Official Bioshock for PC thread - Page 2

...and from out of nowhere: BioShock is available for pre-purchase on Steam!

The minor advantages of buying it from Steam: 1) no disk needed in the drive to play, 2) no validation code needed and 3) it can be re-installed on different computers under the same account.

If this works like other Steam pre-orders, it will immediately download the game to your computer, and once the street date hits, it will install and be available to play.

...they need to get a PC demo out this weekend!

Looks like you can download the PC version direct to drive via STEAM
Preloading is already happening

I do not like buying games from Steam that are available elsewhere. My brother had a steam account that he didn't use for about a year. He wanted to start playing again, but couldn't remember his login information, and his email had since changed so he couldn't get it send to him. Steam gave him absolutely zero help in retrieving his information. They would not answer emails on the subject. They would not answer the phone and never returned any calls in response to the numerous messages he left. Since he couldn't login, he could not re-download the games he had already paid for through Steam. Two thumbs WAY down for customer service.

I ain't buying it until I can play the demo.

I think the demo comes out the 18th?

Probably not. A story on Blues News said it was delayed, and now will be out "later in the month" (whatever that means).

I really like Steam myself. Much better than shuffling CD/DVD's and fishing for 'no cd' hacks. I can also install games on multiple PC's.

IGN has a review of the PC version up.

A couple excerpts of interest to this thread:

"If you're debating which version to get, the PC version handles better. In part it's because of the greater precision with the mouse and keyboard, but also with how the plasmids and weapons are selected. With the default settings RMB switches between the two, LMB fires, and you use the mouse wheel instead of a radial menu to select a specific plasmid or weapon. This keeps you rooted in the action to a greater degree than in the Xbox 360 version, since you don't have to keep pausing the game."

"The PC version definitely outclasses the Xbox 360, mostly because of the ability to crank the resolution to 1920 x 1200. If you've got a Vista rig with a DX10 card, you can expect some heightened particle effects, crisper real-time shadows, and more dynamic water, but the game looks gorgeous regardless. On our gaming PC running a Core 2 Quad processor with a GeForce 8800 GTX, and 4 GB of RAM, it ran very well, with only a few occasions of seemingly random framerate hitches."

Finally a game my $1200 Dell E6600 and 8800 GTS 640MB can play.

Of course the PC version will handle better and needs a patch.

So this review shows that the PC DX10 version is better than 360s. PC still for me. The Elite purchase will keep waiting.

They get you for shipping too, you can't pick it up "in-store" because it's not out. I'd like to try the demo before I commit $45 for it. Lots of games coming out in the next 3mos too.

Yea, it sucks that there's no early PC demo.

But you will be able to do in-store pickup on the 21st, so if your state sales tax isn't as bad as mine, that's probably as good of a deal as you will get in the next couple months. And then the retail price will eventually drop.

I'm still on the fence about getting it from Steam....

The PC demo should be out before the end of the month and I'll make my decision then. I'd hate to buy the game and find it ends up running like a dog on my setup (doubtful, but you never know).
PC demo is available now, if you reserved the demo via fileplanet. DL'ing now. But it's sloooooooow.

Thanks. I'm a member (freebie with the Comcast high speed package), Wouldn't open up in Opera but got it going in IE7. Stupid D/L manager. Hate that crap. Only 3hrs left.
Huh. Just finished downloading, but the DL manager says "Waiting for key to unlock"... and all mention of the demo is gone from the FP page...

Edit: If I go to my File planet Beta Keys archive, the key for the demo is there... but I can't start the demo...

Thanks for the tip, I didn't know all that stuff was free with my Comcast high speed package. I just registered now, cool.
I can't get the key at all. It says it doesn't exist. It won't go to the page to unlock, says "Next Time to Unlock 1Hr"...
According to Bluesnews it gets released wide at 7pm anyways, preload early apparently was a mistake.
They accidentally released an unlocked version earlier, before realizing their mistake. It's all over the torrents network now.
See, this is why I dont bother with PC Demos at this point......all this nonsense you have to go through with timed betas, registering to get access to demos....all this B.S. just turns me off.

Its a DEMO....spam it out all over the net.....let people try it.

Agreed.
Yeah, I'll just wait for it to be unlocked tonight as I already have it preloaded. I don't want to use torrents as I always hear stories of Comcast bitching about people using it. I can see why, because the bandwidth flows both ways...
OK, I played through the demo and it's fun enough. Now I just have to decide what with all the games and movies coming out in the next few months if it's in my budget.

Thanks for the heads up.

ATI also released a hotfix on their website for their latest drivers.
I was playing BioShock demo yesterday on my friends 360 and it looked great.

Then I played it on my PC today, and it looks AWESOME! Graphics seem sharper (I set it on 1280x800). It's so much more immersive because you sit closer to the screen and the sounds are so sweet. I prefer the mouse and keyboard over the controller anyways.

If I had to pick one version, I would definitely take the PC.

I'm gonna go preload on steam now...

I just played through the PC demo twice... it's no question it's the version to get, if you can choose between both.

nVidia users: the recommended driver for the BioShock PC demo is beta v163.44

Here's a link to the 32bit XP driver page. There's separate links on that page to the 64bit and Vista drivers too.
Circuit City still doesn't list it as being "in stock" for some reason.

Not 'till tomorrow (Tuesday).

Wow... I just played through the PC demo twice. A couple thoughts:

1) at 1920x1200 (that's beyond 1080p!) with v-sync on, FRAPS reports a locked 30fps with occasional 60fps. With Vista's DirectX10 it looks great... this is the first very positive Vista-enhanced experience I've had, so maybe DX10 can deliver the goods?

2) Sound in 5.1 on a X-Fi card is amazing!

3) I might be in the minority here, but first time through the PC demo I played with mouse/keyboard, and it was fine. Second time through I tried a wired 360 controller... the controller is the way to play this game. The reason might be because this game was designed for a controller, or maybe I've just gotten used to dual sticks...? Either way, it felt a lot more natural with the 360 controller. And the rumble is cool!

I played the 360 demo last week --personally, I think I'm going to rent the 360 version, at least for the first time through the game. However, re-playability is very high with this game. So when the PC version drops in price, I know I'll pick up that version and play through it again with much better graphics.

For those with high-end PCs, grab this demo and let that rig shine!
