that you must rewire the bulb and housing and sometimes even solder connection points! All the while you are handling the lamp with the possibility of causing fracture or leaving oil deposits.

In addition these lamps are of unequal specifications and do not produce the same light output as an original lamp. Typically the brightness is reduced between 32% and 218%.
(I remember someone on this forum got a replacement bulb and said it was "different". I'm pretty sure it was not from this site that sells bulb + housing. They are promising you will get the same quality bulb with the same specs.)

*There are a few replacements out there that do not require a housing by design. Some examples are the Sharp CLMP series as well as some popular Zenith bulbs. In short, if you are pulling out a lamp and cartridge from your unit, that is exactly what is for sale here!

That is awesome that the PS3 will permit bitstreaming of True HD and DTS-MA. If I did not already have 2 Pioneer BDP-51's and a BDP-05FD which all bitstream in addition to a launch PS3, I would definitely grab one. I love my PS3 and have used it as a giant iPod and SACD spinner in addition to the usual stuff. Great news that SATA'a are still user swappable and 100 Dollars cheaper to boot.

I am waiting until the HDMI 1.4 BDP's are released to purchase another BDP. I am starting to get excited about some of the capabilities of the new spec. Same with Displays. Bring on 3D.

Hello,

Sorry to intrude arround, I'm happy owner of a "old" KDF-E50A11 that is still working very fine, but will go for Blu-ray player very soon. My problem is that in France there's no way to find any Rear projector TV any more.
As yours KDS-XXA3000 seems to be the "upgraded to 1080p/24" version of mine, I would like to know if on your side it is still possible to buy some in shop or web reseller ?
If not, would you advice any other brands that still make some rear projector TV (1080p/24) but preferly not with DLP technology ...
thanks in advance,
cheers

Thanks Hugh! Yep, just as I thought, the first two got by me. I saw the official Sony press release and it did list the lossless codecs under "Audio Output". But seeing as we're talking about Sony (*smirk*), I thought it best perhaps for me to not assume.

Anyhoo, most may not need or desire it, but I say it's always nice to have the option.
Hello,
The Bravia Sync is a pretty cool feature. That coupled with bitstreaming makes the new PS3 all the BDP anyone would need.

The fact that all BD's play on PS3's coupled with constant upgrades, make the PS3 by far the most reliable player out there.

Surflife, if I am not mistaken, yours is a LCD RPTV and not SXRD. Unfortunately, the only RPTV's still made seem to be DLP. Though, JVC might still make their version of SXRD RPTV. However, more than likely, all that will be easily available in a RPTV will be DLP.

I just ordered a new lamp from "Advanced Lamps" for my 60A3000 even though it's only got 3500 hrs. on it (1.5 yrs. old) I couldn't pass up the $97 price. I probably won't use it for at least another yr. so would yo recommend I install it for a short time just to make sure it's ok,& then swap it back to the original one or just wait & replace it when needed. any one get a lamp that's DOA & had to send it back ? .
Thanks

Hello,
I just received my replacement XL-5200 today. Even though my picture seemed fine, I went ahead and replaced it. I cannot believe how much brighter my picture is. I did have at least, 5000 hours on the bulb. This is after using Avia and DVE-HD and it still seems like a new display.

If purchasing a OEM equivalent, I would probably at least make sure it is operational. If I heard mixed reviews from Advanced lamps, so if it was me, I would put it in. I ended up getting mine from Sony.

I've never gotten one DOA, but it's very possible for a bulb to be damaged in shipping. So I'd definitely check it out right away.

Swapping is up to you. But if it came in the housing, it's quick and easy to plug in and test, then save until needed. If it didn't, I'd go ahead and use the new one, and save the old one for emergencies, since it's a bigger PITA to swap out a bare bulb.

I would swap it and use it at least until the warranty ran out since that starts the day you receive it.

hmm. i think my screen is getting a slight green tint to it or something. I mostly use it for gaming so i dont watch too many movies with it. But lately ive been watching quite a bit of blue ray movies and it seems like in dark scenes stuff has a slight greenish tint to it. I dug through this thread and see people refering to a 'green blob' problem, but cant seem to find any posts saying exactly what the heck that is. I dont think tahts my issue though because its nota blob, just a general greenish hue im seeing on some movies latel durring darker scenes. I noticed it most recently on some scenes in the punisher warzone and watchmen. Bright scenes i dont seem to notice it, or in games though

is there some test to see if the tint is off or something? I rented an AVIA II dvd recently from netflix but dont really understand the color test section, besides it seems you need the glasses for it

anyone know whats up with the set? id hate for it to be crapping out on me, i did recently upgrade the firmware to a T with the Cnet memory stick. Is it possible that screwed it up?

