Official Sony KDS-XXA3000 OWNERS THREAD! - Page 223

scJohn - it's hard to surmise that something is wrong with the TV because as you said, you replaced the fan unit but still to no avail. That leads me to believe that you have some extraordinary hearing! Not sure if you tried yet, but is the set within a cabinet enclosure of some sort? Allowing lots of space behind the TV should prevent accumulation of hot air behind the set - but this is assuming fan speed is dependent on the TV's temperature.

Just got my own 60A3000 deliver today - the delivery guy said he believes it's best to let the TV warm up to room temperature before turning it on for the first time since it's been sitting in the freezing delivery truck from Syracuse for almost 5 hours on its route here - the set is so cold after I took it out of the box I can immediately see condensation on the outside of the set evaporating. Although no statistical analysis has ever been done, back when I had the XS955 I had a theory that much of the quality control/assurance issues for RPTVs are the result of cold weather as I noticed a large number of people with TV issues to be located in the east, mideast, and midwest...not the west coast.

The remote sucks - I don't understand why Sony decides to remove and/or add random buttons as they wish as they progress from model to model. For example, where's my lovely PIP button? Oh, wait, that's right - this set doesn't have PIP!

I was told the samething about letting the tv get to room temp before turning it on, mine was delivered about 2hrs ago (give or take).

fortunately the remote I'm not gonna worry about, Logitech Harmony remote I picked up 1.5yrs ago and love it.

No, I did not. I already own a stand big enough from Salamander Designs and love it. The 60A3000 should look fantastic on it!

Creatine, how long are you going to wait? I'm playing it safe and waiting a whopping 5+ hours! Gonna wait until later tonight and see if I can steal any channels in the clear from TWC...as I once did for a couple years back in San Diego! Hee hee hee!

I do, set the PS3 to 1080p and everything will be output at that res..either sent by the PS3 as 1080p or upscaled (in the case of 720p/1080i PS3 games) by the TV itself.

I just chose optimal and my PS3 defaulted to 1080p.

I am looking to fill in an open space (approximately 39" wide) between the left side of my 60A3000 and the end of the wall which then meets a hallway. I do not have space on the right side because I have to allow clearance for opening the front door.

I am looking for some sort of left entertainment tower (preferably black finish) where I could store stuff. Can anyone recommend a place where I might find this? Any help is greatly appreciated.

nice dodge - perhaps someone else can tell me why a 60A2020 would be $350 more than a 60A3000.

(by the way, my main viewing t.v. is a Pioneer PDP 5060 - the 60" rear projection would be for the bedroom). Thanks, Bill

How's the "silk-screen" effect?
Thanks and congrats to all w/this set!
Happy New Year.

I thought about waiting awhile but only 3hrs, our house was pretty warm and I took it out of the box as soon as it was delivered.

my 1st impressions without making any adjustments is to hard to put into words.

I put in Transformers HD-DVD (360 add-on) and I can't believe how much better the picture is!!!!

holy crap, this is a beautiful TV

The general trend of TVs the past few years has been that the new model will be cheaper, so I don't find it at all odd that an old model might be seen at a higher price. The A2020 is really an older design and like with many other products it not uncommon to find the old model listed at higher prices. Unless one is clearly cheaper for the size you want, I'd consider it irrelevant. For a bedroom there are probably only a few aspects I would consider:

1) The A3000 is going to have less cabinet depth to take up less space, for example the A2020 would have to hang off the back of the stand I use.

2) The A2020 might be preferable if you'll be watching from poor angles. That model seemed to have less-perceptable changes with different viewing positions. Off-angle viewing is not a strong point of either TV, but with that aspect the A2020 is probably better.

3) I watch in low-light and my A2000 was very difficult to keep green in check. I know that there were some early reports of the A2020 being better in that respect, but from what I've read there weren't any design changes to explain such reports. Certainly the A3000 still has a lot of variation across the screen, but my A3000 has green held in far better check and there have been very few green reports. Of course I've read that if there's a lot of light in your room then red might be the more noticable color if it's high.

silk screen is there, but not too bad. if you turn down the brightness it helps, and sitting farther back. I sit about 10ft from the 50" and don't notice it at all really. only sometimes on really bright scenes. moving your head seems to make it stand out more, also.. but it's not a deal breaker IMO.

it does not have the deep black levels of my old 46" RPTV (3-CRT), but it is bigger, much brighter, colors are better, and it's much much sharper. Plus I can feed it anything from 480i to 720p to 1080p and it all looks great - the old CRT didn't like 720p and SD sources looked like crap (even DVD)

Hey, everybody - I was wondering if anybody here found any luck with finding manufacturer codes for the remote (YD016) asides from Sony's own listed 5.1 receiver (pathethic!). I have a Yamaha receiver and was hoping that I can bypass its remote without squandering money on a universal remote. Did a search and looks like somebody else posted the same question and it's still unanswered (although he asked for an Onkyo code).

Damn...I hate Time Warner Cable. My SA 8300HD box started to make excessive fan noise so I went in and decided to just swap for a SA 4250HDC since I don't use the DVR portion that much. The only reason I really had the 8300 was for HDMI. Well, Time Warner has changed software now from Passport to Mystro and, guess what, they must hate HDMI because they restricted a key option that makes picture quality worse than component. Under Mystro, if you hook up via HDMI, you now lose the option of simply choosing 1080i input (or 720p). You get only one setting, Auto, and, as those of us that have tried it out results in poorer picture quality and increased times changing channels as you have to wait for the box to change output resolution (480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i). When I hook it up via Component the quality is back and you can simply select 1080i like the old box. I called technical support and they said the new software doesn't allow choosing individual outputs for HDMI anymore because of handshake issues. Supposedly, all cable companies are eventually going to be required to go this route. I asked if I would get the feature back with another 8300 and they said no...due to the new software being installed. Supposedly, I would've eventually lost the feature on the old box, even if I'd kept it, or asked for another box with the Passport software. Anyone know any workarounds? Does anyone have Time Warner with a 8300 and Mystro and can select only 1080i? If you can I'll take the 4250 back.

