This is for two reasons:
1) The Non-Ringing scaling on Lumagen solutions are noticeably better than the Precision Video Scaling that is used by DVDO/Anchor Bay.
2) The noise-reduction on the Lumagen XS/XD/XE is at least a generation ahead of what is available from DVDO/Anchor Bay
Non-Ringing scaling = Noise Reduction on scaling
Noise Reduction IS EVIL. Sure, the pro has a few bugs on scaling and there are cleanest pictures out there. But a HEAVY NR treatment will give you, at best, a decent SD upscaled picture (ie: you can ALWAYS say that's an SD scaled picture and never be fooled that is hd).
SO far i've found the vp50/pro has the best and more razor-sharp image out there, with the better blacks and dynamics. I would not say to my best friend to buy one, because the company really sucks (lacks of support, lacks of respect for the customer, buggy software, too expensive prices) but Lumagen (as well as Crystalio) can not hold a candle against a DIRECT match with the vp50/pro. Sure, clenaest etc. but try a blind test and ask competent people what is the best overall image ...