The best way to see a problem with your optical block is by looking through
grayscale. Looking for color impurities on color bars or screen is hard. Use a
pattern that has 100% white, mid-white, gray, mid black, black.

thats what im trying to find out, which pattern should i use? I have avia II here and will be getting DVE from netflix soon. i will then buy whichever i prefer. Im hoping DVE is better AVIA II wasn't very good, and almost all the test patterns have no explination at all

Would the hue/sat option that you use with the color filters fix this or do i have to use something else?

im not looking to get this spot on since i mostly game on it, with just a little movie watching; so im not buying an eye to get it just right. I just want to know what kind of test pattern i can use to dial the green tint down. Will i be messing with the hue? or the Green setting in white ballance, both the highs and lows?

I find it really odd that i dont notice it at all on video games, just movies

this isn't the green blob thing i see people keep mentioning is it? I couldn't find a description of what that actually was just a lot of people complaining about it. I only noticed this after the stupid C-net update. i guess i should have left it alone but i wanted to remove the low pass filter it had =(

I hadn't thought about that....

Hmmmm... got mine $97 replacement bulb two days ago, opened the box but have not installed it yet. I hadn't planned to since I only have like 2200 hours on the original bulb.

This was going to be a replacement to have on hand. But you make a good point.

I got my $97 bulb a couple of days ago too. If I were to try it out, would this reset the bulb counter on the tv? I have about 3500 on my original bulb.

No. In General Settings, there is an icon for Lamp Replacement. Only upon pressing and confirming the icon will the counter be reset.

What are you trying to say? Are you calibrating or do you want to see if there's
a problem with your optical block?

im trying to figure out WHAT the problem is. I dont think its the optical block, unless i misunderstand, the green blob problem usually doens't cover the whole screen, correct? What i have is slight greenish tinge to the overall screen, that i dont even notice all the time. I dont notice it with games, only with DVD's and blue ray it seems. and even then not all the time.. it seems only scenes with lots of light bloom, or darker scenes on skin tones and the like. Its possible its had this the whole time and i never noticed it because i hardly watched movies on it before.

and there is NO green tinge on purely white scenes which if its the green blob thing i should notice right? I.e. Whiteout scenes in games, or a movie or something, the screen looks regular white, no green tinge at all

Im trying to figure out if it IS an optical block problem, or some kind of calibration issue. Im trying to find the best way to see if i can adjust it with the white balance or hue controls at all. Thats what im asking. Right now i have an AVIA II disk i rented thats not much help, and i have DVE on its way now. Is there a test pattern on DVE or something i can use to check greyscale or whatever the white balance setting changes? Im hoping its something i can adjust with calibration.. regular calibration, without buying one of those eyes

im wondering if the update screwed this all up. I never noticed this untill i installed the suposed CNET fix a month or 2 back.. theres no way to go back to the previous version is there?

Put a grayscale pattern up and adjust your Gain and Bias to match D65 or
at least eyeball it. Go to calibration forum and there is a free DVD download
there that can help you. It's called AVSHD.

thats what i plan on doing, im just not really clear what a greyscale pattern really is or how to tweak it right. I'll check the section you mentioned. someone else recomended this

http://www.calibrate.tv/

which pattern am i really looking for from that page?

http://www.calibrate.tv/patterns/patterns.html

guess im just not really clear exactly what pattern to use and what my goal is in eyeballing it. I'm guessing tweaking down the green highs and lows in white balance.. is it one of the black and white patterns or a color one with the glasses? Just wondering if someone can give me a general idea on what im shooting for here, since ive never messed with these settings.

Im waiting on DVE and i'll try to match the patterns there, unless theyre not there then i'll try to use one of the 2 sugested links here

If your software version ends w/ a "T", then you're up to date.

To check this:

From your remote
- Press Home
- Scroll Over to Settings
- Scroll Up to Product Support
- Enter Contact Sony
- See Product Version at the Bottom.

If your firmware doesn't end in a T, you can get the firmware update from Sony directly (Contact Tech Support). The update is sometimes called the "CNET Update" or the "Pink Issue" update. Sony will send you the update on a USB drive (Very easy to install).