I have an 8300, but how do I tell if is Passport or Mystro?

EDIT: Nevermind, I apparently have Sara or something like that. Any way to upgrade to passport? That looks better...

You get 30 days to return, no restocking fee AND 60 days price protection for HDTVs, that would cover any price drops for the next two months.

Also, there are numerous ways to apply discounts to the purchase, if you buy at circuitcity.com. The 10% AAA discount coupon is still available. A 10% merchandise card rebate is offered through entertainment.com. There are also cash back offers through the ************** and Jellyfish.com websites.

Go for it!

How do you apply a AAA discount at circuitcity.com?

Has anyone ordered and received a TV from Abe's? I live in Colorado so I would have to order from their Web site and wait for delivery. Are they a trusted vendor?

I've noticed a high contrast seems to contribute a bit to SSE. Since using Auto 2 and a lower contrast, I've seen a slight improvement here.

I too came from a CRT RPTV and was a big fan of them. I had a very well calibrated and ISF'd KP-57WS520 which was coincidently Sony's last CRT RPTV as is my A3000. The absolute blacks were better and the SSE was much less noticable, but I still find the blacks on the SXRD good and the SSE isn't a huge deal to me. Some shadow detail or brighter scenes actually exhibit better blacks than before. I find the colors on the SXRD a bit more natural and it far exceeds in focus and resolution.

In addition, the SXRD provides a cleaner image than my previous CRT RPTV. There is less video noise in the image - I suspect it's largely because everything in my chain is now pure digital and there are no D/A conversions like before. I too find DVDs looking better now, as well. A good upscaling player can now be appreciated.

Does anyone know if you order online from vans if you can pick your delivery date? I don't want my tv sitting out in single digit temps all day while I'm at work. Thanks in advance.

The software that the 8300 runs is determined by the cable company. Basically if the cable system was built for SARA, it will not run Passport (and vise versa). That's in the process of changing with the introduction of OCAP (Mystro or Navigator is OCAP). Unfortunately, there are lots of problems with Mystro/Navigator and from a stability standpoint SARA is superior to the other software. However Passport has a better user interface, as does Navigator.

Happy New Year.

It's definitely noticable. I have gotten used to it however and it really doesn't bother me anymore (I'm at 9' with the 60"). I still need to really calibrate this thing with a disc and I was hoping the Blu-ray version of DVE or AVIA would be out by now. Heck, I think I'll just get the X360 add-on and the HD-DVD

They call you to schedule. That being said, I just had a really bad experience with Vann's.

Ordered my TV on the 19th (the 55A3000, which they no longer stock according to the website). Estimated delivery date was Friday, Dec. 28th. I tracked the package diligently. It arrived to my local distribution center on Thursday, Dec. 27th sometime really early in the morning (before dawn). No call to schedule delivery. Finally I get a call on Friday to schedule delivery for the 31st. Strike one.

I get up Monday morning and wait for my TV to arrive. I get a call saying their local office is closed and they won't be doing shipping that day. Instead, they reschedule it for today. Strike two.

Today, I leave work over an hour early to get here for the post 4 PM delivery time. The Yellow truck pulls up in front of my house at 4:30. Timely. Good. Wonderful. Where's my TV? I go down to meet the guy (because anything except curbside service costs you). The package is a wreck. One top corner of the box is completely missing, the styrofoam broken, and the cardboard ripped to shreds. We carry it up to the house just to see if the unit is in good shape. Nope. The top part of the screen housing was dented and bent. Refused shipment.

Now, I realize that shipping damage isn't Vann's fault, but when I have to wait over an hour to talk to someone between 15 minutes of busy signals and 45 minutes of holding, that was the final straw. I canceled my order and immediately placed an order for the same TV with Crutchfield, which is one of the last places that carries it.

You can try opening the portals on the side and dusting the screen. This thread has a few posts with more detailed advice (what material to use etc). If the spots are black it's pretty much got to be dust. The chance of all three panels failing in the same spot to produce a black 'dead pixel' is pretty much nil.
I haven't seen any dead pixels on my TV. I agree, it is probably dust. I have a few tiny dust spots, but they aren't noticeable from a proper viewing distance.

If you are a member, begin by going to www.aaa.com/circuitcity. Type in your zip code to access your regional site. Follow the instructions to request the coupon. Delivery is by email in less than an hour.

Note: The coupon page shows 8% off, but the discount is 10% through 1/4/08.

Good luck!

I'm sorry to hear about your luck, I had the exact opposite experience with vanns, got the TV when they said they would and I called vanns one time, got right thru, called yellow truck multiple times and they were pleasant and polite.

hopefully TV #2 will show up good for you.

good luck

They will not leave your TV without you signing for it. I spoke with the delivery company this morning and found out that they could not deliver my TV today, as I was expecting, because I had not called to set up a delivery appointment; we set up an appointment for tomorrow. I am not sure how much latitude they will allow, but I think that they will hold your TV for at least a few days until they can set up an appointment that is convenient for you.
