Where to Switch HDMI?

Right now, I have HDMI coming from an Explorer 8300 STB and from a Toshiba HD-A1 HD-DVD player. These connect to a Radiient 4x1 HDMI switch, which feeds my Panny 509U... 50' away as the cable runs, not as the crow flies. For audio, I have an older Pioneer amp (no HDMI and only 2 digital audio inputs). I want to ugrade:

A. The Receiver to get additional inputs and to add dual-room dual source for music listening in another room while something else is happening in main room, and

B. An HTPC (with HDMI) to handle other digital content.

The big question for me is whether to handle the HDMI switching within the receiver, or continue to use the switch. The Radiient switch is a nice piece of equipment that I know will drive the distance. But the higher end receivers are going to have the switching whether I want it or not.. big factor is where to do the scaling, right? Keep it at the source, or handle it in the receiver?

TIA for any input...

As you imply, if you want the receiver to do the scaling, you probably want to run your sources through it. Your panasonic, is it a plasma? I think it's own scaler and deinterlacer is pretty good. You may not be able to improve that with a receiver.

Many receivers only have 2 HDMI inputs, so you will need to shop around to find one with four inputs, or keep your switch.

I personally switch both component and HDMI video through my Yamaha RX-V2700. I do see some lip sych glitches from time to time, and on a few hot nights, I lost HDMI video from my Yamaha DVD changer. Generally though, it works well.

Thanks for the response, Michael.

Yes, the Panny is plasma... I guess it is time to plow through receiver spec's to find something I like. I probably won't place too much importance on the receiver doing switching/scaling, but will focus on other characteristics.

Thanks again...
